It seriously is 3 a.m. FML. Thankfully some girl did my orgo lab for me for tomorrow.

Can't show off my sports knowledge or my mad chedda by getting great seats @ the Stargazer convention... Probably could find a way to show off chedda there though, by like lacing someone or something.

Sorry to pop in randomly but I read this thread when I'm on breaks sometimes just for entertainment. Anyway, I thought this was hilarious. This sounds just like a friend I had in high school and college. He was always pissed and annoyed that no one was as smart as him or nothing was as challenging. He was a physics and chem major.

I grew up right next to the best sports club in China, so I guess I saw a lot of pro athletes and Olympians walking around. As a little kid, I didn't really care much tho.

Yeah that happens when you're little. Can't blame you I've had my dad freak out like, "Oaklandguy that's Barry Sanders, lets get his autograph!" and i'm just like, "daddy I wanna go home!"

lol yea, the only person i recognized was the tallest chinese guy at the time, some basketball player. dude's like 7 feet tall, and when i walked past him i was in AWE. I mean, 7 feet tall guys stand out anywhere, but in CHINA? it was like holy shizzle! He gave me my first basketball too, because he owed one of my relatives a favor or something, so that's how I sorta knew about him.
 
I know this is a weird place to ask this. But I recently found out that USC has molecular biology as a requirement for their med school. Are there any other med-schools that have "weird" requirements like this and is there a good place to find them out? I know the MSAR has them, but some are listed as "other pre-med requirements".

Haha thats pretty legit, I wonder what kind of favor lol. Apparently some famous athletes work out at the gym I have a membership too, and I know where a couple live because their in my neighborhood, but it's like their normal people. I saw one red wing player one time at the mall and I just went up to him and I kind've lost what I wanted to say, so I was just like "thank you" and he smiled and gave me a high five. I was 18 too, so it was really awkward. Darren McCarty, the best bar fighter in the history of the bar fight.

Yep. For example, Hopkins requires like 21 humanities/social sciences credits. I think Emory requires 18 or so. Some schools require Biochem. For something like molecular biology it can usually mean a wide range of courses, like Microbio, or Eukaryotic Cells or something like that. They're usually fairly flexible about things like that(IDK if USC is like that tho).

And 😆 at this thread in the PA forum being the wrong place to ask

Some won't take AP credits for things like English and other non-science stuff.

You just want to make sure schools need stuff like Biochem, molecular bio, English, etc.... before you apply there.

I didn't wanna look like a tool and start a completely new thread.

I'll have biochem. My school only offers molecular once every 2 years so that is why I asked. My school requires 24 general education credits for graduation. I don't know how many count for humanities, but I'll have empty slots to fill for senior year and I have to be full time to stay on the parents insurance, boo. Plus, I have scholarship $$$ so I might as well use it.
 
Do you guys think it's worth going out of my way to take molecular biology though or like neurology?

If you're having GPA issues, it might be worth it to take a higher level class and try to prove that you can handle them. But if GPA isn't really an issue, then it's a good idea to go light on your senior year, because either they'll make your life hell when you have to go to interviews or if you get in early you'll just skip them anyways like met :laugh:

My GPA right now is a little higher than 3.6, my EMT-B class was 12 credits of 3.5 which didn't help. I feel as though I can be up to a 3.7 by the time I apply. I just don't think my university gets a rep for how hard it grades. Some of my classes need a 98% to get a 4.0 and like their not easy. So I'll have a 90% in the class and have to settle for a 3.5. Or like one of my biology classes, I got a 95% and ended up with a 3.8. And then I have 1 C, 1 B-, and 1 3.5 which I guess is a B+/A- which are holding me down other than my EMT-B. If I get a solid MCAT score I know I should be fine, I just want to have the greatest chance possible going in.

An A under OU policy is 3.6-4.0. The school is at about a 15% A's for all classes. Most bio classes can range from 10%-30%, but most bio classes don't have the 98% thing. My anthropology class has it at 99-100% for a 4.0 and it drops by increments of 2% for every .1 gpa. making an 80% a 3.0 which is fair I guess. Then it drops by 1% for every .1, so a 70% is a 2.0. I got a 68% on our quiz today 👎, but he drops the lowest one. Also, classes like organic are a 91% = 4.0. My calc-based physics was a 90% = 4.0 and 75% = 3.0.

Pretty much. Of course, it's biting me in the ass right now. I haven't made a single A on a test this semester after 3 straight semesters of nothing but As on all tests.

Again, I got screwed for one of my classes, it's called WRT 160, the average for the department is 32% A's, the average for my class was 0%...

It can be at times. Some classes are like a 90% is an A and the teacher takes the top grade and makes it a 100%. Some are no curve what-so-ever. It's weird, but it's funny how I'm getting a 4.0 in graduate level physiology and I'll be getting like a 3.5 in anthropology and got a 2.8 in composition II.

Ew, that sounds not cool. I'm so glad my school does >90 = A = 4.0, 80-89 = B = 3.0, etc.

At LSU, it's usually a 10 point scale. 90 is A, 80 is B, 70 is C, etc...

Only a few exceptions - i.e. my Organic I Honors had an 88 for an A and a 70 for a B.

I hate curved crap, straight scale is so much better. That's why I need to find out if LSU's grading (H/HP/P/F) is based on percentiles relative to the class performance or straight percentages.

I didn't know about that whole spreadsheet thing. I went to the chair of the biochemistry department asking him what I should do, and he didn't believe that my teacher was like that and assumed I just felt entitled. When he saw my teacher's distribution he tried to vouch for me, but nothing was done because the teacher grades consistently... It's over and done with now, but now I know how to look up teacher's gradings and know how to truly pick a "good" prof without having to rely on the inconsistencies of ratemyprofessor.com

Yeah straight scale is probably the best. But I even like UMich undergrad which posts the distribution for each class, so no matter what the top 20% get an A, or something of that nature. I feel like I'm always in the top 20%.
