Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
it was actually just velez' jersey that was messed up -- the rest were fine

haha i bet the club house gave him grief for that. i wonder what kruk and kuip had to say about it. i love those guys.

when west Virginia won the NIT in 2007, their shirts were spelled West Virgina. same thing happened again when they won the big east this year

I am almost thought I was a thread killer for a moment there.

Not exactly. Still have a defense to do.

you will be fine, i know it. personally i thought my defense was easiest part. i knew my thesis better than anyone at my defense. you probably do too. sometimes they would ask questions fairly out of the scope of my thesis and want a concrete answer, just to challenge or throw me off. i just stuck to the specifics w/ my data and it was fine. i was nervous for really no reason. the faculty at mine actually started a whole discussion, w/ members of the audience, as if i wasn't even there! haha. in the end they said, if it provoked professionals in the field to have a meaningful discussion, it was good enough to pass. then i went out and celebrated and had the best sleep in like, 6 months.

the end is near. keep chugging!

is it a public defense where you can invite people to watch?

it'd be pretty legit if you had friends who showed up like this

 Yeah, people can come, but I don't think I can get anyone to do that.

I feel like I know the specifics of everything better than everyone else, but the meaning behind my results not so much. My PI knows everything though. He knows I'm totally freaking out and told me to just relax and stick to what I know. He said if someone asks a question I wouldn't know the answer to, he'd answer it, so hopefully no one asks something I should know but don't.

usually with good mentoring (and a publication requirement), a thesis is pretty hard to fail (at least in biomed). idk about maffff though

👍 good advice.

also my thesis was awful (well, still is i guess -- can't imagine it magically got any better by itself recently) and i survived. you'll be fine 😛

That's great to have someone backing you up. It should help you to relax to know that someone is in your corner.

Exactly - stick to what you know. No one could expect you to have a phd level understanding. People asked me interesting questions. I had someone critique my literature review because they thought I didn't include an important line of research. But in the end, I could only do so much in one thesis and answered it in that way. I appreciate the feedback, sir, and I choose to focus on this conceptualization because.... They just want to make sure that 1) you actually did the research, 2) you know why you did it, 3) you can look at the results and draw some conclusions, and 4) you can communicate all this to them.

You CAN DO IT!!

$$$$$$$$$$

Exactly.

yesterday was magic eye, today is "spot the error" !

lol yeah, saw that article yesterday.

This. Everyone will ask questions that are tangentially related to your topic and very related to whatever they do. As long as you don't step off the cliff by making up something that you aren't sure about (and they, of course, will be) you'll be fine. Good luck. 👍

I've definitely thought about the "what if I have to leave the states" thing too. It'll depend on the situation I'm in.

1)Am I a fugitive? If I were a fugitive, western countries are out of the question. I would need to pick a country that does not have extradition policies with the U.S., it's just too easy to get caught in a place like Australia. China's always an option, Russia or maybe Venezuela would do too.

2)If I'm not a fugitive, then it's likely that I'm just not welcomed or something, for example in the case of a war with China there might be some anti-sino backlash. Then I'd just go back to China, I'll probably be awarded and celebrated there 😀

Very true.😀

After taking a recent Sporcle quiz, I have discovered that:
- Spain gets fewer Wikipedia hits per day than 2 girls 1 cup
- Sweden gets fewer Wiki hits per day than ponzi scheme
there are more gems in there

Sporcle geography quizzes have gotten me through many a sleepless night. Boredom is the reason I can name all countries and capitals.

I also love the sports quizzes. I will use some of their user created science quizzes to study for med school.

If you're going into academic medicine you can make this your research topic: the efficacies of sporcle-based learning 😀

I didn't know that either. I'm almost tempted to see what it says. :barf:

socks and chapstic

Undershirts and sleep clothes!!!! (that's what I always forget)

The chapstick is a good one, though - I can't leave anywhere without mine.
