Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That reminds me. I was looking through old SDN threads the other day to find out more about how AMCAS got started. Apparently there was an AMCAS disaster in 2001 when they first tried to go all electronic. Glad I wasn't part of that. I was still a little baby in high school.

LizzyM said, adcoms immediately saw all the schools you applied to

I wonder if they quickly saved all the info, so they would know later in the cycle where each applicant was applying. That'd be so shady. I hope there's no AMCAS of 2010 disaster like that. Hopefully 9 years has taught them a little bit about electronic applications.

EDIT: *10 years.

I have nothing against the school (I'm sure you love it there. Back when I was scared to post in 2013, I still checked it to see if you got in. Congrats btw. I never told you that.), but it seems that it would be very difficult to get into Howard if you are not African-American. Maybe I'm wrong but that's the impression I've gotten by reading about it in my MSAR. It's known for being the "oldest and largest historically black medical school." RecyclingBinh's not black, so I figure it'd be harder for him to get in.

Thank you sweetie. I love it here. The truth is, it doesn't matter what ethnicity you are, it is about your commitment to serving and making a difference and change in the underserved community. We have a very diverse class. Yes it is the oldest and largest Historically Black medical school, but we accept people of all backgrounds. They are just able to see thru most people because they apply to Howard with the idea that they will get in because Howard accepts lower scores. If you have the want and drive and desire to change how healthcare is administered to the underserved, then Howard is the perfect place for you!

Congrats on submitting your app! Good luck with this cycle. I pray that the Lord will bless you with the desires of your heart! Now back to cell biology/histology, God bless.

does amcas show you your gpa breakdowns after they verify?

🙂 Thanks! How's the pre-matriculation stuff going??

Yes

It is good. Medical school aint no punk! Make sure you relax as much as possible before you matriculate, because when you get there, it doesn't stop at all. I love it though. We just had our biochem exam and I passed it so that made me happy. Right now we are on cell bio/histo. It's crazy how easily time can get away from you.

howard i would take off, nevada doesnt take many OOS people same goes for kentucky (unless u have ties to kentucky). loma linda unless you are a fanatical christian or SDA then take it off. Id also take off michigan state and replace it with something else just based on tuition alone. They are I believe the most expensive OOS school. Maybe replace moorhouse too but thats up to you.

thanks for telling me after i submitted my application. you don't have to have ties to Nevada or Kentucky to get accepted. it doesn't say that on their profile at all.

Loma Linda? Really? Have you looked at their secondaries or their philosophies? You should really check those out before you throw away your money on a Loma Linda app.

I read the MSAR about Loma Linda and it caught my attention that they value christian principles. I am catholic and have been serving my church for 10+ years as an active member. I am a pretty devout christian. hope that will score me points with them.

Tomorrow is the day! I can feel it.

Meanwhile, I think I'm gonna watch The Godfather.

I hate to tell you this, but I looked into it. Here's a quote from their admissions website.
A high priority is given to residents of Nevada. A small number of nonresident applicants are considered each year who have strong residential ties to Nevada (that is, parents' residence, medical catchment area) or are residents of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming (western rural states without medical schools). Individuals who do not meet these residential requirements should not apply.
Also, I'd suggest reading Loma Linda's website, they're not Catholic, but I'm not sure if they are Catholic-friendly.

if you say so. however, Nevada and Kentucky secondaries are screened so if i don't get a secondary, it's ok...i wouldn't lose much.

here is what Loma Linda's website said
"The School of Medicine is owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church; therefore, preference for admission is given to members of the Church. However, it is a firm policy of the admissions committee to admit each year a number of non-church-related applicants who have demonstrated a commitment to Christian principles and are best suited for meeting the educational goals of the School. No candidate is accepted on the basis of religious affiliation alone."

They say that but when you get their ridiculous 2ndary you will understand better. That being said you seem very releigous and all that so maybe apply then. Its not that they refuse to take anyone none SDA as just they are unbelievably relegious. I mean its basically shoving it down your throat. You being involved in christian relegion already should be fine there. I think brysons and others point was that if you are not heavily SDA or chrisitian that school is not for you. If you are more power too u.

Also NV states they basically give non-residents no chance who are not from the areas that bryson lists, its right out of admissions and what they post in the msar and their website. Kentucky is somewhat similar though not as bad. I wasnt saying they never in their 50 year histories have ever accepted a OOS resident. I was just saying they HEAVILY favor in state and therefore as an out of state resident there might be better choices. If you want to go there anyways its your money so who i am to say you cant go. Was just trying to give helpful advice. Typically to get accepted to a school like kentucky you would have ties to the state as an OOS resident, or have good stats above their average making you "competitive", which in your case your GPA will not put you in taht category. But like i said no need to get offended apply if you want by all means.

Wow i guess i missed the C/O 2014 thread memo... 211 pages? Seriously?

Ok, Creighton is a catholic school... And I'm applying there, but Loma Linda is extreme, man. I definitely understand if they share you're values, but I would hate to see you shell out the money and time for a school you might think is pretty extreme. If you like their philosophy then I say more power to you and best of luck, but if you're just religous and think that it's simply a religous school I think you might be in for a surprise.

How does a signed vow of abstinance from alcohol and pre-marital sex sound to you? If you don't mind then by all means apply. Not that med school is all about booze and sex, but as soon as someone tries to force your hand into relenquishing them is when I have an issue.

I just wanted you to be aware that it is not a casually religous school. You might also want to check out their match statistics.

Good luck either way though.

oh really? maybe i should add creighton as well? any other schools i should add? i was thinking of Tufts, UoToledo, and Meharry?

i wouldn't mind signing a vow to abstain from alcohol and premarital sex. 😀

for secondaries we have to wait for med schools to send us a link or something before we can submit it right?

b/c the med schools here in TX, we can submit it before we submit our primary.

Creighton does not require this nor do any of the other 3 jesuit schools. Loma linda is the only insane fanatically relegious school.

and wtf, david carradine (kill bill guy) just hanged himself 🙁

No you don't need to sign one with Creighton. Creighton is medically focused and religion is available to those who seek it, but it is not mandated.

Creighton is a great school, man. Whether you hold strong religious views or not, you can't go wrong with a school like Creighton.

Seriously on the vows part? Either you're married or you aren't getting any otherwise you would never say such a thing! 🙂

Exactly! Loma Linda is craziness.

Nice job, man! Plus, you have to love calculations in your favor.

Seriously? That's jacked up. I thought he was all into the spiritual side of things...

I wonder if it was part of an asphyxiation kink or a genuine suicide.

Plus, why in the hell would you hang yourself? That has to be such a horrible way to go. I have read articles on execution and the gallows, and apparently it can take up to 15 minutes to die while you're hanging there if the fall isn't far enough to break your neck on the initial drop...

im pretty sure he hanged himself. but the article i linked to makes no specific mention. dude was one of my favorite actors, and i'm not really a big fan of movies 🙁

what other 3 jesuit schools?

i went to a jesuit high school. will this score me some points? 😀

you took my top. now i will never know what getting top feels like. 😡

Life is not fair. The sooner you accept that aphorism, the sooner you can get on with your life and be the best you can be without blaming your failures on someone else.

*gasp* There are still people in the world who aren't married and don't plan to have sex before they are??????? What is the world coming to? Obviously, there is something horribly messed up in all of their minds, the guys, especially. Heaven forbid they ever make sure a decision. I mean sure most religions frown upon premarital sex, but that's not a logical reason to not sleep with every person you can. Not to mention personal reasons outside of religion. Those don't count either. Shame, shame, RecyclingBinh. 0C obviously has life all figured out. The answer to life is getting some. Duh.

Probably on your secondaries and interviews. 😉

I like the Jesuit teaching philosophy, but I could do without all the religion in medicine. I also attended a Jesuit high school for a bit and it was a great school.

I'm going to open a car dealership in your neck of the woods, because I know if I tell you that you were meant for the car you would buy it without even test driving it.

Ok, but really the difference is a choice not a mandate. I think it's ridiculous that a school would mandate these things of their students. What if you feel the time is right and the stars and moon are in harmony, so you and your new "beaux" are ready for the next step then... BAM! The realization that you've signed that decision away to get a medical education hits you. I don't want to sound like a jerk, and I know it's very apparent that I am a proponent of pre-marital sex, but for a MEDICAL SCHOOL to demand that of their students is a bit rediculous. Not to mention draconian laws typically yeild the exact opposite of their desired affect.

There is a difference between absinace by choice and good decision making and a school mandate for abstinance.
