But going to class is so inefficient! I could seriously sleep 50% of the time I'm in class study the other 50% and accompolish more.

That sucks about the migraine. I get ocular migraines once in a while when I'm extremely stressed and work out too hard at the gym, but for me it's a migraine without the headache. Still weird though.

oooh, that is weird. i get regular old migraines. luckily mine are mostly at night, so i don't usually miss work or school or anything. but i've been keeping a headache journal for 6 months, and my doctor and i still can't figure out what my triggers are. le sigh.
 
dont migraines come with the menstrual cycle?

yea idk, i dont get headaches (or hangovers!) either

I didn't realize the French had a "sigh," but i guess you learn something new everyday.

Yeah, that does suck that you get the accompanying headache. Migraines are nasty business. I lose peripheral vision and see flashing colored triangular grids. It's like a light show is going off. It just makes it difficult to concentrate or focus, but usually passes in about an hour or two. I thought I was having a stroke the first time I got one, so I did all the tests in front of my bathroom mirror. ha ha.

Alright, finally have my (I think) second to last secondary! Of course, it might even be my last - I'm thinking about not doing OHSU's.
 
Is anyone else ever afraid of typing "undeserved community" instead of "underserved community" and not having Word catch it for you?
 
I just had the stunning realization that the first secondaries came out two months ago! 😱

So I did a mock interview today (which went well). At one point the interviewer asked "so what are you afraid of being asked?" So I said, "well, last year Mayo was asking people to compare and contrast government regulation of trans fats vs. cigarette use."

His response? "Oh where did you hear that...that Doctor Students Network place?" (in a VERY angry tone)

So I says "well actually I found this information in a couple of places, one of which is from a current student of the school."

Things went well after that.

Anyone else experienced the Admissions office/Career center hate of SDN?

I wouldn't be surprised if career centers hate SDN. SDN makes people neurotic. Neuroticism leads to more business for the career center (but they don't make money by how many students they see), so less money for a certain amount of work. SDN also makes students panic about early submission, leading them to badger career centers to write their committee letters faster.

Random pre-med: "You're wrong! I just finished reading on SDN that I really need to..."

Mock interviewer never even mentioned SDN for me. Maybe a good thing.

I watched it a couple of years ago, but it's always good for a nice laugh. I was going to make it appear that dw showed me something new so that she could feel a sense of accomplishment for the day... Way to ruin it for her man... :meanie:😛

Penn State
Drexel
Loyola

Or some other school not listed.

I've already applied to the University of Colorado (state school), Creighton, Jefferson, and Rosalind Franklin.

I can afford to add one more, but I'm not sure what to add. Any thoughts?

From what I've seen, they're pretty OOS friendly, and they probably receive a lot less than 10,000 apps like Drexel. I didn't apply there b/c I don't have all the prerecs.

Well drexel does favor non-trad students somewhat but the 13k+ apps they recieve make it somewhat hard for me to swallow applying there.

penn state does have low average stats, they get less applicants, i think its a good choice.

loyola - Of the 3 schools this would probably be my favorite, but they also receive about 10k apps...this is a jesuit school though. The 4 jesuits are known to accept lower stats if theres an application they really like or have great ECs committed to service.

Also another thing to think about, is drexel has no essays to write and penn state might as well have none as their questions are limited to 50 words and you cant really get a lot across. Loyola on the other hand has like 9 essays and is beastly, but ive always felt that schools that require long essays are good for people like us who have only average mcats, as it gives us a chance to shine in other ways that others may not. Personally Id add drexel/penn state if it was me...also loyola does pre screen, im not sure if ure mcat might be too low for them (dont think so but :shrug: )

UP = case? sorry, im kinda dumb with the technicalities but i think i got interviews at both

yes and no. i'm too back and forth to really have an opinion on staying vs. leaving, so i'm hoping my acceptances make the decision for me.

Nice, man. Thanks for the info. I'm tempted to try to stretch my dollar and apply to both Loyola and Penn State, but I don't know if I can afford that. I'm going to have to look into their secondary costs. My MCAT score is above their cutoff, but verbal is probably close.

penn state is a good place to go. hershey is a nice small fun town not too far from philly.

drexel is nice too, its located on a suburbish part of philly. its a HUGE medical school with many of its students coming from BA/MD programs and linkage post-bacs. Hanhemann used to be a top name in philly, along with temple, before Penn started to dominate the area (i think temple makes good money still from its set of patients, hanhemann has gone back and forth between private insurers i believe)

did that for 5 years... this is my first apartment where i'm paying market price for rent. ever since march-ish i've been thinking that i'm kind of over this city. who knows.

thanks man, honestly i was looking for some east coast love so i didn't have to spend much on interviews. i was just looking for a place to get in by Oct 15 ish (i'd be cool going to DO/Carib) so that I could just switch jobs come december. I've been making scraps at lab, its kinda getting tiring doing more (significant) work than the post-docs and getting paid much less when i could have just gone to J&J or GSK (or even a lower paying NIH IRTA where atleast people would seem like they could talk to me). I just wanna publish my papers and bounce and go make some money/take some time off.

but for the time being, gotta keep working hard i guess

its a good break to go somewhere else for sure. i would love to return to nyc for residency or something like that, when i would have a chance to see a greater range of ppl . but for now, i kinda like the suburbs
