Class of 2015... How ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sad confession time: I kinda hate clin path. At least the class.

If all it was were looking at slides, I would adore it. But regenerative vs degenerative left shift with neutrophilia and normocitic, normochromic, blah blah blah whatever horses are weird and cows look like they're gonna die when they aren't.

I have an exam tomorrow and I don't think it's gonna go that well.

I like the idea of it but it never comes together for me.

It seems like exactly the sort of class you would love, nyan!

Apparently my whole class had a crap ton of trouble on the parasit exam and I did really well on it - so I just have this different way of absorbing material...

I did love clin path, actually. Ours was presented in a way that worked so well for me, I didn't have to really "study" more than a handful of hours throughout the entire course, and the only exam was cumulative over the whole (quarter and a half) course, and I did very well. We had one hour of lecture per week (which I stopped going to after the second one) and then 2 kind of case based 'lab/discussion' sections per week on the same topic as the lecture. Usually I tended to work through the first section of the week using the text and the second section without it, so I learned it well enough. And it all fit together so well.

I LOVE clin path. It's a lot of material, but it's so useful. (Yes, we have clin path first year...)

Tomorrow I will die. I couldn't sleep the last few nights so then I was tired and couldn't focus. I finally drugged myself with a mix, that I didn't check on the safety of until this morning when I woke up, to induce a sleep-like state. Now I don't know anything and am still tired. I'm about to sit down with my stuff and try to study but I have a feeling there will be some crying today and some failure tomorrow. eff

We don't have clin path yet (next semester maybe?) but I've been to some of the clin path rounds put on by the pathology club and I do enjoy it. Maybe when it's an actual class and not just fun case studies I'll change my mind, though.

After our pharm midterm #1, tutorial groups switched so instead of having to wait an extra hour after lunch and be the last class on Tuesdays, I get to be done at lunch 😀

Exam didn't go well. It's embarrassing to have my worst grade this year in a class everyone else thinks is easy and fun. (I mean my classmates, not you guys.)

I just never really got it. I got behind in the class and that was it, never caught up.

Now there is like another month before the next exam, so lots of time to get back on my feet. And I will be taking all the point opportunities a lot more seriously now too.

And now, I have two quizzes tomorrow - one for 10 points and one for 40. The Larger one is over nine lectures of bacT, which I haven't started studying for... guess I'd better get on that...

Tomorrow, sushi! I'm worn out.

Awww, redhead, I'm glad someone thought of me!

We have finals next week... And I just don't wanna!!! Wanna go outside and do fun things!! Waaaahhh. Vet school makes me so whiny. 🙁

Round 1 of exams over.
:highfive::clap::soexcited:

Hoping I can get my crap together to not have such a yardsale for round 2 (probably not, but hope springs eternal😀)

We have a whole week and a half. What could go wrong? 😎

Test Friday, finals next week, and I'm going shopping today. I think that about justifies it...

I'm trying to figure out what size coveralls I need. Any suggestions on how to tell?

I got most of my exam grades back (still missing neuropharm, but that went swell so I'm not worried) from our first round of midterms, and all I gotta say is: I need to step my damn game up.

Second year is very time consuming, but I'm apparently much better at this material than I was at first year's material. I like feeling like it wasn't an accident that I got accepted.

So that path exam that was supposed to be at 6:30 this morning got pushed back to 7:30 and we found out earlier this week, so that was good. We are there at 7:30 waiting to get this silly test over with. 7:30 rolls by... 7:40 is gone... Finally we get the news that they have been trying to fix it, but the program was down all over campus so there was just no way for us to take it then. So they rescheduled it for 1 this afternoon or 4 on Monday if we couldn't make that. I ended up doing just fine, and although this was worth less than the first two tests, I've pulled my grade out of the unhappy zone so I'm okay with vet school again. Just have to keep it up on the final next Friday.

Now on to sleep so I can get up bright and early to study for virology on Monday...

Horse got cast on Wednesday night and it's been rotating ice and standing wraps around the clock since then. I'm too freaking worried about the damage to his fetlock to care about studying and can't get any answers until the inflammation is down so we can ultrasound it. (xrays were clean - thank goodness!). We have a ginormous renal phsyiology exam on Monday and I am incredibly behind in studying. I have reread the same summary about 15 times and still have no idea what the words actually say. This is really not good. I'm so overwhelmed that I don't even want to start. 🙁 Someone please restart my brain!!!!!!!!

Can I fast forward through the rest of October? Public health midterm tomorrow, virology (ACK!) and bacteriology midterms next week, diagnostic imaging final and systemic pathology midterm the week after that. 🙁

Path final tomorrow and parasit on Friday. Started and finished season two of The Walking Dead this week and have read about 100 pages of World War Z, even with it being finals week. I'm surprised I haven't had zombie nightmares yet (I have overreacted to someone seemingly appearing out of nowhere behind me, and I have had irrational thoughts that a zombie is in my closet waiting for me lol). Getting all of that accomplished and maintaining grades has been possible so far, so let's hope these last two finals go just as well.

Good luck scbf!

Decided to try a new way of studying with virology midterm looming next Tuesday- typing up a study guide. Could either be a genius idea or a terrible one, but I'm pretty sure that my usual methods will probably not get me where I need to be in that class. Here goes nothing :xf:

Thanks, redhead! Hope that study guide is useful! I had to start making charts for that class, even if they were huge, just to see everything lined up in a way where my brain could visualize it for tests.

So, about pathology... I did not realize that she is generous and straight up tells us that she rounds up if you are within 0.5 percent of the next grade. I might have gotten very upset and cussed loudly in my garage before I realized this (I was one test point away from my goal grade in that class). I would have been fine if I had just gotten the lower grade; wouldn't have been the end of the world and I probably wouldn't have been so upset if I weren't so close to the next grade up. Basically, I overreacted and I hate that I did.

Parasit is today. We did not learn about spider-dads and how to deal with girlfriends though. Wish we had!

Today I survived a surgical skills lab with an equine surgeon of some noteriety. Got yelled at fewer than ten times and was only called "incompetent" twice. Winning! 😀

(Fortunately, the only "patient" at stake was a stuffed animal.)

I only got a mild reprimand. Maybe he mellowed by the time I was up on the draping table ... it was already 4:10 and he probably needed to go home.

Holy crap! Had gen path final today. Midterm was manageable, this test was....a butt rape. I was pretty sure I failed it, although apparently I did well enough to pass the class so whatevs.

Last week was finals week, so this weekend I went to the St. Louis Canine Games with a few classmates. You buy tickets for your dog to try random events (canine Einstein, agility, frisbee catching, cart pulling, lure coursing, etc.). It was my first time going and I want to go back so badly next year and take my dog but it is probably the same day as white coat. Oh well.

Because this is the first week of the new block, there are about 10 or so different events on the schedule, which means lots of free meals! And there are no tests until week 3, so that is a bonus!!

Feeling your pain, Bearby. Congrats on passing. 🙂

I just finished an at-home, online, closed-book pharm mid-term.

1) I hate those tests. I always feel like all the gunners are going to cheat because to them the grade is more valuable than anything, which just makes the rest of us look bad. I know, I know, don't compare ... sigh. Anyway.

2) I'm pretty sure I must be attending a different class than the one this exam was supposed to be testing. Pretty much every other question had me blinking and doing a mental "Have I ever even HEARD of that drug/mechanism/whatever?"

ugh i do not know why professors do that. so few people are actually honest, and those of us who are tend to suffer. poo.

my CVS pharm exam went something like this last week: hmm idk that one. or that one. or this one. or this one. well crap. good thing the 1st 13 (of 30) were on ocular and respiratory pharm by another professor or i woulda just totally bombed that 🙄 ohhhh pharm

Making it even more of a mind f', there were 32 T/F scattered around the test. I went back at the end and counted, and I answered 27 of them 'T'. Pretty sure I got most of those right, but it was awfully hard to hit 'Submit' with that lopsided ratio.

oh man thats cruel!! i hate T/F. unless i flat out know the answer, i can usually reason myself for both sides. killer!

one of our medicine professors is supposedly very fond of T/F and gave a 50 question T/F test last year. he used to tease us (in another lower level class) that he's always wanted to make one version all T except 1 and the other all F except for 1. :scared:

Lol that would be so cruel. I had an engineering professor give us a 50 question T/F test once, but they were all the same version. He straight up told us that it would be lopsided though (like 80% of them were true and he told us that beforehand). He was a very generous guy!

Got up in the dark, drove to school in the dark, took virology midterm before dawn. I feel like that belongs on some kind of twisted Vet School Bucket list.

Now, on to bacT, which I have not touched, for the exam on Thursday :help:

Just finished listening to a classmate's audio for the diagnostic imaging class I missed and it made me realized how much I wish we had podcasts like other schools do.

It annoys me that our school won't (can't, they claim) require lecture capture for every single class. (It's at professor discretion.)

I'm tired of hearing from professors about people not showing up (great - give them a reason to come) or their lecture material being stolen and put online (really? c'mon). Both those have the ring of 'excuse' instead of solid rational thinking.

*grumble*

we don't have it period. the medical school has "sonic foundry" which is an audio/video program, but the SVM professors are vehemently against its use on our side. we're allowed to audio record at least. the same crap about attendance and copyright is tossed around here as well. it think the most irritating part though is that the school ADVERTISES that SVM has this wonderful program that videos all lectures when indeed they actually dont. don't lie, its obnoxious and reflects poorly. hmph. i feel your pain!

Wow. Flat out lying about it isn't cool.

Last year we convinced one of our profs to try it, even though he was vehemently opposed based on the "lower attendance" argument.

By the end of semester he conceded that attendance hadn't worsened, and test scores were up. I had to give him kudos for being willing to take a chance and then stand up and say "I guess I was wrong." I wish more profs had that kind of intellectual courage.

Sounds like your pain sucks more than mine. At least half our profs go for lecture capture.

Most of them first year used the software to record their lectures and post online. The first set of classes this year, none of them used it during class, but one professor recorded her lectures outside of class so they were shorter than an average class time (fantastic if you just needed to review something!). This block, a couple of people are trying to record theirs but we have been having issues with it recording audio.

We do have a mandatory lecture policy, but I have been known to skip lectures if I am supremely annoyed with the lecturer or topic that day...

Good job on Virology, guys! 🙂
