Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
What I would do: I would bug Pitt to get me stuff before April 15 so I could make a decision. If they don't, I'd go to Iowa, have the fiancee go to WashU and then bug WashU like crazy to get off the waitlist. They seem to love people who love them and there is pretty decent WL movement, so I think you'd have a great shot. And unlike at Michigan, they give some pretty significant need based aid, so it's not like you'd be locking yourself into extreme debt. Then again, maybe Michigan will still come through.

this is what I would do too. plus, Iowa is a pretty strong med school by every standard and you would be <5 hours away

😛
Story of my life (or at least this year):

WashU - fiancee accepted and loves it, me WL'd and probably rejected

UChicago - $90k over four years, fiancee rejected.

Northwestern - $100k over four years, fiancee didn't interview.

Iowa - Even my cash-strapped state school offers $40k over four years. Fiancee accepted, but their pharmacology program is terrrrible and is her last choice.

Pittsburgh - We're both accepted and we both liked it, but they don't release aid packages until late April/early May, which is AFTER her April 15th deadline to decide on a grad school. 😡

UMich - Both accepted, both absolutely loved the school... $0 in merit aid. Zip. Nada. $200k+ in debt? No thanks.

What am I supposed to do? 🙁

wow this sounds like an impossible situation. hopefully pitt will give you their fin aid package early!

i'm love love loving this weather🙂 spent the whole day outside with the kiddos after we got back from the doctors! ian asked his pediatrician if he was gonna remove his brain and the doc was like uhhh no not today, don't worry😛

Not fair.

So to kind of explain what happened: the Pre-Allo mods and admins have been talking over the "off-topic" issue. We came to the conclusion that the only fair way to do this was to move all the "off-topic" threads into another forum. The PA mods felt that the Lounge was the best place because there's more traffic there, and because we wouldn't have to worry about moderating them there. Unbeknowst to us, SDN legal informed the admins that the Lounge must be closed due to legal issues, (if you go in there, I think you can see that it's a mess). We found this out post-moving the thread to the Lounge, so we moved the off-topic threads to All-Students which was the next best option.

So sorry everyone. I wanted to stay in PA too, but it's for the best of SDN to keep it this way.

:meanie: sammich's very off-topic sweet sixteen threads didn't get moved i see :ninja:

Just my opinion, but I think a relationship can survive 200k of debt better than 4 very busy years of being 5 hours apart.

I like blobby's plan. And maybe throw in bugging Michigan to reconsider (are they receptive to that?)

Hey guys!!! It's just a coincidence that this thread is moved April 1st...

Random Oakland University fact of the day: The Eye Research Institute at OU was founded by Everett V. Kinsey, the man who found out that giving 100% O2 to infants causes them to become blind.

There it is. All of you should be waiting a year so you can apply to Oakland this upcoming cycle.

Wait, why does pure O2 make babies blind?

This.

If I were to send WashU a love letter, who would I send it to and what should I say? I haven't sent a LOI or anything yet.

Honestly I would think about the future. Monetary issues are huge, but you have to think about residency too and because it's your fiancee you need to think about raising a family in the state and what-not. $200k in debt is atrocious, but it seems like both of you loved the school and UMich grads get pretty sweet residencies. You seemed pretty set on UMich too. $200k debt is a ton, but at the same time it's 1 year of work as a doctor.

Also UChicago is about a 5 hour drive from UMich, less than 2 hour airplane (although waiting at the airport may end up taking 5 hours). Financially it may make sense for you to go to Chicago and the fiancee to go to UMich. It may be a long drive, but I think it's definitely doable.

Wait so this is actually permanent? I'm not sure if I will believe this until tomorrow comes around....

But if so, that's BS. I understand that off-topic threads don't belong on Pre-Allo, but the Class Threads should stay.

We'll see, I'm still believing that this is an April Fool's thing.
Honestly, if this was an April Fool's Trick, it would be a pricey one at that; the movement of megathreads that draw in a large number of hits like some of these threads also messes with Google referrals we consistently rely upon for streaming users to our site. If anyone remembers far back enough (few years ago), when we had some megathreads like this deleted from the Lounge due to server constraints (which also wiped out 1000's of posts for some users), it also put SDN in a temporary defunct status with Google referrals, that required over a week to revert. If there's one thing we learned, it's to not mess with these types of threads unless necessary. Interestingly enough, some of the pre-allo threads in total, draws double digit percentages in maintaining user turnover, which also ultimately means continued SDN revenue to run and maintain our servers (google ads, donors, SDN partnership investment in a thriving site).

Yeah, as EMT's you aren't supposed to give newborns 100% O2 either, instead you put the mask near their face or something of that nature.

that'd make more sense(though not by a whole lot), if google referrals is still around

what is this bullsht, the class specific thread contains tons of info for applicants at that stage

No they didn't and we discussed those. We ultimately decided that since those threads have a foreseeable end (i.e. when the tournament is over), they can stay in PA until then. Threads like this don't and will crowd the PA forum until who knows when. Again, I'm not happy about it either guys, and I'm sure you still won't believe us. But I guess eventually, you'll have to. Sorry. 🙁

I guess I'm too old for the up to date tech crowd 😳 Whatever it's called, Google referrals or adsense, playing around with massive megathreads affects the money maker. There's probably better terminology for this, lol.

So the SDN staff decided to implement this rule on 4-1????? Interesting choice of date. Like they couldn't do it yesterday or wait till tomorrow?

FTR i expect to see any debate like the creationism thread going on right now to be moved too

Beginning of a new month, fiscal period and such, I think. I really don't understand how all the ads and stuff work, but we were told that implementing the policy at the beginning of a month was the best way to do it. Didn't even cross my mind until today that it was gonna happen on April Fool's.

Dang man, that's tough. If I were you, I'd probably go to Iowa, especially if your gf goes to WashU.

Yeah, this is going to be a tough call. Funny story though, she had declined her Northwestern interview because of a crazy test week and tons of stress going on, plus we'd both been accepted at other schools together. Anyway, since she didn't end up getting into UChicago and I have two great Chicago options, she sent NWern an email asking for the interview back, at least for a WL position, and at her own expense. This should be interesting... 😛

Probably gonna go Beatrix Kiddo on someone's a.ss if this thread isn't back in PA in about 5 hours.

Just sayin'.

stein, you can't try to convince your girlfriend to go to Iowa?

i'd say in overall basic science Iowa is just as good as Northwestern and Chicago. Pitt is great but most of the good labs there work 10-12 hours a day/6 days a week ala UCSD/Scripps. Iowa's faculty are great and very well renowned (maybe not as much so in pharm as UMich) and their funding is great. Maybe she could revisit and look into interdisciplinary labs?

you'd save tons of money, which is extremely crucial if you or more importantly your fiancee decides to go into academia. A PhD from Iowa (american born) can go into any post-doctoral work she would desire or any industry. However, a post-doc is 30k for 4-6 years and then initial faculty entrance would be 60k. Plus its gonna be difficult to get a department to offer a faculty position as is.

Personally, I'm the opposite of dingy. My parents got married and had me during med school. They were always apart (like a billion miles) but working 10+ hours a day makes you not really realize it. I think debt had a tremendous affect on their lives and unplanned events and kids stopped them from fulfilling their careers.

If you do ask PIs though, most people will tell you it doesn't really matter where you do a PhD as long as you learn to do research.

🙂. I forgot to say this earlier since i havnt posted here in a bit but grats on jeff!! now you dont have to worry about WL f them 😛

In other news anyone read this thread (more importatly the 2nd page and lord jeebus post)? http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=710877&page=2

I found it kinda interesting. Granted its only one person and its anectodal blah blah, but still kinda interesting as in general i hear pre meds and M1s say who cares where you go doesnt matter, while others who are probably more in the know say somewhat opposite. I know my PI whos a residency director also told me something similar...just kinda interesting to me thats all 🙂.

and stein start sending those love letters to washu!

One thing to think about though is this argument is for the "golden ticket."

I dont think that applies to the general "is rank the most important factor" question.

To clarify, Harvard (as lordJ describes it) is the golden ticket over any school. And I would be carefull to apply this idea when weighing ranking. Not sure his argument "applies" universally. But more that if you get into Harvad that its where you should go. Which is a reasonable but seperate point.

[But still, I am probablly going to choose prestige and fit, but thats not my point]

i think most academic doctors will imply where you go to med school matters.

however, when you match, it ends up nearly insignificant. i could really ask my dad about the process, but man i want nothing to do with medicine for like the next 4 months.

my student interviewer at louisville chose the school over yale and chicago. he was chill, and military disciplined (served).

some people just don't believe in (paying for) education or other people to educate them.

I def dont think he meant universally, i just found it intersting that it really was this golden ticket while other ranked schools like penn persay didnt seem to be the same (once again well never 100% know but still). In the end top of your class is top of your class and im sure youll get in wherever if thats you at any school. But for the mid people and others...thats what interested me most. My PI told me if i got into UCLA id be insane to turn it down for uci or ucd because ucla will open up far more doors for me then the others as far as residency goes. I guess well just see who knows lol. Honestly in the end, i think we all go for the best fit and money, mixed with prestige. Everyone likes their ego to be stroked a little regardless of who you are:laugh:

how did you get her?
I called her and I told her that Tulane called and the acceptance letter I got wasn't for me. That I actually got rejected back in December.
She got quiet and then started freaking out...and I said "but it is ok, because its April Fools' Day.
She was like "you little....!"

Oh wow... lol😱:laugh::laugh:

I just woke up from an hour and a half long nap (not a continuation from the one before). I'm really disoriented and I'm not quite sure where I am. :scared: ....so I'm going to come back around midnight and things better be back to normal.

I also keep on hearing thumping noises from my ceiling. I live on the top floor of my aptartment...
