Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was just thinking about this when I saw that med specialty post come back up, as of right now, what specialties interest you guys?

I've recently realized that I really want to spend my life in a town similar to my hometown, which is very small. I'm pretty sure I want to do Family Medicine with OB. I know its not ever going to make me rich, but I'm ok with that. So I'm planning on applying to the WARM program here at UW-Madison. Do any of you know anything about it at all?

No, I've never heard of it. I've grown up in very small towns my whole life, so I'm looking for a medium or so sized city. I'm interested a lot in forensic pathology and starting to get into infectious disease because of microbio. I guess I'm also interested in endocrinology because of my own condition.

Ob/Gyn is what I'm most interested in. I used to want to subspecialize in MFM or REI but now I think I would just stick with general Ob/Gyn.

I'm also interested in peds then subspecializing in neonatology. I don't think I'd want to be a general pediatrician.

Sometimes Ortho really appeals to me, too. I think it would be cool to do a fellowship in sports medicine but I don't think I'd ever actually do it.

I also like Neuro, and a few IM subspecialties appeal to me a bit as well. We'll see. I'm pretty damn sure I'll end up an Ob/Gyn or a neonatologist.

When i interviewed at UW madison last year, i stayed with a 2nd year WARM student. I dont know a whole lot other then the 1st 2 years of med school are basically the same (outside of a few interest groups/meetings) and then you obvi. focus on rural rotations for electives and do extra work in that area. Being that I assume you attend UW, im sure a ton of people could help you there. I met a lot of M1 and M2 in the warm program on my interview day. All i really know is you have to be a WI resident. I think its the 4th year that really differs compared to normal students as all electives are more rural based. Once agian though hopefully you can verify with someone there 🙂

pretty dead set on some sort of IM subspecialty like endocrinology, GI, pulmonology etc....I dislike surgery so i know ill never do that, at least i dont plan on it. Not sure where ill end up in Internal med but itll be somewhere. I think i know what im not doing (peds, geriatric, obgyn, surgery, psych) Over what im going to do. Though basically what i dont want to do rules out everything but like radiology and IM lol

Haha, I don't think I could ever by an Ob/Gyn, I just don't think I'd get into it, I wouldn't know for sure, though

Why's it gotta be so dang hard to just volunteer at a hospital? My gosh... it's like being a volunteer coordinator means NOT answering to emails or giving helpful information when people call.

I think I would be happy with any IM Specialty except Uro(is that IM?) and Gastro.

Path seems chill. Rads (onc or imaging) seems really cool. EM would be sweet. I'm not sure how I feel about surgery yet. Basically, I'd be happy going into whatever I'm good at =)

BTW, MS-l0l is going in my status when/if I get an acceptance, lol!

Thats crazy😱😱. Im jealous of people who dont have kids I have no life ahah...

Aww...are they young? Enjoy them while they are, because once they start learning how to really talk and complain, that's when it goes downhill. This is all from observation by the way. No baby Floatons for a very, very long time.

Ob/gyn FTW! It's funny because I was actually somewhat thinking about an REI fellowship too, just because it sounds interesting, but I haven't put that much thought into it and do I really want to do a fellowship? I guess we'll see. I think I might be too burned out by then.

Hes 4. Actually as they get older it gets much much easier. years 1-2 are ****ing hell i wont lie. It sucks so bad i mean ugh...you guys will all hopefully see later rahter then sooner lol. The older he gets the more i enjoy it.

If I had newborn + residency i think id end up in the psych ward:laugh:. You love your kid but especially that 1st year its so hard...That experience made me NEVER want to have another kid.Though my wife wants another...good thing i played the "I cant have another kid during med school/residency card because its too hard" She buys it for now...i wonder how long i can play it haha.😛

It's hard - I'm interested in general IM, and also subspecialties like hem/onc and ID (for different reasons). I also think I would like EM. I'm really interested in working primarily in a hospital, so a hospitalist or EM position really appeals to me. I'm also looking for variety, as well as an okay lifestyle (i.e., not surgery). This is all bound to change, but it's fun to think about, right?

I've recently realized that I really want to spend my life in a town similar to my hometown, which is very small. I'm pretty sure I want to do Family Medicine with OB. I live in a small town now, and while it's nice for my older years I'd rather spend my youth in a small to medium city. I don't know much about WARM, but If I recall correctly, though, Jefferson also has a rural med program that an SDNer is in. Maybe you could check that out?

I was just thinking about this when I saw that med specialty post come back up, as of right now, what specialties interest you guys?

My first choice as of right now is Orthopaedic surgery. I think doing total joint replacements would be very rewarding since you literally are able to improve peoples quality of life in a matter of weeks. I shadowed an ortho doc as he saw patients pre and post op (I also see a lot of surgeries) and during the pre op visit he always asked them if there was an activity they wanted to return to doing after surgery. Every patient had something they couldn't do any more due to pain (dancing, gardening, walking on the beach). Then during the post op visit he would tell them that they could start those activities again. I also like all of the instruments and drills. Ortho is a very hands on specialty. I think I would like ortho surgery related to sports trauma and arthroscopic surgery.

I also like anesthesia, pain management, emergency medicine, and family medicine.

I just love the idea of helping infertile couples conceive. And along that same frame of mind, helping high-risk pregnancy patients have healthy babies (as healthy as possible, anyway). The pay is supposed to be excellent for both, and I'm pretty sure at least REI has a much more manageable lifestyle than general Ob/Gyn, but I think I'd really miss the ability to do regular old deliveries after choosing that specialty. It's my understanding that REIs refer the patient back to their regular Ob/Gyn (and/or an MFM, depending on the reason for infertility, I imagine) after they are pregnant, and MFMs probably do C-sections more than anything else.

And yeah, I also don't think I want to do a 3-year fellowship after a 4-year residency. I'll be 26 (almost 27) when I matriculate if I get in this coming cycle. Of course, it's only one more year than it would take to become a neonatologist.

Who the hell knows? Not me, apparently.

Yea, I got interested in the forensic pathology when I saw an autopsy (and plus I've always been interested in forensics). I like endocrinology because I have hypothyroidism so I have a feel for what it's like to have an endocrine problem but I also know it can be difficult to really understand how that person is really feeling because some days can be good and some days can be bad (for example, I have a specific dose, I've been on it for a year, my doctor tells me my levels are fine now, but I pretty much feel just as tired and crappy as before. I dunno haha). With infectious disease, I really like hearing about pathogens and what they do. It's kindof like figuring out a puzzle.

i already can't keep up with this thread.

hey man, if you can't keep up, that's big trouble. You should see when 2014 thread gets hot and rolling, like 3 posts a second.

Four is an adorable age. They're more competent and curious about everything around them but it's really cute when they try something new, yet you're always worried that something will happen to them. Yeah...my cousins have saw friggin cute toddlers.

And actually, I was talking about when he (possibly they, yes?) reach teenager-stage. You know how it goes...they're awkward, yet they're demanding and b!tch about everything. I hate teenagers out of any age group, lol, even though we were all that age once upon a time. They just worry about really trivial things. I like how I act as if I have had kids my own.

I'm basically saying that kids are cute in general.

It looks like you and I have a lot in common! I think pregnancy is an incredible and beautiful thing, and when a couple really, really wants a baby and is ready, it's even more special. I've always wanted to specialize, versus being the do-it-all doctor, but a fellowship might be too specific.

He speaks the truth. I have witnessed them in action. KA-CHOW!

Nooo the video doesn't work. It's ok, I still love you Rick Astley.

So today I was talking to my mom about my dance class and I mentioned that my friend Ren is in the class (whom she knows is gay from previous conversation) and she said "just as long as he stays a friend."

My mom thinks I'm gay.

lol!

Which brings me to my next video.

I noticed that, too, we seem to agree a lot! 🙂 And I hear you on wanting to specialize, but perhaps not TOO much.

And yeah, the 2014 class thread is NUTS! I like reading it, though. I live vicariously through them.

I'm sorry to make this thread more random than currently is, but what do you guys think of the new Apple iPad Tablet!?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100127/ap_on_hi_te/us_tec_apple

I normally don't get too excited about new Apple products, but it would be pretty cool to have one of those to take notes in class. The bad thing is that it looks kinda like a big iphone and it costs $499- $829 USD.

It looks like a cool toy, but not worth the money. The up front cost is one thing, but if you want 3G then you will have to pay another $30 a month for service (in my case on top of what I pay for my iphone plan). I'm sure apple will put out a product that has great features with cool graphics that are user friendly. However, I can already surf the web on my iphone, watch youtube on my iphone, and get news on my iphone.

I'll wait until I'm a doctor and can afford to throw my money away on stuff like that.

Yeah, I would say it's not worth it if you already own an iPhone, Google phone, Nexus One, etc. I don't have any of those and I also don't have a laptop, which is why I'm looking for something new. I just think it looks pretty cool

I'm happy with my cell phone and laptop, they work great for me, I never usually ever get into stuff like the iphone and everything.

BTW, I love Bo Burnham, he's hilarious! Love his welcome to youtube song

For that little storage and that big a price? Either buy a netbook with more power (<$400) or a tablet pc with much more power and similar functionality (~top end of that range should work). I have a MacBook, but I have to say this is another example of apple selling a ridiculously overpriced product.

They're probably trying to do whatever they can to stay on top after the iphone rush

The high price tag on the ipad will probably go down in a year when they come out with version 2.0. I also think service providers will subsidize some of the cost in order to sell data plans. Especially if they let more providers besides at&t into the game.

Does this work with wireless internet cards?

I don't think so, it has built in wireless and is 3G capable which means the wireless card isn't needed.

Ah, is it like phone internet in that case? Atleast with my phone, my internet connection can be bad/slow.

hellooo just wondering what u 2015ers r gonna be doing this summer. Research? volunteering? travel? chillin? work?

Ah, is it like phone internet in that case? Atleast with my phone, my internet connection can be bad/slow.

At least on the iphone the 3G internet is pretty fast. It is the same internet I get on my laptop too. My old sprint phone had what they called the internet but it was very limited (fake internet boooo). I heard that the ipad was designed around a chip that apple built. Which is supposed to make it much faster.

I'm going to be filling out secondary applications and getting into med school.

Working, traveling, chillin. Anyone want to eurotrip with me in May/June right after primaries are turned in? It'll be the last vacation for about 10 years haha.

Well most likely, people will be filling out applications I bet. If you are applying to many schools, it's pretty time-consuming.

It's that bad huh? So its unusual for people to be involved in a research lab or volunteering during the summer of application?

Not at all. Of course you will have time to do those things while applying. It's just that it can take some time and effort if you apply to a lot of schools, and you have tons of secondary applications to fill out.

Eurotrip sounds amazing, but i was thinking of visiting the cities im going to be applying to, especially NYC and philly. but i guess theres time for both!

Haha, I'm actually trying to do a summer abroad program, so I will be doing just that, pretty much. I'm pretty excited!

Other than that, probably light research - mostly just chillin'. 😎

Yeah, I feel you. I've done some of that periodically throughout undergrad (visiting the cities and a couple schools of interest) I think I'll save the rest for *interviews:xf:*.

Where are you trying to go abroad? If the program doesn't come through maybe we'll cross paths! At this point I'm going by myself which is cool because then I can do whatever I want whenever I want, but I kinda feel like having one solid travel companion would enhance the trip.

Why's it gotta be so dang hard to just volunteer at a hospital? My gosh... it's like being a volunteer coordinator means NOT answering to emails or giving helpful information when people call.

I've got the exact same problem! I had to call the volunteer coordinator for three weeks before she actually answered the phone, and when she finally got everything set up she told me to call someone else and get all the times worked out, and now they've yet to answer their phone for three weeks. This is getting ridiculous. Sorry for the rant, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one with a crappy volunteer coordinator.

I'm trying to go to England. But if I don't go there, then I'll definitely go on my own - though I agree with you. Staying cheap hostels is great, but I'd always prefer to do it with someone else. Safety in groups, you know? Plus traveling with a companion or two is always nice.

Volunteer coordinators can either be your best friend or your worst enemy. I called one literally every other day for two weeks, always left a message, and she never got back to me. I'm now happily volunteering somewhere else.

No. It really has no ports of any kind. It's got built in wifi and/or 3G internet.

That's the spin they're trying to give it, but in reality it's just a re-braded ARM chip. The same thing that's sound in most smartphones.

It's that bad huh? So its unusual for people to be involved in a research lab or volunteering during the summer of application?

I did quite a bit of research during the summer I was applying. I did a bunch of 40 hour weeks. Doing secondaries doesn't take that long, so you'll have plenty of time to do other stuff, too.

Just found out from last year's class that thermodynamics generally takes 40 hours a week. Yes, that's a full time job's worth of homework for just one class. Plus about 40 hours of work for the other classes. 20 hours of work work, 5 hours of volunteering. 5? (I don't know if it will fit) hours of shadowing. About 24 hours total in class or driving to class every week. I don't know where I'm going to get the time. Planning on sacrificing thermo grade for the good of my other classes and my sanity. Ugh! //frustrated// The biggest thing tempting me to want to not go to med school is the fact that I feel like I've put in as much work into my undergrad degree this past year and a half as I would at med school (this according to a graduating WashU student who graduated from our ChemE program before md school).

Eww, thermo. I've heard very unpleasant things about that class. I love me some Maxwell relations, but I had enough of that stuff in Pchem. ChemE is hardcore...good luck with that! :luck:

Yea, I got interested in the forensic pathology when I saw an autopsy (and plus I've always been interested in forensics).
Interesting. Not many people mention this specialty....but I love Dr. G. and I wouldn't mind doing autopsy's. I'm most interested in MD/JD and pretty sure I will end up doing IM/CC or Anes/CC. Pulmonology is also high up there. 👍
