Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
here are the lines for the WC games this weekend

CIN favored by 3.0 over the NYJ
NWE favored by 3.5 over the BAL
DAL favored by 4.0 over the PHL
ARI favored by 3.0 over the GBP

which game + line to put money on. im thinking the green bay game will be popular but arizona def didnt play seriously last week

hmm i actually think all the underdogs have a really good shot at winning. cincy looked awfulll on sun and i know they didn't play all their starters but still, the jets really looked like they're gonna win again this week. i'd probably bet on that one.

hmm. true, you could win the line even if the ravens lose by a FG

I'd be tempted to pick the Cardinals over the Packers too.

The Cards were my preaseason pick to go to the Super Bowl, but I have this sinking feeling that they might lay an egg this week and make me look stupid.

The safest bet is still against the Sanchize. His poise may be too much even for him.

About MD/PhD, for me it's because I am more interested in research than clinical work. MD just gives additional security and more opportunities for translational research.

Cincy over the Jets. That line could be 13 and I'd still think about it. The Jets are just not good.

Next, Philly over Dallas. Because it's been a while since Romo had a brain fart, and again you can still win the line even if Dallas wins by a field goal or less.

I don't feel like I have any idea on the relative strength of the Packers and Cards right now, nor do I know how good the Pats are without Welker.

so now i have the 6yo boy i nanny asleep on me...i must look like a pillow to them😛 i think i've spent over 2 hours of the day now lying on this couch with a sleeping kid on me haha

i'm sticking with the research because i wouldn't be happy if i wasn't figuring things out (read: trying to figure things out) all the time.

i feel the exact same way. I could never be the kind of doctor who only applies discoveries made by other people, i feel a need to discover myself. some of the best feelings of self-satisfaction i've had in my life have been those few discoveries I have made, and I want to keep that up. i just feel as though I can do that without writing a dissertation.

i can totally understand that perspective. if I was drawn initially to a PhD, and then later kinda discovered that I was interested in medicine as a field of research, I think I would have been more serious about the dual degree. since I am coming the other way, with a focus more on treatment while keeping an eye on research, I chose to stick MD-only.

Alright, lets see how these picks on the line look Monday morning: Philly, Cincy, Pats, and Cards.

haha i was gonna say the exact opposite-ill go with cowboys, jets, ravens, and packers just for fun🙂

packers ravens bengals eagles

I guess you could choose "things that fly" and root for the cardinals, ravens, jets and eagles

I say lets keep track of everyone's records from here to the Super Bowl and see who wins 🙂 Remember, this is against the line.

i'm still on board spurs.

Since Sammich isn't here to cast her votes, ima go ahead and just pick the Pats in all 4 games for her; I'm sure that's what she'd do.

I guess I'm the only one out there that still likes Brady-Moss. Interesting.

Yeah, no Welker means Moss will see double teams all day.

I'd like the Patriots to beat both the Bengals and Jets if they were playing, but I think the Ravens match up with the Patriots really well.

the question is, if the Pats played themselves in the Superbowl, who would win?

"In a country where abortion is both widespread and, with few exceptions, against the law, Dr. Choi and Dr. Shim are hoping to force South Korea's first serious public discussion of the ethics of the procedure. In November, they and dozens of other obstetricians held a news conference to ask "forgiveness" for having performed illegal abortions."

there's a ridiculous stigma against being single and pregnant in SoKo -> more international adoptions than anywhere else.

I interviewed with a Nobel-winning, MD-only researcher at UT Southwestern during my only MSTP interview last year. Funnily enough, apparently he once had someone who didn't know who he was ask him "How has not having a PhD hindered your ability to do research?" He answered, "I think I've done pretty well."

Lots and lots of MD researchers do a lot of excellent work without a PhD. Whether that will continue to be the case or if the increase in people going the MD/PhD route will make it harder to get funding as an MD-only researcher, I guess we'll see.
Didn't know you applied to any MSTPs.

I think in general a PhD>MD for bench research. So much of the med school stuff is low yield and fairly irrelevant to a bench research career that a PhD I'm going to say is the better route.

But MD's make teh $$$, so I guess that's why they made MD/PhD.

Didn't know you applied to any MSTPs.

I didn't. But I did two summers of research at UT Southwestern, and then when I applied there for the MD program, they invited me to interview for MSTP also out of the blue.

Incidentally, I felt I totally bombed those MSTP interviews, because I clearly wasn't as into it as the people that really knew that was what they wanted to do 😛

i guess you have to distinguish between bench research (ice bucket, pipette, running gels) and clinical research (patients). I have done both, and am drawn more to the clinical side, so MD/PhD wasn't for me. If I had liked PCR a lot more, things might be different.

Yeah I'm pretty entertained by the sewage plant manager. Although I guess the wonderful work environment really boosts its ratings...

I love old Sandler movies. Happy/Billy/Big Daddy/Waterboy/Wedding Singer were awesome. Not a fan since 'Little Nicky'.

just when I thought I was heading to my last interview this week, I have another interview to schedule! U Chicago, though i'm not sure yet if it's just MD so far, and you have to wait to see if you get an md/phd interview too. Process is super unclear. eh.

Woo interviews!

And I got just one letter with 4 acceptances. Go figure.

Yeah, why didn't I get spammed? Makes me feel unloved. 🙁

Shareholders of companies that used endorsements from Tiger Woods to sell their products have lost an estimated $5 billion to $12 billion because of the star golfer's well-publicized zipper problem, according to a study at the University of California.

“We estimate that in the days beginning with Tiger Woods' recent car accident and ending with his announced ‘indefinite leave’ from golf, shareholders of companies that Mr. Woods endorses lost $5 billion to $12 billion in wealth,” researchers reported.

“Because most of the firms that Mr. Woods endorses are either large or owned by large parent companies, the losses are extremely widespread … Woods’ top five sponsors (Accenture, Nike, Gillette, Electronic Arts and Gatorade) lost 2-3 percent of their aggregate market value after the accident, and his core sports-related sponsors EA, Nike and PepsiCo (Gatorade) lost over four percent.”
