Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
man, should we get some type insurance? what if we suffer an injury or illness in the 4th year and cant practice medicine anymore? well be tens of thousands of dollars in debt with no means to pay for it!

Some schools (most?) require you to carry long-term disability insurance. Many residents hold similar policies. Not sure about attendings.

disability insurance is HIGHLY recommended.
I just posted this in the "Who gets sued more" thread. Separate finances. Disability insurance. Asset protection. these things are a must. 👍

Hey Brook, did you know Tumi McCallum, I just read about her.....incredibly sad. 👎

i have seriously not been sleeping the last 4 days (well i have)

its basically 250k one way + interest and otherway, I could pocket 100+ grand in cash in a difference of 3-4 years, have a more impressive resume

at the same time, 3-5 y's in the lab goes extremely slow compared to just getting up and studying for class
wouldn't the slowness of those 3 years be somewhat dependent on the labs you work in and how much you like research, though?

Those are also 3-5 years of earning potential gone.
true story. i think the crucial bit that a lot of people don't consider is that you're specifically losing this earning potential at the end of your career, where you're most likely making the most money

WOW, i didn't even read see that. wtf, our campus (and nyc) in general is so immune to these stories that I guess we just glance over it. terrible. RIP

wow that was my 2nd to last year

unfortunately that was a really common year for people passing away on our campus

do you interact with the directors a lot in mstps? or is it mostly the faculty you'd choose to work with

then again if you're just looking for an excuse to turn it down...well then there it is 😛

it would be the PI of course. but some PIs cling to grad students, the directors are great for helping you with writing extramural grants and getting you out on time so you dont stay there for 10 years (which, seems to happen a lot)

dude. 10 years. you'd be graduating with people who are currently sophomores...in high school

JJ...you just locked the 2009-2010 AMCAS questions thread. Instead of giving the link for the 2010-2011 thread, you posted a YouTube url.
JJ goes rogue!

...or it's just a placeholder link while he makes a new thread

in all honesty i think ppl that did 10 years had some kind of a medical problem though. had to.

I'm sorry bleargh. you're right. you're always right. you know everything....sorta like billups being better than duncan. you're the smartest SDN poster ever. we should all bow down to you.
yea that's exactly what i said. pfft.

wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong

it's elul. hope you see this before you ruin your crossword 😛
It's confusing because http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_calendar (and http://www.jewfaq.org/calendar.htm) says that adar is the 12th (and presumably last), but I guess since the Jewish New Year starts in the 7th month, that would make elul the last month?

Anyway, I do a lot of crosswords and I see adar pop up every now and then, but I don't think I've ever seen elul. So maybe some crossword makers are just confused in their wording

yes. el al (two words) is an israeli airline. it means "to the sky"
elul (one word, different vowel in it) is the last month of the hebrew calendar

whoa, there are vowels in hebrew? 😀

Hmm...that's not what the internet tells me. Complicated calendar 😕

Rosh Hashanah is in Tishri, which is the seventh month of the year, so Elul is the last month in a sense. At the same time, the calendar has twelve months, and the twelfth month is Adar.

is Y a vowel?

edit: not a real q, just a tetragrammaton reference in response to dingy...

actually now that i've done some searching, i guess elul pops up in crosswords every now and then, too. but adar has some good letters that come in handy from a crossword construction viewpoint (the same reason that alar [wings] and aden [port city yemen] are popular)

i guess my question is why are they numbered 1 to 12 if the last month is #6? 😕

dee speaks the hebrew?

כן, אני מדברת עברית, אבל אני לא שוטפת

in olden times i think they used a festival calendar, in which case nisan (i think) would be the first month. but in modern hebrew, rosh hashannah marks the changing of the year (from 5769 --> 5770, for example). rosh hashannah is tishrei 1-2, so tishrei is considered the first month. unless you and/or the crossword puzzle are existing in biblical times, elul is the last month of the year.

whoa, there are vowels in hebrew? 😀

yup, under the letters. but they're not commonly written in books/signs/etc... you kind of just have to know.

unless you're trying to make a joke about the pronunciation of hebrew words? in which case i think you've never heard hebrew spoken.

Discharge/Cancellation

It's possible to have your student loan debt discharged (canceled) or reduced, but only under certain specific circumstances:

  • You die or become totally and permanently disabled.
  • Your school closed before you could complete your program.
  • For FFELSM and Direct Stafford Loans only: Your school owes your lender a refund, forged your signature on a promissory note, or certified your loan even though you didn't have the ability to benefit from the coursework.
  • You work in certain designated public school service professions (including teaching in a low-income school).
  • You file for bankruptcy. (This cancellation is rare and occurs only if a bankruptcy court rules that repayment would cause undue hardship.)

One of the few good things about the federal loan program.

When is New Year’s day?

That depends. Jews have several different days to choose from. The most important are:
1 Tishri: Rosh HaShanah. This day is a celebration of the creation of the world and marks the start of a new calendar year. This will be the day we shall base our calculations on in the following sections.
1 Nisan: New Year for Kings. This is also the start of the religious year. Nisan is considered the first month, although it occurs 6 or 7 months after the start of the calendar year.

I'm not sure if reading this site helps or hurts my brain: http://www.webexhibits.org/calendars/calendar.html

So you can’t print an Islamic calendar in advance?

Not a reliable one. However, calendars are printed for planning purposes, but such calendars are based on estimates of the visibility of the lunar crescent, and the actual month may start a day earlier or later than predicted in the printed calendar.

I was all like 😕:shrug::bang::eyebrow::shrug::whoa:

ahhh. thanks for 14 across!

כן, אני מדברת עברית, אבל אני לא שוטפת

😱 wow. how do you make your computer type hebrew. cool.

and i can confirm that elul is the 12th month, well, according to ny times crossword. fits in with another horizontal word. nicely done dee dubs.

unless you and/or the crossword puzzle are existing in biblical times, elul is the last month of the year.
yeah, i understand your point. my thought was just that "adar" fits into crosswords a lot cleaner than a word like elul would (although now that i think about it, elal is pretty common in crosswords, too...), and it's not really beyond a crossword constructor to refer to the biblical calendar as opposed to the current one

quote i found from some crossword guy:
"the one that gives transliterators the least trouble is a crossword puzzle favorite--ADAR. But whenever I define it as 'the sixth month of the Jewish year,' someone is bound to send me a letter stating that it's the twelfth month. The problem is that Adar is No. 6 in the civil year, wherera s it's No. 12 in the ecclesiastical year."

so basically take home point: if you see a 4 letter jewish/hebrew month on a crossword puzzle, it's elul or adar and you need a check from another clue to figure out which one for sure

This summer is going to be incredibly hot. Hopefully not like the heat wave in 2007 when it was 120 heat index for like two weeks.

I did get a 90 on my Evolution test, so I don't have to take the final. That's two As today when I hadn't gotten any all semester.

and i would just like to say that i am happy a crossword puzzle could bring us together in a happy discussion about the jewish calender.

haha, go figure that my throwaway comments are more helpful than my reasoned out answers 😛

is there where ddubs gets to say she told us so? lol

well for future reference, adar is another popular hebrew month in crossword puzzles 😛

i have a font that i got from a roommate in college. takes me like 5 min to type a sentence, though

okay, but here's the real take home point: if you asked a group of jews/people who know stuff about judaism what the last month is, they'd say elul. the only people annoying enough to "send letters stating that [adar] is the twelfth month" are crossword-obsessed crazies who like to nitpick and be persnickety about esoteric details that no one else cares about. elul is the last month. end of story. believe me.

yeah, the thing is i wasn't ever questioning your knowledge of judaism. that would be silly.

i was approaching it from a crossword maker's viewpoint.

i love crosswords (have an app on my ipod touch that i used on the way to work almost every day!) and have also seen adar come up quite often. but i've never seen it referred to as the last month. just as "a hebrew month" or the month in which purim occurs.

fair enough.
