Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Honestly that has been one of the most influential experiences on my decision of medicine. The type of volunteering I do is very intimate, it's called companionship. These patients are in their houses or in facilities and you are assigned to a specific patient. I actually get to write in the patients chart and get a face sheet with information on them. You get to know these people and they become your friends, yet they are constantly dying. It takes a toll. I never thought I would have to go to a grief counseling meeting that they have each week, but I started finding myself there especially after a patient I became close with for 4 months had passed away. At the ED I felt like there was no way for me to have an influence in someone's life without me becoming a physician. At hospice I found out how much of an affect simply having a friend and someone that cared could have on a person who is nearing the end of their life.

I wanted to volunteer at a hospice for a while, especially after taking a class on death, but I don't think I could handle it emotionally on a regular basis. I see death as a very natural part of life, but when those people aren't in a comfortable situation, it makes me sad. Knowing that people everywhere die without anyone caring makes me even sadder.

To throw in my 2 cents, my main skepticism for people who try to apply after two years is that I wonder when exactly they decided they wanted to go into medicine.

For example, someone could say something like "well, in the summer between my freshman and sophomore years, I had this great experience doing ____," but then my question to them is "ok, then why were you taking all your prereqs before that, then?" It just seems to me like more often than not, people's clinical experiences are used to retroactively justify their decision to go into medicine, rather than causing their decision to go into medicine.

And maybe some people come into college knowing for sure that they want to go into medicine, but that goes along with what brooklyn was talking about in that for the most part, these people sort of made that decision without really giving themselves a chance to explore different fields.

Our overage length of stay at the hospice company i volunteer for is 2 days. That is mind numbing, but they claim it is because the patients aren't hospiced until they are really bad. In Michigan medicare covers patients up to 6 months for hospice and it can be increased if a third party physician recommends it. They pay for the entire six months up front too, I think.

Severe alzheimers sucks too. Like when they forget who you are, or start referring to you as one of their kids. It gets really sad. I also had a cancer patient and the medicine would just put him to sleep. But he would wake up from his sleep with a violent twitching that reminisced a short seizure. I would start to talk to him for 15 minutes and he would fall right back to sleep. And then he would sleep for 4-6 hours while I studied and racked up hours.
😱 wow. the hospice i work for is sometimes privately (well) funded, so they can take people on for a while. i think hospices are mandated to have volunteers so its always a good place to go

Yeah it's tough. Seeing the pain like brooklyn said and seeing people literally deteriorate is hard on anyone no matter how strong you are emotionally.

P.S. medschoolhell blog is hilarious. I like the poem titled "f**k surgery"

For me, I was pressured by my parents to become a physician. At the same time, I have an unusually large number of immediate family members who are physicians and my mother has worked as a medical biller for numerous physicians. I have seen the lifestyle and am familiar with the dedication it requires. I have also seen that some of them actually don't enjoy their work. I have learned a lot from my experiences and also in growing with myself. Before choosing medicine as a career I knew I wanted to work with people. Doing research in a lab setting just help me confirm that I want to work with people and although I can see myself doing research, I don't want to work as a researcher my entire life. I would much rather have a job where I interact with different people on a routine basis. I also knew I wanted a job to do with the sciences because science has intrigued me since I was little. Being able to apply science to people and their health is what I want to do; no matter what it takes for me to be able to practice this application I thought and now have confirmed that this is what I want to do. Sure there are times when I doubt, like having received a crappy grade on a practical or while reading over articles on the shaker k+ channel in drosophilia. But in the end, I know where I want to be and although that decision was partially made before I chose to go to college, every experience I have had has helped further my passion for medicine.

That's why I'm always skeptical of people who say they wanted to be a doctor since they were 5. I was like fingerpainting and watching Disney movies and wanting a pet monkey at that age.

5% of all hours worked by hospice has to be volunteer hours due to medicare regulations. I don't think funding is an issue for the hospice I work at. I think it's that patients are classified as hospice when they become really really bad. Not all hospice patients are terminally ill, some are just really old or are nearing their death bed. I've taken assignments only to go to the nursing home and find out they died earlier that week.

Me, too. I know there are also a ton of people who have doctors for both parents, like Brooklyn, and I wonder about them sometimes as well. I would just hate to see somebody going into medicine just because they wanted to do what their parents did/wanted/expected.

My sister is taking a visit to Loyola for undergrad, she's deciding if she wants to go there. My whole family is going because there's some scholarship banquet and asked me if I wanted to come along.

👍 should be a good time

im hoping for 3-4 hours of solid sleep. peace ou

yea, those people are some gnomes 🙂

Seriously, if I was currently what I wanted to be when I was 5, I would be a firetruck.

That's why I like nontrad students. They've been somewhere else and decided that they're looking for something more. I know some people who went straight into finance after college and are now pursuing the doctor path. They made a ****-ton of money for someone with just a bachelor's, but they realized there was no personal satisfaction in the job.

I wanted to drive a lambo and I wanted to be a chef. I liked baking cookies with the rents when I was little... I'm not as effeminate anymore.

 I would be an astronaut.

Still super nerdy when it comes to space/the universe though. 😎

Isn't it easier to become a doctor than an astronaut? I remember when I saw that one Adam Sandler movie I wanted to become an astronaut, but shortly thereafter changed my mind for some reason. I wanted to work on a demolition rig at one point as well. I also wanted to work on an ambulance when I was little and now I get to do that 😎 (I loved the lights). (At one point I'm going to drive the ambulance to a backyard rave at night and we'll all dance to the lights and techno music!!!)

I forgot how physically painful a concert can be. My right toe and left leg are killing me from various mosh pit injuries, and my neck is so sore I can't move it very well. I think I'm just to small to mosh (and I took a spill on some stairs falling on my leg ).

...

While I was shadowing a year or two ago, I saw someone flatline and die after like 25 mins of attempted resuscitation. That was my first time seeing someone die, and I was surprised at how everyone just calmly walked out of the room and started chatting again. I was surprised myself at how numb I was to the whole situation and I realized I don't want to be a cold-hearted bitch doctor when I grow up. I don't know...at least they could have taken a couple of minutes to reflect.

Ugh that sounds rough. I usually try to stay away from the mosh pits. I wonder what a mosh pit at rap concert would end up like?? That would be interesting to see.

Normally I do - I'm the person that wants to enjoy and actually hear the music. But the band I went for had already finished and I didn't care too much about the current one. I was drunk and bored = mosh pit.

Cooking is a much sought-after skill for all genders. Uh, last season's Top Chef winner? Hot.

I'm a bigger guy so I'm not scared of anyone, but I have accumulated injuries from sports and it would just be a shame to aggravate any of those injuries for something like a mosh pit. Like believe me, I don't hold back or anything and I live life to the fullest, but a mosh pit for me is like asking for trouble.

I only watch Food Network for my cooking shows. It just makes sense ya know? Why would I watch a channel that has reality tv shows and soaps for my cooking shows? If someone needs to pick a chef it's gotta be Food Network. Their whole tv channel is about food 😍

The pit last night was very polite, though - everyone was helping people up. It was obvious they were novice teenagers. I've seen some serious stuff go down in mosh pits, and that was a mild one. I just hate the big guys that stand on the outside and just push people in or down.

I think I've drank almost 2 gallons of water today.

Umm...Paula Deen puts at least a stick a butter in everything and Rachel Ray annoys me. And Sandra Lee is more about her table decorations than her food. Don't think I don't know my Food Network people too.

That would probably be me if I moshed lol. That's a lot of water weight. You're kidney and aquaporins will be doing work.

Is it just me, or should the Lazy Town lil Jon mashup have more than just 2 million views?

Sandra Lee is decent looking and Giada de Laurentiis is amazing. I like Tyler's ultimate and Iron Chef a lot. All those unwrapped episodes are really interesting. And Good Eats is always fun because it takes a scientific approach to cooking.

She is! I definitely noticed that.

I love FoodNetwork. My favorite is Tyler's Ultimate and the Neelys. Guy's Big Bite is pretty good, but I don't really like him. Cooking for Real and Giada's 🙂love🙂 are decent. I'd rather watch Giada than eat most of her food, though - it's just not my style most of the time.

I love how the Neelys either barbecue everything or cook some type of pig.

Not when it's hamburger patties!

Her food looks delicious, but Giada wears subtly low cut shirts to keep a certain viewer population interested. I'm just sayin.

I actually love talking about food when I'm starving (no sarcasm), but I have to be up in 5 hrs. Good night!

This certain population is obviously me and met. She would be the perfect wife, her looks and her food omg.

I love southern barbecue, but it's hard to find good cuts of meat up here in Michigan. Chopped is awesome as well. The Bobby Flay challenge ones are cool too. Guys' Big Bite is cool, but the travel channel shows on food other than man vs. food make Guys' Big Bite look crappy.

G' night everyone, I have class as well in 4.5 hours have to be up in 4 hours yeesh.

Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant,” the resolution said, “but rather a highly beneficial ingredient for all plant life.

Only 23 percent of Christian conservatives surveyed accepted that there was “solid evidence” that the Earth was warming because of human activity, compared with 36 percent of the American population as a whole.

36% of the American population?? What kind of denial drug is the other 64% smoking? I would like some... must be powerful stuff. 😛

I think Giada is gorgeous but she does have a minor case of "the crazy eye" (technical term)...hers isn't as obvious as that blonde chick's (don't I sound nice).
I always end up watching food network when I run on treadmill....one time during a long run..all the shows were featuring bacon...I nearly threw up like 5 times. The longer you stay a veg, the more violent your aversion to stuff you hated in the first place becomes it seems.

stein...clearly they are smoking something extra potent...or they are perfectly content to flush Earth down the "omg it effing sucks here" hole.

Oh and g'morning everyone!

i worked waaaaaaaaay harder my 2 years out of school than in school, i think.

i personally think they should make everyone serve in the military for like 2 years or work for a legit tax paying job for a year or two in between college. life would be fun

Getting into a ****ty job for the most bloodthirsty country on the planet? No thanks. The military is inefficient as hell and the average soldier is about as smart as an undergrad--which is to say, not very.

I kinda envy my mentor's 1 year stint in the Swiss army before he got his MD/PhD.

As for a legit tax-paying job, sure, just magically remove the US's 10% unemployment rate. I'd be happy to work as an EMT if I could find a ****ing job!

LSU's admin is really starting to get me mad. This is the 4th time they've started some construction that kills parking spaces in the MIDDLE of the semester. Not to mention how they switch email, data storage and servers in the middle of scheduling or the semester. Why don't you wait until a break to do this!

Now there's only one place to enter campus from the biggest lot on school (of course the only spot to walk is not centrally located)!!! How do they expect us to get to class? Walk a mile around some fences that don't even need to be there?

this is the second time you've posted this in a manner which implies that it's contributing something to the conversation.

but it isn't.

Have you scrolled down the PreAllo board? It's everywhere. 😕

not the hamster I mean.

So....I crashed at 7:30 last night after dinner and missed a lot of discussion... 🙁

agreed!

you know, i think was taken aback in how you so openly shared your identity. but its refreshing! there isn't a lot of transparency in this process as it is.

Thanks! I am glad at least one person doesn't think I am a freak 😉
I agree, though, that if someone really wanted to identify you based on your posts, they could. So what's the point in trying to remain anonymous? The funny part is that I am not even trying to convince other people to do it...I am just doing it myself and it's making people uncomfortable for some reason. It's amusing me, actually, that people are so bothered by it.

Truth. When my avatar was me, I got a bajillion PMs about it.

Funny, I haven't received one PM about it and I have had it that way for almost a month. It's fine if they do though...I am not one to follow a trend. People are welcome to PM me and try to change my mind though, I will entertain their arguments. I am willing to take the good with the bad...I think when I visit another school and someone recognizes me from SDN, it will be worthwhile. I wouldn't invest this much time into something without at least trying to build lasting friendships with people I click with.
