Being ~only one year removed from this process, I recommend you save yourself lots of headaches and talk your SO into a destination wedding. You can't lose, the people who are most important will be there, you're on a freaking tropical island (probably), the wedding planning is done and everyone else will send you a gift! Win!

Note that I'm a little bitter because my wife and I fought with our respective mothers about every other week from engagement to nuptials.

That's so weird to me. I feel like everyone around me is getting married or is about to be.

As for the apartment, I guess I'm living in a luxury apartment this year, but it's not because I particularly want to. I would rather live in just a normal, average place. But for me, it came down to safety, and I wanted to get to know Miami a little more first before I chose a more modest location.

Luckily for us, we have the whole thing planned and set up (except for the DJ). Made sure to do it the summer before so that we have very little planning to do during the fall. It's been one crazy ass summer to say the least.

My fiancee's parents offered us a good bit of cash to elope. :laugh: (This is their 4th daughter getting married, fwiw)

I would totally be cool with that, but I'm the first one on my family's side to do this so it wouldn't be fair to them.

That's a good idea. I think I'm trying to do the same, but with less time to work with.

Hopefully my fiancee's parents can go see our prospective venue on Tuesday and lock up a date. :xf:
 
Planning the wedding with my wife was fine, hell it was even fun. It was our mom's incessant need to try to invite people beyond our budget that was a problem. They always took it so personally when we told them that their friends or whomever couldn't come. I'm not sure why, but it seems that everyone thinks they have a say in weddings.

I had a buddy who's future FIL offered him and his fiancé 10 grand to elope. He said it'd be cheaper than paying for a wedding for him and a great gift to get them started as a couple.

My fiancee is from Chicago also, and none of her friends from high school are engaged or married. It doesn't seem to bother her family that we're getting married "young" though.

Yea I know what you mean man, everybody in Miami is looking for a place in Brickell. I was gonna broaden my search a bit since that area costs a ton, but that's proving a bit more difficult than I thought 😡
 
I wonder what I can do tomorrow to be productive. I can't do anything regarding immunization records until Thursday (day before they're due) and I don't really have anything pressing to accomplish besides that.

one of the reasons i didnt go to miami. its esp tough when the actual cost of buying a condo isnt bad but the rent is way more than the mortgage, just pisses you off even more.

have you tried taking your talents to south beach?

I wish I could finish it tomorrow. That form is the reason why I took Monday, Wednesday and Thursday off this week.

My titer results (the only thing I'm waiting on) won't come back until Tues or Wed and the doctor won't be there to sign off on the whole form until Thursday, so it looks like I'm taking it down to the wire. I'll get everything signed on Thursday and drive the forms over to the office that afternoon right before I leave for Chicago.

dont worry about the immunizations too much. i think the administration is pretty laid back everywhere and people will help you out.
 
The only thing I need is my TB test/vaccine so I think I'm just gonna wait until orientation when they offer those. :shrug:

I think I'm gonna cave too, haha, for the first year anyway. I think once I know the area better by my second year, I'll move to a cheaper place. I mean, I'm visiting my parents in Jersey right now, I'm sleeping on the wooden floor, only one room has AC, and I'm fine with it, so my tolerance for low living standards is pretty high :laugh:

Yea man, certainly have...some apts there are actually cheaper, not sure why. There are some apts near the campus that are mad cheap, but I checked the crime rate data and it's also mad high, so I'm a lil wary of that. SoBe is a tad far from campus, so that's kind of a negative right now.
 
There's two apartment complexes here that most people live in. I avoided them just because I didn't feel like living in an all student community. I also didn't want to pay for stuff like a gym when my tuition already pays for one. The only thing I wish I had was a washer/dryer in my apartment, but that's my only gripe with my current apartment.

The advantage of having spent lots of time in bad areas is that everywhere I looked to live or go to hang out here is a "good area" by comparison.:laugh: I did however go with a place that has outside doors and deadbolts on the inside doors since I'm gone a lot.

the commute from south beach is a bitch. i rented a car when i was down there and the traffic is annoying for such a short distance. the good thing is that the drive is great as far as the view goes and you'll be surrounded by some nice cars (idk how thats a good thing, but its not terrible)

also, some places in south beach are kinda crappy. apartments totally give off a different feel when you visit them though (good/bad)

I have a feeling that I'll spend more time trying to find parking then getting to school from my apt. It shouldn't take me longer than 10 minutes if this summer is any indication.
 
i dont understand how this city has good areas and bad ones. people bike here all the time. if you don't have to take off your tires when you are going back home/to work when you lock your bike outside, you are in a pretty safe ass city. if you can bike 40 minutes to work everyday, taking the same damn path, without getting pushed/raped/robbed/murdered on the way, you are living in a pretty safe city. if you send out a campus warning saying a big guy in his late 20s tried to assault 3 different women during 3 different times this month, and failed all 3 times, you are living in a city with some weak ass criminals.

back at penn, my friend got mugged twice in a walk back to campus (yea, twice within 6 blocks) and some dude raped two women at one time, in public, on the campus. so don't give me this bad neighborhood bit, random midwestern state.

That stinks. I'm not even going to worry about parking. I'm totally utilizing the Metrorail in Miami.

And yea - who ISN'T a huge fan of L&O? Although, I'm really an SVU fan - I just watch L&O:regular whenever it's on TV and i've got it on. I just wish netflix was faster at putting up SVU episodes online

yea. parking is terrible here on campus. i dont even know how, but its like worse than philly. at least you could park on the street in philly via parallel park. people can't even parallel park here. apparently, they take their road test for their license in a closed circuit track. thats not real driving.

this campus stretches for 8 miles and has like 60,000 students. how the **** do you not have a single street parking spot. how is it that the metered parking (very limited) charges 25 cents for 12 minutes. its ****ing minnesota.


i understand that you want to discourage drivers for eco-friendly reasons and what not and traffic but improve your public transpo system!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! build some ****ing subways

yea didn't think much of the commute there. if all else fails, i'm just gonna find some random guy looking for a roommate on craigslist, there's like a billion postings on there a day.

Well, it's not really a bad thing. I actually have no idea how long parking will take. From talks with students, it shouldn't take very long. It just won't take me very long to get to school, which is nice.

Oh well, I grew up in NYC. Here's hoping I got some good training... As much of a double standard as it is - I feel so much worse for the women - it seems like they are much bigger targets than men...

I'm trying to live w/ non med students to get more diversity @ my apt 👍 That way we don't talk about medicine all the time
 
also, open letter to craigslist, cuz like everyone reads this forum

if you are going to show an apartment, at least clean that **** up a little bit, especially if its vacant or you own it. i just saw an apartment with a bath tub that was full of hair. like covered in dried nasty ass hair. flies all over the floor. if they cleaned it up it would have had potential and been a great deal. but no one wants to rent a place seeing stupid **** like that

2. if you are going to advertise for a place/subplease/roommate and are going to post pics, i would prefer to see pics of the apartment, not of the roommates face/not a Christmas photo/not a picture of your stupid ass dog named Steve, even though the dog is a girl as you thoroughly describe in your craigslist post.
