If I remember correctly, they took an empty fluids bag, filled it with water that was dyed red, and hooked up the normal line that would go to the patient (this line was capped at the end and became the patient's vein). They used pvc pipe as the "leg" and wrapped it in vetwrap with the IV line underneath, so this patient didn't have hair, but it still had to be held off. We pretended to wipe the area with alcohol, had another student hold off, and set the catheter. If your buddy was mean, they wiggled the leg while it was your turn 😛

We had 3 of these set up for our class of 120, and I didn't hear any complaints from the last lab, so I assume they held up pretty well.

thats genius! we used to do a catheter wet lab with student pets, but we're having real difficulties getting that approved these days. what a neat alternative!

The first hospital I worked at had a similar set up! Worked very well. We also had a broom that had an IV line wrapped around it with various depths of vet wrap to practice doing blood draws... Bottom of the handle was a thin layer of vet wrap for an awesome vein type dog, the other end was heavily wrapped for more of a " padded " type dog lol
 
Final #5 in an hour. Then I'm coming home and taking a nap before going back to studying for systemic pathology. Just three more left after today. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming...

For our lab we had "wood dowels" (looked like the handle part of a hammer) with IV tubing down the length of it. I think adding vet wrap on top is a great idea once you get the feel of how deep to go and hand positioning. We got to practice on our teaching beagles for one lab second semester first year, but only a certain number of pokes per dog (and we only have 60 people!)

At the clinic I learned at, it was just trial and error, although we limited ourselves to two pokes for the noobs. I think it's the best way to learn 🙂
 
One of the clinics that I worked at one of the vet techs made an arm using a rolled up towel with vet wrap.. first a thin layer of vet wrap for those first learning, then a thicker layer, then she would make the "vein" do weird things, like what you would find on a basset hound or dachshund or other short-legged dog.

I'm aware of the day. 😛 For reasons unknown to us, we often have Saturday finals. We had one last week too. I understand why last week's surgery final was on a Saturday, it helps the spacing (more or less 1 day off between exams). I'm not sure why we wrote today instead of yesterday though.

that's kind of yucky. I mean, having days off is nice in between exams, but still, strange.
 
Wow, I haven't posted in this thread in a while.
We still have 2 very full weeks of class left (including a final), and then 4 finals spaced out over the following 2 weeks. I mean, I'm glad that they are always pretty good at spacing out exams...but I swear that Tufts has the longest semesters compared to every other school. We also randomly have 3 papers and 4 different homework exams due in the next 2 weeks, which is kind of obnoxious because we very rarely have homework/online quiz things to do, let alone papers. It's throwing everyone off because it suddenly requires paying attention to deadlines.

But then I'm going to be on 3 different continents this summer, and will be home for a grand total of about 20 days...so that's exciting, albeit a bit more stressful than I was originally anticipating.

how long is your semester? ours are 17 weeks apiece including 1 week for midterms and 1-2 weeks for finals and no breaks
 
I wish we had spacing between our finals. We have 6 next week. I'm glad to get them done and start summer, but I would really do so much better grade wise if we had some space in there. Pretty sure my A's and B's are going to drop to B's and C's and then there's the D I need to raise to a C. At least I'm not really in danger of failing anything. I'm pretty happy about that. I just hate it when I work really hard all semester and then finals drop me a letter grade 🙁

Ok so I just counted...spring semester this year is 19 weeks (not including spring break) with the last two weeks being exams only. We also have a couple of 3 day weekends - MLK Jr day, President's day, and Patriot's Day on April 15th...although Patriot's Day was definitely not the most joyous holiday for all of us this year (luckily no one from the vet school who was at the marathon was at the finish line...)
And 3rd year, we start back up a week earlier than 1st and 2nd years, b/c they need to cram in as much as possible before clinics start in March...

Yeah, I'm somewhat thankful for how my school does it - we have a total of 18 exams this semester, generally 1 exam a week with some off weeks here and there, and then the last two weeks we have no classes but have 2 exams per week (on Mondays and Thursdays). It works well for me, because I'm bad at studying unless there's a deadline in my face, so I basically don't bother keeping up with anything on a daily basis, and instead just study one subject at a time for the couple days before an exam. A majority of our exams are on Mondays, which is nice because it gives me all day Saturday and Sunday to study. Although, the downside is that I never go anywhere outside of my office on the weekends. I'm worried for 3rd year though, because all of our exams will be on Fridays.

Anyway, I hear you though...my brain really starts to shut down while studying for the last couple of exams in a semseter. But I'm in the ever precarious "C" range in both Clin Path and Cardio...so I feel like I'm going to need to find someone with a cattle prod to shock me every time I get distracted...
 
Systemic path is tomorrow. Always my weakest grade but at least it will be out of the way. Therio on Wed, pharm/tox on Fri and we're done. I still have not lifted a finger to clean or even thought about packing yet and I was planning to leave after our exam on Friday...whoops. May leave the next morning to give myself the time to get it done, but it's so tempting to rush through it, not study and be ready to go.
 
We have two finals on Thursday (SA surgery and medicine), and two on Friday (tox and anesthesiology) this week. Then we jump into block 10 next week, leaving us 9 more weeks total until summer. Next block should be exciting though, since we finally have surgery labs and we'll learn about food animal and equine medicine/surgery.

If you leave the next day, you have all day Friday to pack, and then you can come to Iron Man with us Friday night! 😛

Coquette, I'm cramming in my packing (like everything else in my life :laugh:) so I can get the heck home. But thanks for the invite, I've heard it's good from a friend overseas!
 
Haha, I sort of figured, but thought I'd throw it out there as an invite.

Meanwhile.... *looks at stack of pharm/tox notes* the next 36 hours is going to be painful. There is way more stuff here then I can possibly learn. The professors know that it's 2.5 hours in total, right? Not 2.5 hours for pharm and 2.5 for tox? 🙄
 
I would say it will be a nice break to have >1 week to relax between finals this block and the first exams next block, but then I looked at the schedule for next block and realized that stupid companion animal has its first test next Friday (i.e. one week after our last final) which includes material presented to us last week in our surgery class. I'm just glad I'm not participating in Phi Zeta day because they have to miss one of our finals on Friday and take it Monday instead, so there is no mental break at all for them or for people who are choosing to take it on Monday just because (I don't feel as bad for them, but they have to do an assignment showing they attended Phi Zeta day, so it's not like they can just blow everything off on Friday).
 
One more final then second year is done!

I'm so excited for coating and starting clinics! iaeuhgpudfbnudifhge!! that's my excited language.
 
One final left... It's Tox and it is split into an "unlucky 13" handwritten test where we are given a picture and have to identify the plant, toxin, species affected etc., and then there is a computer portion where we are given a picture and have to answer multiple choice questions about them. They aren't as bad as they sound, but I haven't reviewed the material for the multiple choice section very well... Oh wellllll, we are almost done for the block!

Three final grades have been officially posted, we're still waiting on five more; the profs have until May 8 to have everything into the administration.

scb - That sounds horrible. Tox is bad enough (still trying to work out this morning's hand-cramp) without trying to remember what the damn plants look like.
 
Grumble.

Still ... going. Just finished cardiopulm final and turned in the take-home ecg exam.

But have an imaging final Monday and two days of clin path exams Thu/Fri. Then a full week all day of avian ... stuff. Then an exam. Then freedom.

Oh. And somewhere in there I have to do an obstetrics final. Hm.
 
Really frustrating that the earlier finals we took aren't posted but our second to last and two middles were posted at lightning speed.

But do I care? No. Because I'm lying in bed doing laundry FOR FREE and eating a chocolate bar and I got to spend the weekend with my SO (and family) 😀

Yup.

Yesterday was the first day of the new block. I think I'm going to like our classes for the most part, but our surgery lab timing is forcing us to eat lunch in the lecture before since it starts right at noon and goes until 4. They decided to make lab stop at 4 this year though, instead of allowing it to go until 7 or 8 at night, so at least we have it easy compared to last year's class who didn't get a proper lunch OR dinner time.

I am sort of resenting our small animal medicine class, as they have added about 5-6 lectures to the schedule in the first couple weeks of the block. So our 9-12 class days have magically turned into 8-12 or 8-2. When will they understand that my brain can't take more than 3 hours of lecture at one time? 🙁

Ugh, I can relate. This past semester, on Tuesdays, we had four hours of lecture in the morning, followed by another two or three after lunch. It was soul sucking.
 
tomorrow is our white coat ceremony! I'm super excited and nervous about starting clinics but I think it will be good. I have a feeling that I'm going to try to do the techs' jobs because it's what I'm used to.

Sucks, no? For the first 2/3rds of the semester, our 'typical' day was 7-8 hours of lecture. Soul sucking is a great way to put it. It's only been the latter third with surgery lab, radiology labs, clinical rotations, etc that we've gone back to the more typical 4-5 of so hours of lecture/day.

On Mondays I actually had class from 8-12 and 1-7 because of a 2-hr elective at the end. The elective was pretty interactive most of the time, so it wasn't truly 10 hours of lecture, but still ... by the end of Monday I was *done*.

Next week I have a single course that's packed into one week. 8-12, 1-5 all day every day of Avian Core.
 
Currently sitting in scrubs and a white coat waiting for our surgery lab orientation to start. I feel like an imposter because our white coat ceremony isn't until October.
 
anesthesia anesthesia, get into my brain and stay there for 24 more hours!!!

anesthesia, pathology II, exotics and neurology are all that stand between me and the end of this year! 😱

Soooooo close to being done.

Thu and Fri was our two-day Clin Path final (that was about the most stressful exam I've dealt with so far in school .... one day multiple-choice, one day essay, and I felt utterly unprepared for it). Thu also was my son's oral surgery to correct a handful of abnormalities (some supernumerary teeth, some retained deciduous), so that didn't play well with Clin Path since I wanted to be present for him. Knocked off a take-home obstetrics final today.

Just one week of avian core with its final, plus a surgery lab final tomorrow. Summer can't come soon 'nuff.
