i have 6 weeks worth of externships scheduled from Dec 1- Jan 11. yay for being home for over a month this winter! win! 😀

I got to do my first abdominocentesis today!! I am really sad my time here at NCSU is over. The hospital is gorgeous, the students, technicians, interns, residents and clinicians were all amazing to work with, and I got to see some really awesome cases. Seriously, I couldn't have dreamed of a better experience here!

That is a large needle. I'm really good at stabbing myself with needles, but they're usually 22-20G. I've stuck one directly into the joint of my thumb (it was sterile so it just hurt like a mother) and on clinics I put one all the way through my finger, obviously off to the side of the bone. It was still pretty impressive.

No, people should learn to not suck. *sigh* Especially after 3 years together, you'd think we could manage that. A set up a special rotation for radiology for herself and I was asking about it - I couldn't fathom taking it from her though, I was just curious! What's yours if you don't mind me asking? (I promise not to take it!)

(Now I want frosted cookies... Actual ones, not metaphorical.)

I'm going to be working with Dr S on a research project he has going on. She wouldn't be taking it from me exactly, but if get the feeling she may be trying to get into it with me. Which would be fine if it were a big project, but it isn't :/ maybe she'll set up something different? I feel selfish but I specifically went and asked for it and had to do a bit of wheedling to set it up. Sigh.

I was wondering how many were due to recapping needles.

At the clinic I was at, one of the other drs would routinely stab people when vaccinating, giving meds, etc. He was known for it. He also tended to talk with his hands while holding an uncapped needle.
 
Just stopping in to say howdy ho! We finished our 3rd year "classes" this week but we still have a week of business and a week of clin path review before heading into the hospital so it is a bit anticlimatic. HOWEVER - almost there! 🙂 Super nervous but excited for the next thing. I've been a bit out of touch but good to see everyone is still alive and functioning!! (needle jabs and all 😉)
 
:hello: Glad to hear from you! We have another 2 weeks of classes, and the number of exams varies by person. I have seven in total, first one is on the 11th, last one is on the 28th. Our orientation is the 24th and rotations start on the 5th. So close!

7 exams 😱 I'm working on a take home right now....and by working on it, I meant that it is open and I've gotten my computer turned on. 😀 Need to just DO IT.
 
So, I'm freaking out. A year from now I need to have my life figured out...what?! When did this happen? The first two years of school went by at a snail's pace, and now here I am at the end of my 3rd year and I somehow have to register, study for, and take boards, find a job, figure out how to live somewhere when I don't have any money until I start said job, move, and then start paying back all of these ridiculous loans. I'm ready for school to be over, but I'm not ready to be an adult.

I'm graduating in less than a month and still don't have all that crap figured out :-/

Oh my gosh, I know! When I was at NCSU, everyone was asking me what my plans for next year were. Thankfully I just had to explain why I was in clinics so early.

I feel like things are already changing quickly because of my husband starting residency, too. I had previously been on the fence about renting vs. buying while my husband finishes residency, so when my husband liked the idea of renting, I started looking at that. Then I get to my in-laws' yesterday and find that my FIL has convinced my husband to buy instead of rent (my husband is incommunicado - out of civilization at the moment). So now I have no idea what I'm doing but at least I don't have to worry about the fact my dog is 55 lbs lol. Next they're going to expect me to find a job... sheesh.
 
Hey Deb, good to see you check in 🙂 I noticed your signature...it's about time for us to undergo the second SDN rite of passage (after changing status to veterinary student)!

I have seven days of class left, ten exams (one of which is take home, though) and then a month of break before I start rotations since I'm taking the first block off.

i wish i could figure myself out enough to start lining things up for after graduation. my heart is kind of set on getting a masters in marine biology (i dont really want to do any work with marine medicine though). as a veterinarian, i'm really only interested in practicing as a specialist - with my eye/heart set on critical care/internal medicine for several years now. and i want to come back to grenada/not be in the US. how does one turn these into a nice and neat little package?! never mind the money...ughhhhh

Ah. Rotations schedule. I dunno if I'll do it. Maybe when I'm about halfway through so it doesn't look so depressing. My first rotation is Small Animal Medicine. I'm just slightly intimidated.

No overlap here - they are done and we step in. Gonna be so weird at first. Maybe some island kids will be around to help.

I'm having a good week - no exams until a week from Friday, and then it's the three finals we have left... then done. Then we get a week off before we jump into clinics.

I just need to get started with studying since I know I'm gonna be like FTS come finals week. Even with just two exams. It's just that time.
 
I think my problem, TT, is that the whole "eh, screw it" attitude has arrived somewhat ahead of my last finals.

Took my nutrition final today. Watched Anchorman 2 last night instead of studying. Meh. Have a few more finals this week. Sitting here on SDN instead.
 
Our semester doesn't really come to an abrupt end. It just kinda fizzles out. We had White Coat two days ago. This week I've got a couple of hours a day of class ... mostly just orientation stuff ... finishing up our advanced cardio elective (open book, open group, open resource final.....) ... finishing up another open-book take-home exam .... all the kinda stuff that makes you sorta shrug and give it a big old half-hearted meh.

And then we get a week off next week before rotations. I'm *SO* thrilled that they implemented that this year so that we get at least a short break.

Congrats on the white coat 🙂 No fair that you all have so few finals compared to us.
 
I have a little over 2 weeks left and then I am getting in the car and driving 16 hours to my first externship. So excited that I actually get to spend the first 2 weeks of 4th year living with my husband 🙂 Now... just to get through the next 2 weeks and a ton of work and finals... with no motivation... at all.
 
I have three exams left. Two more full days of class and then two more lectures from another class after the exams on Friday and Monday. We have two days of all-day lectures in professional medicine or something weird like that, and then one more exam Thursday, and then white coat is Friday. Then we get a week off. then we start.

You actually have professional vet med lectures? They just gave us all A's....

Wasn't it your class that managed to get Fridays off, starting in like...first year? And a ton of days that started late? So no complaining about unfair haha

We got Fridays off for one semester - you guys had your clin path lab time on Fridays, we had it moved to Thursday afternoon and then got Fridays free. Same number of hours, just more crammed into another day.

We had a bit where we started at 9am instead of 8am - like Tuesdays and Thursdays for a semester or two. I swear the firsties started at 10am last semester, so hey. 😛
