Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I have a dilemma now. I convinced myself that WashU was better than Hopkins because I thought the money situation would be better there. However, after calling the WashU money peoples and finding out that my parental contribution is indeed about what they make in a year due to their assets, it's worse.

Also, LSU-S just offered me their only full-tuition scholarship (for the first year, but the dean basically told me that I'd probably win schollies for the other 3 as well). And they really want an answer (especially since their double-drop deadline was last week).

:boom:

Thanks ksmi 🙂 I probably will.

In other news, I dragged my ass in to lab this morning after being up all night with food poisoning, only to find out that no one is there because today is a bogus MA holiday (that, by the way, the rest of HMS does not observe...). Fail

 bogus MA holiday claims another victim! i'll never forget the day i trekked all the way to city hall just to discover this thing called bunker hill day.

I understand 🙁 very tough... Can you realistically see yourself at LSU? I know you said you were interested in academia, and the opportunities to interact with faculty that could help you jump start your career will likely be better at WashU or Hopkins... Of course it's not impossible to go to LSU and make similar networking relationships, but I think in academia, school name counts for something extra for a lot of people in the field.

Oh man, this is the first day in so long that I've woken up without an alarm and it feels WONDERFUL.

Also, that animal behavior presentation that I thought I tanked? Grades are posted. A+. Awesome.

love that feeling! 'grats, sammy.

and ksmi, i agree with jla re: school name. i also find it amusing that we have similar interests, both in terms of specialty and academic medicine. go us.

I suppose Hopkins and WashU are the same in terms on financial aid. Nothing. I mean I still think I'd like WashU better in the end.

Yeah, I know. I just hate spending money! I get it from my parents (curse them for being so good with money, this is what got me into this problem). I'm planning on contacting WashU and telling them that they are my top choice but that I have two nice scholarship offers so far and my WashU financial aid package blows. Maybe I could still get a scholly out of them.

Case please give me need-based!! You cost so much!! But I want to go to your school!!

i'll just come out and say I personally don't want to see you end up at LSU-S. I think you've worked too hard to let this opportunity slip away.

but if $$$ is a huge thing to you, everyone would perfectly understand. It would just be a downer if you weren't 100% satisfied with the school of choice.

i would think WashU would be willing to work with you if you sold your case like that :xf:
:highfive: Academic endocrinologists FTW. 😛

i totally agree. i am really rooting for everyone in this thread to get IN and get monies. :xf::xf::xf::xf:

wow, that's a tough situation ksmi. i agree with everyone else though-it seems like you might regret it if you go to LSU-S. hopefully they'll give you some more $ but if not, i think wash u would make you happiest and would be worth paying some more in loans for.

good luck met :xf:

and bleargh, our committee typically doesn't send out letter packets til august either (even though they compile them and write the cover letter in june/early july). i just bugged them and they sent mine out earlier than everyone else's :meanie:

hope everyone had a great weekend! i had a fun (and enlightening) revisit at HST... it looks like the worst case scenario with them will leave me $80k more in debt than going to duke. *sigh*

That's where you want to be, I know it! Follow your heart and you'll realize that 80k is not much extra - plus you get to stay where you want to be and be who you want to be with.

That could work, wouldn't hurt to try. Stein bargained with UMich and it worked out.

:xf: Do you still have your OSU acceptance?

Ksmi, you know I don't think you should go to LSU-S. That would be like letting your last 4 years of work go to waste.

If you're going to stay in LA, at least go to Tulane.

dang. what a monstah.

i think this schritzo person is now a freshman... and that he is a she

i thought schriz is a gay he.

:hello: You should hang out here more.

Morning everyone. I feel sick and not very happy. 🙁

Did t rex bring your some georgian sickness?

I think going to a school like Hopkins or WashU justify their cost, especially if you're going into academia since they value the prestige more.

Don't be afraid to bargain. THEY want YOU as badly as you want them, seriously. Especially in your case ksmi... goodness, if you can't get merit aid from WashU, who can?? 😕

If e-mail doesn't get through to them, straight up call the admissions office and ask to discuss your financial aid package. You gotta push hard in this last month, make them fight for you. You can do it! :luck: I'd be pretty depressed if I knew someone like you was going to LSU with standing offers from Hopkins and WashU on the table. 🙁

That's a really tough situation... Hmmm... Perhaps, if you told WashU about your dilemma, they might offer you a scholarship.

Nice!! Good job!

Wow this thread picked up since I worked out. 👍

@ksmi: that's one ridiculously hard decision, all I can say is that no matter the money situation, make sure wherever you go, you are convinced that you will never ask "what if I went to..." or have any regrets whatsoever.

@everyone else: We need mo moneyyy!!

@ksmi, you know what I think about it!

@jta, HST is worth the money! Too bad they ended up not liking me, stupid alma mater 🙁 Although I like Duke a lot too, I think the three year curriculum is ideal for doing HHMI or Doris Duke or whatever.

i don't understand how in normal situations, everyone is so reasonable about this. but in a thread about money, when i post, "i'm considering financial aid as only one of many factors in my school choice" everyone jumps down my throat.

whatever, don't answer that. SDN is crazy.

SDN is holier than thou.

dw, what's with that guy in the mt. sinai thread saying that p&s is where fun goes to die?

that's not the impression i get at all.

people have issues man..

SDN attracts too many douche bags. I pretend to be a crazy right winger on sociopolitical forum and I fit right in. It stopped being funny real quickly.

People on here seem to really attack you when you say money isn't the only factor. Lame.

That is very lame. 🙁 Why go to a cheap school you hate (where you will be miserable and quite possibly underperform) when you can go to a more expensive school that you love to death (and will bring out your true potential)?

premad is a woman. met her at harvard revisit. cool girl. she did her post-bac at columbia (mentions that in the thread).

So that means I should go to Case, right?

i ranked all the schools interviewed at before acceptances let alone financial aid. I dont let financial aid come into my decision. did the same for undergrad. i've been lucky enough that my top choices have been more or less equal (undergrad and med school).

the pursuit of happyness > money

new pointless task on SDN: derail the d-bag magnet that is "the drug thread"

Douchebags that are aware of their douchebaggishness are cool with me. 👍

exACTly.

where were you guys when i was being beaten to a pulp by some bitter med students and residents (and flip, who is prematurely bitter)?

self actualization is powerful.

agreed 👍
