people think they can do clinicals and research at the same time. that is highly unlikely. so at the end, one of the degrees will most likely be nearly useless, unless you are extremely good

Yeah, I think doing one degree would probably be a better choice for me, with all things considered....

I guess I'm too optimistic. It's hard to judge as a premed if I could seriously attempt to be both a clinician and a researcher. The only thing that holds me back is that I am not totally enamored with being in the clinics.

we actually had a CT surgeon give a talk about the career path and he was asked honestly to give advice to women going into surgery and he just had to come out and be like... um don't plan on having a family

Yeah, I've had tons of current md/phd students tell me to say that during the interviews.... I don't think I'll ever really consider it. But who knows.

Yeah, but applying internally sucks because then you'll have the debt of first year hanging over your head. Ehhhhh.

I wouldn't let the threads deter you, if it's worth it or not has always and always will be a personal thing. It is good to know what your getting into and to have reasonable expectations, which those threads can be helpful for.

yea i said i wanted to be a basic scientists with the md resource for my lab... ie patient access, sample/organ access to directly ask relevant questions (ie use primary cells instead of random ass cell lines, do ex vivo experiments in organ modules instead of the invitro to mice method etc)

ahh, my bad. I think an MD/MBA makes sense for some situations, like if you want to run a biotech or hospital or something along those lines.

my purchase plans are very sarcastic. i don't know where i will get a job or where i will even go to school, believe me i want to start saving before i start spending.

realistically though, at one point i need to get a porsche. mainly so that my son can drive it to prom as i was allowed to do and my father and his father etc. i just want my children to have the same luxuries as i had.

and everyone has a different experience

one of my interviewers was a daughter of a nobel laureate phd. she was mentored by a highly accomplished (nominated for a nobel) MD basic scientist researcher and he told her to just go to med school and do research. she went to med school, dropped out and did a phd. so naturally, she was hatin on anyone that wanted to be clinical and went through the md/phd interview process

and then you get the other md only researchers who think the phd is overrated and alll

there's a girl @ OU who is middle eastern like myself. her father is one of the most famous physicians among middle easterners in my area and both of her older sister's have just recently finished med school and are residents. that's a little pressure. she's not super bright though... er at least she is having trouble in gen chem. i dunno why everyone stumbles in gen chem.

i think ENT is a great field to go into, if you are worried about the lifestyle

To answer two it's a no. It makes things awkward. You know someone from when you are little. You don't see them at all for a long time. Then you meet them in the library one day. It's just weird. Plus she's middle eastern, but she's into black guys (I wonder why?).
