Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
u've spent too much time in louisiana dude!

speaking of which, i'm gonna be moving down to baton rouge this weekend 😀

How long are you going to be there? I'll have nothing but time when I come back from Chicago and I need to go up there to finalize moving out of the apartment in BR, so we could hang out if you're there for a little while.

cept for the people mostly doing LASIK...

They tend to have a low starting salary and a decent income once established, but nothing amazing. Apparently they just raked in the cash in the 80's and 90's but it's not like that anymore. The hours are still sweet though. They did get a large bump from CMS this past year though (11% if I recall, phased in over several years), so maybe they'll regain some ground.

Note the cataract rate change.

hey everyone!
Happy belated birthday cougar! Funny that our birthdays are so close....I turn 23 in 5 days 🙂....oooooold!

Double happy belated birthday!!

...it seems I turn 23 tomorrow. 😱

Happy Birthdaysssss!

well thats nice that miami sent a survery to people who withdrew after acceptance.

Same happend to me. Got something from Tulane, Loyola, and somewhere else if I'm not mistaken.

uw madison did the same for me....i kinda wish i chose to matriculate there but o well.

I got a survey from VCU when I withdrew. I wonder how many people mark down "financial reasons" for withdrawal surveys. Probably a lot.

furniture is mad expensive

Yeah, I'm glad all I bought was a papasan chair and a coffee table. Only set me back about $275 and my roommate spent like $800 on 2 sofas.

:hello: back home from NYC... for a whole day. Heading back again Friday. 😀

Happy birthday and belated birthday to the people I missed over the last few days!

If you read any of the 2009-10 school specific threads right now, it's pretty sad. The only conversations are about people's hopeless waitlist chances. It's depressing, I wouldn't recommend it.

Yea tell me about it. I'm still subscribed to the Cornell thread because I"m still WL there (not that I'd go if I got in...) - it is sad 🙁

OH goodness...look at what the bf showed me...

http://www.pickuplinesgalore.com/biochem.html

😆 awesome & epic

Is it bad that the paranoid part of me thinks that now adcoms can recognize who I am by birthdate?😉

🙄 yes

I turned in all my forms and stuff to LSU, so I am a lot less stressed. Hopefully everything was correct.

Only 2 days of work left when I get back from my trip. I'm so ready.

So, I can now be grateful that my mom is constantly in a state of redecorating... she's giving me a nice ottoman, some bookshelves, and a great mirror that she doesn't really want anymore.

TO DO:

Get undergrad loans deferred...
Obtain copy of immunization records...

That has been my to do list for a while now. XD

Undergrad loans... ouch.

I did get a head start on the whole med school debt thing about a month early, though.

Yeah ouch, but hey I think it was worth it. I probably could've gotten away debt free if I'd lived at home...but I wouldn't have had the same experience....

Your unsubsidized undergraduate loan debt will increase roughly 28.5% while you are in medical school.

:barf:

Oh thanks for reminding me.... 😳

:barf:

This is why I'm kinda happy I got to work for ~5 years - I got to pay off my undergrad loans! Then again - for penn's financial aid, they were like "oh you have 0 debt - ok you get no hardship scholarships - kthnksbye"
😡

Damned if you do, damned if you don't situation

I'm sure you're glad you didn't live at home.

Of COURSE. Besides all the obvious reasons, It would have involved being in a cramped trailer for almost 2 years as our house was being repaired post Katrina.

Random Awkwardness: The thumbnails on my Chrome screen haven't updated in a while, so on my Facebook tab there's a bunch of picture of metallica & fiance from his engagement status update. XD

Also applying and keeping the admissions committee uptodate on your scores.

Edit: I love that his sig reads as linking to the SDN blog, but hovering over it shows that it goes to a completely different website.

wonder if he posted on the wrong thread by mistake... or is just randomly posting he gets more clicks or something? 😕

I got off the waitlist at WashU and will be attending WashU. My family keeps saying things like "I'll be glad if you can graduate. Everyone there will be smarter than you." Their reasoning is that because I was waitlisted, I'm not really smart enough to go to this school, and that I will struggle through med school there. Is such argument justified at all?

No, that's just dumb.

It's WashU, if you got in then you can make it through any med school in the country. Tell them to shove it.

er that's stupid. I was wait listed @ Cornell Engineering for undergrad, got off the waitlist, and was on the dean's honor roll for 3 years straight. So... yea 🙂 they won't let you in if they don't think you can cut it. Remember - it makes the school look bad if you don't do well; so they are very careful who they pick.

Besides, I see this as a good reason for you to go to Wash U, go AoA and rub it in their faces :meanie:

Psh. Everyone at WashU is awesome. Including you. 😀

btw your status is medical student!? 😱
:nono:

Tsk tsk. Fix it or I can't be your friend at school. 😛

Completely ridiculous. They wouldn't have put you on the waitlist in the first place (or even interviewed you) if they didn't think you could handle the school academically.

I doubt that anyone could be presented with a list of 120 entering students (and their stats, ECs, etc) and accurately predict which ones would be at the top of the class -- and on top of that, that all of those top of the class students would be ones that were admitted "directly" instead of off the waitlist.

Yeah... Since my app cycle is over and I'm starting med school in <1 month, I changed my status to med student. I'm more med student than pre-med.

Well yeah, we all feel that way. But that's just not how it's done around here.

God forbid any med students see you with that; they go crazy.

Blob, where did you end up deciding? Or are you anonymous?

We all feel that way, but our tradition is we wait till we officially start the program (i.e. orientation or classes - there's even a debate about that...)

For example: a certain person's already @ wash U doing research and we still don't let him/her change to med student status :meanie:

I know I'm probably alone on this, but I think it's kind of silly at this point to be so picky about the premed/med student status thing

In some ways, it actually makes more sense to actually have "Medical student" (even though, yes, it's technically inaccurate 🙄) because then when someone asks a question about applying this year, they'll know that you're probably speaking from experience when you respond, rather than just being another pre-med that's speculating with them.

I guess I just don't like being a stickler just for the sake of being a stickler
ninja say what

(for those who watched the vid i posted..)
lol

I agree almost 100%, it's just not the way things are done on SDN because med student douchebags attack you for "lying" or whatever their infinite knowledge perceives.

eh I do it not for being a stickler, but because it's a right of passage kinda thing. Come that special day, it'll be awesome to throw the switch and be a "medical student" 😀

Also - for letting people know you are done w/ the year - that's what your signature's for! :meanie:

And it's totally cool if that's you're reasoning and why you won't change it for another month or so, but when you tell other people that they can't change theirs, I consider that being a stickler.

hmm good point and true enough. Eh the whole thing's more of a suggestion with some added peer pressure anyway. I don't have super internet powers to police peoples' status on SDN

... or do I!? :ninja:

If we accept the premise that SDN is an online community, then, as members of the community, we have a responsibility to represent ourselves appropriately. Since I am not yet a medical student, I don't represent myself as one. A fourth year med student isn't a resident; a president-elect isn't a president; a dying person isn't dead; etc. I'm sure a few scenarios exist that are more complicated (for example, if a monkey was transforming into a bear, there would be a period of time where it was both monkey and bear), but this isn't one of those scenarios.

haha, I know. My point was just that it's not a big deal, there are merits to both sides, and people should feel free to do whatever they want

I was alluding to the same thing - but bloby's got a point. That's still our perception so we stick to it; doesn't mean others have to or should. We can expect them to and wag our fingers at them since that's what communities do :meanie: but that's about it eh?

Dude it's SDN. Everything's a big deal. Even high school achievements - so much so that there's a flame war every year as to if they should be listed on AMCAS 🤣

ahhh I 😍 SDN
