Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
nope. and he'll get zero bipartisan support in Congress for the rest of his term. But he'll get his way anyway. Checks and balances my glutes.

Uh, "checks and balances" does not refer to the two-party system, bipartisanship, or the bicameral legislature in any way. Nor does it imply that any of the three branches of government, namely executive, legislative, or judicial, are obligated to oppose the others. If they are in agreement, they are in agreement. If you don't want them to be in agreement, you should've been more aggressive about turning out support for your candidate/party/agenda in November.

Got the official kick out of the door by Duke this morning.

Sorry Taty!!!

Is it wrong of me to be upset that my best friend told me she met a boy through email? OK let me add on to that... she's also my roommate, but she's been living at home for the past like 3 weeks, so I'm lonely all the time and stuck with the crazy roommates, so I'm upset about that too.

Sorry to hear that.🙁🙁🙁
It is ok. I have a school that loved me as much as I loved them, so I am fortunate. A little tough letting go of a dream but everyone has to do it one time or another.

ooooo is this a challenge to my new nickname for mctatertots????

McTT - duke sucks for not taking you.
haha you guys are going crazy with the nicknames!
agreed on the bolded statement. sucks that i don't even get a chance to possibly be classmates with you!!!

maybe i can trick (I mean convince) ksmi into coming to Tulane with me lol

i'm feeling kind of conflicted this morning. i think HST probably made an epic mistake by accepting me and i'm worried about how intense life for the next four years might be. :scared:

tattoo, i wish we could have been classmates. i'd come up with a new nickname for you every week

Does not sound like a reason for anger to me. Make peace not war🙂.

That'd be super fun!!!!!! You'll love LA! Or at least I hope you do!

All better. She said she's moving back next week, and I think that's why I've been so upset with her. I just can't deal with the crazy roommates by myself.

So good morning everyone!

I officially got waitlisted at Miami yesterday. I'm okay with that though because I knew I was interviewing for a waitlist spot when I went. Maybe if I send them a few really nice letters, they will take me in? 🙂

Couldn't hurt! 😀

The advice I give for people waitlisted and letter campaigning here is to make the case for how awesome you are and how awesome you (and we) would be here (together😍). Make them understand that they'd really be missing out if they didn't take you.🙂

(The trick with that is to sound confident and not cocky/desperate at the same time, which is a hard thing to pull off, especially for me.😳)

I might have to wait until mid June to let go of my dream. I'd rather let it go sooner if I have to.

I will probably be in NOLA for the medical education, just not at Tulane.

Maybe. Does Miami have good movement? It seems like one of those schools that should have good waitlist movement.

i think they do have a decent waitlist movement. they interview very few people and accept a high number of them (like 80% or something initially), so i think you have a good shot.

do they tell you if its temporary waitlist or no?

That's what I've attempted to do with the letters I've written so far. Like you said though, it's very tricky.

Not sure about this year. I think that traditionally, yes, they have had good waitlist movement, but because their FAU campus closed and the Miami campus had to absorb those acceptances, I doubt it will move as much.

so its basically tulane for sure taty?

And speaking of letters, im pretty sure i was a tad too much on the desperate side but w/e lol. Maybe they will take that desperation as part of my commitment....its hard not to sound desperate when you are? 😛

From what I understand, they tell us about the temporary waitlist in the official letter they mail. In the email, they aren't specific about it.

I agree. I'm saving my complete patheticness for my May 15th letter. I was only partially pathetic in this last one.

I guess that depends on whether I am WL at Emory or not.

I am also kind of having cold feet because there is a thread in School Specific with people hating on Tulane and I am still holding my spot at MCG. I didn't like the culture of MCG but not going to lie-with the healthcare reform passing...it is harder for me to not consider it an option.

Bah...I feel like such a flake.

Do those schools have Second Looks you can go to?

Tulane does.

I would go to that, then, and make a decision based on which one you actually like. If you don't like a school or its learning environment, there's no need to make your first four years of medical education miserable just because it's cheaper to do so. You learn better when you're happy, despite the conventional SDN wisdom that cheaper is inherently better.

As for HCR, that won't affect you for years and will likely have changed significantly by the time it does.

your not a flake!🙂. Most of us are in a similar situation, at least i know i am. I feel like im compelled to take the cheapest option regardless. Also just about HC and all that, most of what will affect us wont happen until 2014 and even then who knows. Maybe all this doom and gloom will be for nothing. No one knows how its going to work at this time, salaries are going to fall but maybe its not going to be as horrible as everyone thinks? Regardless i think its hard to base a decision on something that nobody knows how a program will or wont work. Just my 2cents. Regardless youll do fine!🙂

A lot of people hate on Tulane because they have a preconceived notion that New Orleans sucks.

The only reason I'm biased against Tulane is because I have LSU-NO, which has very similar clinical training and is 30k/year cheaper. I just think that if you're from LA, Tulane shouldn't be too much of an option.

sorry about dook tatar tats
I choose to believe the doc I shadow who said:
"you will do great anywhere, we just have to get you back for residency"
much nicer thought than the one that two weeks of d--- hell left me with.

Mornin' all!! I am thinking today might be the big day for Hopkins....thinking positive thoughts 😍

How is everyone today?

I'm in kind of a similar situation with VCU.

People keep telling me I'm dumb not to take the cheap in-state option, but I still keep thinking about it.

My Tulane is VCU, and my MCG is LSU - the situations are quite similar.

oh and I am pretty sure MCG is graded. Not really a problem for me but I was looking forward to reduced stress of P/F

You know whats best its just with the uncertainty of medicine (and near 100% chance of salary drops and tuition rising), Im not sure for myself i could validate an option that costs 100k+ more. Then again im probably more jaded and think about money issues because i have a wife and son to consider in this process and its def not all about whats best for me😛. For me, id be happy studying medicine near anywhere, the chance to save 100k+ would just be to great for me to pass. Id just make sure i didnt even apply to any LA residency and got out

Thanks for the positive vibes!!! 🙂 Can I enjoy the day in So. Cal. with you??? I will be there all of next week for spring break, actually. I am SO excited!!!!
Gosh, it's hard to say what my top choice is anymore. I have been extraordinarily fortunate in this cycle to have the interviews I have had- I NEVER expected it with my low mcat score. I would have to say that UCSD was my best interview by far. I loved the student-run clinic, the humanitarian initiative, the under-served population, and the general commitment to a healthy lifestyle (being in SD and all...) As far as an academic/research community & an an inpsirational interview- Hopkins was AMAZING!! I walked away with something to work towards...I loved their community and the energy I felt just from walking around the campus. There is so much history there. If I got in to JHU, it would be really really hard to turn down that offer (not just for the reputation of the school, I promise)- Hopkins is so much more than a name. Dartmouth was a lovely community as well- a little small and rural for my tastes. I am also from the southwest and have never lived in snow...not sure yet how that will work out. The Dartmouth option is a fully funded MD-PhD program, though. I am trying not to weigh finances into it and just go more for happiness/high quality of life...but a 24K stipend, health insurance, and tuition reimbursement is hard to ignore. At the end of the day, I just feel really lucky to have options and I know that there are no "wrong" choices. I have family in So. Cal., so it would be nice to stay close to home. I also happen to love it there...meh, I am confused (in a good way) :luck:

If I had to make a decision today, I think I would go with PRIME-Heq at UCSD and plan to pursue the MPH at Hopkins...but that's counting a lot of chickens before they hatch. I believe in optimism 😉

How about you? Where are you thinking of going?

enjoy socal! man i love it here🙂. As far as where im going to its basically the cheapest option. Ive been accepted at a few schools but finances are going to play the largest role since all the schools im in at i love (and the ones i didnt i withdrew from.) I guess since im trying to stay close to home UCI and UCLA (WL at both🙁 ) would be my top choices at this point but im also in at uw madison and uc davis, which i also love just as much. Im trying to balance staying close to home and taking whats cheapest. Regardless, like you, my low mcat i thought was going to kill me but ill be somewhere i like for sure so i try not to stress so much🙂.

oh and I am pretty sure MCG is graded. Not really a problem for me but I was looking forward to reduced stress of P/F

No, no. Graded is a huge deal. Pass-fail is so much less stress. I've been taking grad classes on the side that are not PF and, my god, is that sooooo much more stressful than anything on the MD side of things.

Hello,

Doing a double, tired... :meanie:

Sorry to hear about the test Met. And you know what tat, forget about the lowly D, you WILL kick arse somewhere!!

Having trouble with the whole cheap state school versus desired school too.. a lot to think about it!
