Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So my dad is super against this FAFSA thing. He just emailed me that he doesn't want to disclose info about his income/etc. and that because of what he makes, I probably wouldn't receive any aid anyways. I don't care much because he has some sort of plan for me if I get in.. but will NOT filling a FAFSA be detrimental to me in any way shape or form at the schools?

you can fill it out w/o parents info

Okay maybe I'll just do that then.

Sorry i'm a FAFSA noob.

think it depends if you're 23 and above. In addition, Fafsa + no parents information means only the government can supply you aid. (probably in the form of loans). Individual schools can't give you aid without this information. Unless you just get lucky and get a scholarship

miami told us they would give us aid even if we dont fill out the parent's section, you might wanna check with your schools though.

I'm 21. It sucks that I couldn't receive any school aid but my dad seems to think I wouldn't receive any regardless. I'm clueless.

You can fill out w/o as brooklyn said. The only way it can hurt you is for need based (which it sounds like you wouldnt get regardless) and other certain scholarships, schools require parental income or you will not get a dime of it. Worst case scenario for you means that you will just have all loans and no/very little scholarships or grants. Sucks but not the end of the world.

Yeah, that's when I got mine and my mother's didn't get all of hers together until last week. I guess I figured with all us pre-medical students being super proactive that most people would have sent in estimated information in early January.
no worries luun🙂 as long as its in by march 1st you should be fine at every school. No aid has really been sent out. Since most schools (all ive been to) want parental info also, no matter how proactive a pre med may be chances are you waiting for a bit as you need parents taxes.

Gotcha. Thanks for breaking that down for me. 👍

i miss poptarts, especially the chocolate ones 🙁 as part of my veg thing i decided to stop eating gelatin, and unfortunately its in pop tart frosting. so i can only eat the blank ones, and they are weak sauce.
Ouch 🙁 I wouldn't be able to live without poptarts occasionally.

I know you've told me in the past, but why did you go veg? Was it health? Personal beliefs?
If dreams ever mean anything, I think it's the feeling associated with them that's most important. So if you felt really anxious during your cat claw dreams, then you might be feeling very anxious about something in real life, something unimportant (small) that is hard to get rid of or let go.
I just wish I could ever remember my dreams.
oh, dreams . . . it looks like this thread is wandering back into girly territory. take that football fans! (hopefully you got all the football out of your system on Sunday anyway)

I am so glad all the football talk is over! I just have to avoid this thread during those times. I just don't have anything to contribute to the conversation.
Just in time for basketball season and March Madness to rev up 😀
So, I just completed my FAFSA. My guess is I'm too late for any grant money or scholarships. Add on to that the ticket my university just gave me.....I'm starting to really hate how money controls things.
I'm sure you'll be fine, you're not late at all 🙂

Nope!

Sure, JJ, just keep twisting that knife, why don't ya 🙁
I am soooooo hungry. My stomach was growling in my first class, and I still have 1.5 more to go.

I got my first tutoring request today. Yay.
I always feel terrible when my stomach is growling in anatomy lab (as it did today...)
this new facebook layout makes me even more terrified of entering my search item as my status on accident
Hmm?

Just to echo brooklyn and Elijah, I don't think this is correct. As long as you are a grad student (and you will be in the next year), you are automatically considered an independent for FAFSA purposes. However, you won't be eligible for need-based aid, and some other forms of scholarships.

Ah, that felt good; it had been a while since a good multi-quote 🙂

google buzz looks interesting. i could see myself maybe using it if it's automatically incorporated into my gmail since i have it open all the time anyway

Same here. I literally always have my Gmail open so long as I am on my computer.

lol, google buzz is the top trending topic on twitter right now

i never drink coffee....maybe i'll have to start in medical school

I've only seen people get worse w/ med school. I used to never drink caffeine at all =/

I did not start drinking coffee until my sophomore year of college. And then the addiction set in...

Same here. I used to only do those sugary Frappucino things. 👎

Then it got more intense and I realized how much money I would save if I made my own. But I don't have it everyday so that it still works when I need it.

absolute freaking truth! coffee gets expensive

Gosh, I know!! But it's just not as good if you make it yourself!!

yeah youre definitely right about that...thats why coffee expenses make it on my "must have" list in my budget, haha. kind of like rent, it's a necessary expense

i feel like i need to find something w caffeine that works for me cuz i'm sure i'll need it. i don't like any drink besides water though so i have no idea what that'll be!

Haha that's what I do too. I figure that because I don't smoke or drink (at least, not regularly), coffee can be my one vice. I budget for it. Maybe one day I will invest in one of those French press things I've heard about.

Green tea has a good bit of caffeine in it. Also, I've heard that apples have a caffeine in them as well.

EDIT: Apparently, my sources were wrong. Apples don't have caffeine in them! 🙂

Thanks for the info guys.

And Yeah... I don't drink coffee either, though I could use a real pickup right now.

My Intro Painting teacher is obsessed with this coffee place in New York called Gorilla coffee?? I think? Anyways, he asks any of the students who live there to get some for him when they go home during breaks. Then he usually winds up paying for whatever they bought for themselves as well!

i have a friend who swears by that "5 hour energy" stuff ...i dont believe it.

So I have a question for you folks. I just found out some super exciting news today about a project I've been working on for the past year. The only school I would really care to update about this would be Vandy. Would it be weird to send a post-interview update letter? Should I combine this with LOI?

Sure, it could only help you - especially if they haven't made a decision yet.

With Vandy it would be nice to get to them before/if they axe you. People who sent letters after getting waitlisted usually don't get in.

absolutely not weird at all! it would be weird if you didnt send it.

by all means, pull out all the stops and get into vandy with authority

So who would I need to write the letter to? The Dean of Admissions?

Not weird. If you were planning on sending an LOI might as well combine the update and LOI.

That's who I'd send it to.

Still snowing.

And I just at a huge piece of chocolate cake:d. Washing it down with coffee now. Too bad I missed the coffee conversation.

Now that sounds absolutely delicious.

Try a whole bunch of stuff with tea.

don't like it, unfortunately. i literally drink water, that's it haha. they have caffeine pills right? maybe i'll have to try those.

lstone-i definitely would send a letter. congrats on getting exciting news!

Or the Admissions Committee.

Hmmm... What would be more appropriate (Dean vs. Adcom)? Also, I know this has already been covered in the forum, but should I email it or send a hard copy? I feel like in this situation, it might be better to send in a hard copy, but I have no real justification for this.

Well, I addressed all my LOIs/update letters to Admissions Committee and sent both email and snail mail just in case. It's up to you because I doubt it matters either way.

still can't believe the saints won the super bowl.

i'm a life-long falcons fan. you have no idea how hard this is.

it's like being the most unpopular kid at school, except there's this one kid who's WAY nerdier and a bigger loser even than you.

but then that kid gets a car and runs over your dog. all in the same day.

wow, that's rough.

although maybe this means that if the saints can do it, the falcons can too

Kevin Durant will defend his title in the H-O-R-S-E competition at All-Star weekend.

The Oklahoma City forward will face fellow All-Star Rajon Rondo of Boston and Sacramento rookie Omri Casspi. The field was announced Monday night on TNT, which will televise Saturday's events.
