Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so since you guys are here right now, quick question...what does it take to get into any med school you want? This is what ive come up with

- 4.0 gpa at a strong undergrad
- Solid MCAT scores
- Volunteer experience at a hospital
- EMS/EMT/CPR Certifications that are relevant (having them for a long time as well)
- Research experience?
 
what college do you go to, Mr. class of 2014. you are so young. i'm jealous. I want to be in your shoes right now.

Go back to high school? No, thanks. I want to keep moving on with my life.

But yeah, high school days were the good days.

I'm debating between Premed and Pharm right now, but for pre med schools ive kind of made this list (in order of interest)

- Cornell University
- College of the Holy Cross (I've heard great things about this school)
- Boston College
- Johns Hopkins/ Tufts

My favorite schools would have been WashU or Brown, but whether or not i apply to those two will depend on how much i can boost my sat in november

You also need to look dead sexy. Very important.

you do not need a 4.0 or EMS/EMT/CPR certification, nor do you need to go to a "strong undergrad." you do need good grades, research, clinical experience, volunteering, and some other stuff thrown in to make you seem interesting and well-rounded. browse around in the pre-allo forum to get a better sense of this stuff.

don't go to a school because it's "good for pre-med." what does that even mean, anyway? go to a school where you'll get a good education, and you'll complete the pre-med stuff along the way. take it from me-- i was not sure i was pre-med when i started college but i still managed to end up in what i think (/hope?) is a VERY strong position for application season.

that goes without saying. oh, and you also need to RELAX and take things one step at a time. don't waste college thinking about med school.
 
I'm not thinking about med school i was just wondering what are important because I really don't know. And the D90 is my favorite camera of all time right now, nikon is ftw. I have a Canon XSi which is ok..it's great to start with and get into dslr, but can't really do some of the more technical aspects.

and a "good for premed" school, ill just take holy cross for instance - they really care for their undergrads (something like 60% of their alum are physicians) and they have good advising systems/help you get involved with relevant extracurriculars and have a high acceptance into med school rate (ie above the national average by so and so). None of it is absolutely neccessary because you can do premed courses anywhere, but hey it helps.

you're the second person i've recently heard say that canons are good! i may have to reconsider my plans for a nikon... my film SLR is a canon and i do love it. hm.

A. I'm real jealous, I didn't even consider premed until I was a 4th year. Others did it even later...
B. 4.0 is waayyyy easier said than done. Especially depending on your major. Choose a major you like and get above a 3.6 and you'll be fine.

EMS/EMT/CPR certs are worthless unless you actually volunteer using them. I'm a volunteer EMT and I do a shift every week. It's a great way to get patient care experience if you can stomach the deformed injuries, blood on the road at an accident, dirty adult diapers, and vomit.

Research experience is good too, try to stick with one lab if you can. Then, you'll be able to make your way into your own project and get it published.

Yes. Where'd you get those numbers? That actually sounds way off considering only 155 out of ~3,000 grads from my school went to med school in 2006.
 
or better yet, 100% overlap 😀

Yeah, options for NYS students tend to be similar😉

So for all of you Tulane applyers (except ksmi, she can attest to this) - it was about 95ish in BR and NOLA today.

I left my house at 9:30:00 this morning and was sweating as I opened my car door at 9:30:05.
Just warning you people - it sucks, this is why I would like to move a bit north. And it's not even end of July/early August yet. That's when it really starts to kick. We had a heat wave 2 years ago where it was consistently 120 (that's heat index) for 2 weeks.

Dude, that's so annoying! I don't understand why they call so early and show up at the end of their scheduled window. When I moved into my place about 6 mos ago the cable guy called at 7 to say he would be there at 8, then didn't show up until noon!!! I was pissed.

I do remember though how gratifying it felt when my old roommates dog inadvertently peed on the cable guy as he was lying down on the floor trying to fix the connection to the TV. I could help but laugh, I did feel awful and since I was his first job of the day he was going to have to go around in his urine soaked jeans all day, so I offered to spray him with some windex to get the smell out... Ha ha. My old roommate still brings it up every time I see him... "Remember when you sprayed the cable guy down with windex..." Good times... ha ha

This makes no sense to me, unless this school only Bachelors of Science degrees in Biology and Chemistry. Even then the number looks preposterously skewed. I would go back to your source and slap him/her, because s/he lied to you.
