praising 2014?? let you be anathema to us

any of you have a netbook? my laptop died and i'm thinking of getting a netbook to hold me over til i know where i'm going to school and can buy a new one but don't know if it's worth the ~250 bucks.

Don't do it. They are slower than the laptop I bought 4 years ago.

psssssh, you're practically part of this class too. you're gonna get a hug wether you want it or not. 😛

Im gonna take a pic of my 7up cake for Luun. And my molly had babies 😀 but the chiclid ate all but one. 🙁

I dont get why a netbook would be slow? Even my Blackberry phone is usually pretty fast (unless Im in an area of bad/low reception, which is rare for Verizon in my experiences) and it can do almost everything my computer can do. Granted its a bit more tedious because of the size I am dealing with....

i think if you are just waiting to hold off on computers until july/august

then the best options are

1. cheap decent desktop (maybe one that you build yourself)
2. cheapest fast laptop/netbook

i think im gonna rock a netbook for med school since i dont like to carry stuff

haha @ building it myself😛 i can barely use excel, let alone build a whole computer.

i think i'll go check some netbooks out at best buy and see what i think. if i do end up getting one i might just get a desktop during the summer and use the netbook as my carry around computer then have the desktop as the one i use in my apt during med school.

when did the "med school rant" thread that SO NASTY!
I stopped reading after it reached 3 pages when it was screaming of a bunch of petulant children...it is a mud-sling match now!

if you weren't so far away...I'd let you borrow my second one.
I think I heard of renting a laptop. Maybe you can look into something like that?
Do any schools you applied to require everyone to get the same laptop? If not...you might as well get one now.

I wanna be david abernathy.

ya the thing is 2 of the schools i'm waitlisted at (vermont and wake) give you a laptop so it'd be silly to get a good one now then be given one for free. otherwise i'd probably just go ahead and buy one now. that's a good idea to look into renting one though-thanks!

Can you believe the two 7UP cakes I made are already gone? I only had a small sliver of one and it's not like we had the family over for Christmas!

I got a netbook when my video card fried on my old vaio. I liked the portability, but you may find that it's too small for longterm use as a primary computer.

correct me if I am wrong but the cost of the laptop is actually part of your "fees"-thats ok at Duke.

Wow! They really give their students laptops? I guess it's probably factored into tuition, but still, that's pretty cool.

Is a 7UP cake really made with ...the...soda...?

I'm so confused. I have never heard of 7UP cakes.

Yeah, I believe they are part of the fees, and at one place I believe you can actually have it waived if you own a laptop that is up to the correct specs.

You know know LSU-Shreveport assigns Macs as their official laptop? Crazy! Haha

Yup! It uses the soda. The recipe that I use only has 3/4th of a cup. I was researching it and apparently it's a southern thing. There's Cola cake too, but I'd never heard of it until I researched the 7UP cake.

ya i'm sure it's part of tuition. it seems nice though because if something goes wrong they have a tech person who knows exactly how to fix it and they give you a loaner to use while yours is broken. both schools i've been to that do it give you is a tablet which seems pretty awesome since you could write on your notes and stuff.

I've had a Dr. Pepper one before...the carbonation basically makes it rise.
Delicious.

I am so jellllli!

Yup, pretty much!

call me crazy, but i'd rather make my own choices with the computer

Completely understandable, but a Pro for having an assigned computer is that some schools have centralized computer technicians. So, if your laptop is acting wonky, they are more willing to fix it without any extra fees vs. places where you have your own laptop.

Also, I think at Wake, they even assign loaner laptops which are loaded with the same programs as your own laptop, so you won't even miss yours!

Second Pro is that not all people know how to choose a great laptop, and schools tend to chose a computer with the best specs for the programs you will be using.

Makes sense then!

I bet the majority of us up here in upstate NY have not heard of them either.

Sounds interesting!

Hmmm... I've never heard of a 7UP cake before. Sounds pretty good though.

I guess I should have used the term "pop" since I am from NY. 😛

Although, 'soda' is just as prevalent.

That sounds pretty neat. The computer people at my school have never been too helpful, so it would be nice to have a technician specialized in the computer systems assigned to students.

i thought pop is a midwest thing.

I am right under Lake Ontario so I am basically on the borderline...which is why both sound right to me I guess.

The processor is made to be small and consume very little power = it's really slow. Like, about the same as processors that were in desktops 6 or 7 years ago. They also only have 1 gig of RAM, which is about enough to run windows and one other program at the same time. I was using one the other day and got frustrated within the first 30 seconds.

i don't like having multiple computers, so i'm prolly gonna try to use a desktop replacement laptop. that way i don't have to have a mobile one and a stationary one. if i get multiple comps i'll prolly use one of them as an entertainment hub or something

when did the "med school rant" thread that SO NASTY!

threads like that always degenerate. i sometimes can't resist the urge to post on them, but i lose interest once they start going downhill. the dude simply didn't understand what those top schools want, they don't give a crap about gpa/mcat as long as they're passable.

How about this... if someone reminds me, I'll try to make a 7UP cake for the summer meet up. Haha

Uh oh, don't start the pop/soda/coke debate again! HAHA

Nice find Zona! I'm kinda surprised to see a few counties in Georgia with "soda" listed.

lol, didn't we JUST have this soda debate like 2 weeks ago? Seems pretty recent.

And I'm also pretty intrigued by this 7up cake business.

:hello: from Orlando!

Apparently this hotel I'm staying at now has free internet. It's really nice, but it's far away from stuff and it's a golf resort (I don't like golf). Gonna go out for drinks tonight at Downtown Disney.

Are you staying at a Disney hotel?

Just wondering, went to a LDS church today for class project and met some possible future classmates lol

Hey man, I was just reading through this thread, and saw your post here. I am from Utah and was interviewing at OSU that weekend, and I think I sat by you at church. Small world.
