Some schools (most?) require you to carry long-term disability insurance. Many residents hold similar policies. Not sure about attendings.

wouldn't the slowness of those 3 years be somewhat dependent on the labs you work in and how much you like research, though?

WOW, i didn't even read see that. wtf, our campus (and nyc) in general is so immune to these stories that I guess we just glance over it. terrible. RIP
 
wow that was my 2nd to last year


unfortunately that was a really common year for people passing away on our campus

do you interact with the directors a lot in mstps? or is it mostly the faculty you'd choose to work with

it would be the PI of course. but some PIs cling to grad students, the directors are great for helping you with writing extramural grants and getting you out on time so you dont stay there for 10 years (which, seems to happen a lot)

It's confusing because http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_calendar (and http://www.jewfaq.org/calendar.htm) says that adar is the 12th (and presumably last), but I guess since the Jewish New Year starts in the 7th month, that would make elul the last month?

Anyway, I do a lot of crosswords and I see adar pop up every now and then, but I don't think I've ever seen elul. So maybe some crossword makers are just confused in their wording

Hmm...that's not what the internet tells me. Complicated calendar 😕

Rosh Hashanah is in Tishri, which is the seventh month of the year, so Elul is the last month in a sense. At the same time, the calendar has twelve months, and the twelfth month is Adar.

actually now that i've done some searching, i guess elul pops up in crosswords every now and then, too. but adar has some good letters that come in handy from a crossword construction viewpoint (the same reason that alar [wings] and aden [port city yemen] are popular)

i guess my question is why are they numbered 1 to 12 if the last month is #6? 😕

in olden times i think they used a festival calendar, in which case nisan (i think) would be the first month. but in modern hebrew, rosh hashannah marks the changing of the year (from 5769 --> 5770, for example). rosh hashannah is tishrei 1-2, so tishrei is considered the first month. unless you and/or the crossword puzzle are existing in biblical times, elul is the last month of the year.

yup, under the letters. but they're not commonly written in books/signs/etc... you kind of just have to know.

unless you're trying to make a joke about the pronunciation of hebrew words? in which case i think you've never heard hebrew spoken.

Discharge/Cancellation

It's possible to have your student loan debt discharged (canceled) or reduced, but only under certain specific circumstances:

  • Your school closed before you could complete your program.

When is New Year’s day?

That depends. Jews have several different days to choose from. The most important are:
1 Tishri: Rosh HaShanah. This day is a celebration of the creation of the world and marks the start of a new calendar year. This will be the day we shall base our calculations on in the following sections.
1 Nisan: New Year for Kings. This is also the start of the religious year. Nisan is considered the first month, although it occurs 6 or 7 months after the start of the calendar year.

So you can’t print an Islamic calendar in advance?

Not a reliable one. However, calendars are printed for planning purposes, but such calendars are based on estimates of the visibility of the lunar crescent, and the actual month may start a day earlier or later than predicted in the printed calendar.

and i can confirm that elul is the 12th month, well, according to ny times crossword. fits in with another horizontal word. nicely done dee dubs.

yeah, i understand your point. my thought was just that "adar" fits into crosswords a lot cleaner than a word like elul would (although now that i think about it, elal is pretty common in crosswords, too...), and it's not really beyond a crossword constructor to refer to the biblical calendar as opposed to the current one

so basically take home point: if you see a 4 letter jewish/hebrew month on a crossword puzzle, it's elul or adar and you need a check from another clue to figure out which one for sure
 
This summer is going to be incredibly hot. Hopefully not like the heat wave in 2007 when it was 120 heat index for like two weeks.

I did get a 90 on my Evolution test, so I don't have to take the final. That's two As today when I hadn't gotten any all semester. :laugh:

okay, but here's the real take home point: if you asked a group of jews/people who know stuff about judaism what the last month is, they'd say elul. the only people annoying enough to "send letters stating that [adar] is the twelfth month" are crossword-obsessed crazies who like to nitpick and be persnickety about esoteric details that no one else cares about. elul is the last month. end of story. believe me.

yeah, the thing is i wasn't ever questioning your knowledge of judaism. that would be silly.

i was approaching it from a crossword maker's viewpoint.

i love crosswords (have an app on my ipod touch that i used on the way to work almost every day!) and have also seen adar come up quite often. but i've never seen it referred to as the last month. just as "a hebrew month" or the month in which purim occurs.
