Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
people think they can do clinicals and research at the same time. that is highly unlikely. so at the end, one of the degrees will most likely be nearly useless, unless you are extremely good

my parents are dual layered but went to clinical academia
Yeah, I think doing one degree would probably be a better choice for me, with all things considered....

I guess I'm too optimistic. It's hard to judge as a premed if I could seriously attempt to be both a clinician and a researcher. The only thing that holds me back is that I am not totally enamored with being in the clinics.

most of your interviewers will be straight PhDs that willl absolutely get angry if you say you want to do it 50/50. they will be like, wow we spend 100% of our time writing grants... do you really think you can outcompete us spending only 50% of the time for the lab?

Medical scientist training program. It's the gov sponsored MD/PhD programs.

so it's the free md/phd programs? they pay for both md and phd?

I'm also way too lazy to use search, so what schools offer md/phd with mstp and what schools offer md/jd, i'm thinking about just becoming a malpractice lawyer due to all these medicine is not worth it threads.

You've got some serious plans. I think with my first real pay check I am going to buy an awesome watch. Family heirloom type watch...

I have the family heirloom watch. I almost lost it, you should've seen the look on my grandfather's face. It's family tradition to get a porsche as well.

Yeah, I can understand that. Honestly, thou, I'm the kind of person who would rather be a full time researcher than a full time clinician.

I was planning on saying something like the standard "I plan on being 20/80 and going into a traditional MD/PhD field like path".

path is definitely the best one >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

anyother clinical fields for phd

My dad's dad was worked at a nickel plant (see: no money) and my dad is too cheap to buy a quality watch. However, I want to have one I can pass down to my kids, if I have them. I think that kind of tradition is cool.

yeah the paid for MD/PhD + living stipend.

I wouldn't let the threads deter you, if it's worth it or not has always and always will be a personal thing. It is good to know what your getting into and to have reasonable expectations, which those threads can be helpful for.

Baaahhhh.

Going to dinner and being in the same seat I was in for a first day with my most recent ex = phooey on my mood. It kind of just hit me.

it is very cool. pulp fiction typ've thing.
my family is pretty well off, so it's not like there's any pressure on me or anything (tons of pressure).

i think a lot of them actually. you can also apply internally after your first year... which is what you usually do anyway for those programs

that makes sense. thanks for the insight.

yea i said i wanted to be a basic scientists with the md resource for my lab... ie patient access, sample/organ access to directly ask relevant questions (ie use primary cells instead of random ass cell lines, do ex vivo experiments in organ modules instead of the invitro to mice method etc)

fail

I'm being kind've sarcastic. Those threads are funny though.

I have no big purchase plans post-residency. Honda Civics 4 life😎.

my purchase plans are very sarcastic. i don't know where i will get a job or where i will even go to school, believe me i want to start saving before i start spending.

realistically though, at one point i need to get a porsche. mainly so that my son can drive it to prom as i was allowed to do and my father and his father etc. i just want my children to have the same luxuries as i had.

pac10 sucks, they should just let washington in and let cal go to nit. but they probly both make it

Dude, that is brilliant... I'm going to consider saying something like that.... Thanks!

yea, best part of the process is that the interviewers will only judge you based on their experience

and everyone has a different experience

one of my interviewers was a daughter of a nobel laureate phd. she was mentored by a highly accomplished (nominated for a nobel) MD basic scientist researcher and he told her to just go to med school and do research. she went to med school, dropped out and did a phd. so naturally, she was hatin on anyone that wanted to be clinical and went through the md/phd interview process

and then you get the other md only researchers who think the phd is overrated and alll

Geographic balance and all that. More money for the NCAA in terms of viewership, I guess?

 you know they aren't gonna make it past the 2nd round. so viewer ship will be limited to like... monday or tuesday on like 1 PM EST or like 10 PM PST

I feel you. I'm the first son of a doctor that is super well known in my hometown...

there's a girl @ OU who is middle eastern like myself. her father is one of the most famous physicians among middle easterners in my area and both of her older sister's have just recently finished med school and are residents. that's a little pressure. she's not super bright though... er at least she is having trouble in gen chem. i dunno why everyone stumbles in gen chem.

Damn... So did you have a pretty good idea who was going to interview you for the PhD part at most of the places you interviewed at?

Wow, now that sucks.

yea its unlikely you will make much higher in academia

Yeah I think the offer was private practice.

hahaha. I feel unloved now :d

Do you want me there at 11 or 1?

11 is totally fine with me, especially since I don't know when the next time I'd see you would be. We can play more bananagrams! And I might actually peel more than twice in a game!

i think its even harder for women though (academia, i mean)

we actually had a CT surgeon give a talk about the career path and he was asked honestly to give advice to women going into surgery and he just had to come out and be like... um don't plan on having a family

I shadowed a female trauma surgeon. Crazzzzy schedule, but she made a real effort to set aside time with her kids.

Wow, now that sucks.

yeah. attractive girl, but i have no shot our families are too close of friends. her older sister actually broke down in med school in florida, so her father took a sabbatical and moved to florida to help her out and keep her motivated. she was really homesick and stuff i guess.

it's crazy the people you meet at the library.

Ok, two things here.
1. Her dad took a sabbatical?!? That's crazy, dude.
2. What do you mean you have no chance?!?! Shouldn't family closeness = relationship more likely to happen?

trauma and ED are usually university/academia associated and you never are really worried about recruiting patients. plus you are gonna bill the **** out of a person

i think people take a huge hit in CT (since its dying and patients are going to interv. measures), neuro, plastics, and then on. neuro and plastics overhead charges are pretty big so you are gonna be working non stop for your own benefit

i think ENT is a great field to go into, if you are worried about the lifestyle

kobe says that if you run isolation enough times, you are bound to score

My friends dad who is an MD/PhD went into clinical only private practice ENT....

Is about 50, has a beach house in florida, and three super intelligent kids...

Living the dream...

To answer two it's a no. It makes things awkward. You know someone from when you are little. You don't see them at all for a long time. Then you meet them in the library one day. It's just weird. Plus she's middle eastern, but she's into black guys (I wonder why?).
