Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The better question should probably be why you're on reddit in the first place...

The majority of Reddit users (especially in r/politics) are so left/nonsensical that it makes my head explode. I was commenting in an article about the contraceptives being a "right" and a guy attempted to argue that because people can't control themselves and not have sex/safe sex, the government should provide them with free birth control.

😕😕😕😕

I'm a bleeding heart liberal and even I think that is a bunch of derp and trololo.

I've never frequented reddit since it's for nf's :meanie: . But I've gone cold turkey on that other site for nearly two years now lol.

I enjoy getting viruses on my computer....

that and I love pictures of cats doing adorable things! (if you couldn't tell).

I'm 100% down with free birth control though. Supposedly, 50% of pregnancies are unplanned even in the US... better sex ed and access to birth control could help keep these unplanned babies down (and maybe help some people escape poverty). But - I don't know if the government should pay for it. You would think insurances would (some do). The internet is more a "right" than birth control. The internet can give you sex ed!

It's not a first impression if everyone is too drunk to remember it the next day 😀

True but with my luck I will be the only one who drinks too much and makes myself look like an @ss.

I'm usually that guy at the party who goes so overboard he falls off the ship and hits the water.

And as such you will quickly assume legendary status within your class! I fully support this idea.👍

Well then...with your encouraging words I guess I'll attempt to reach blackout status. 😀

I don't think it is a right, but I think it might be a smart thing to do. I also saw the government stats about 50% of US pregnancies being unplanned, and the government estimates that based on that stat, every $1 spent providing free birth control would save over $3 in future healthcare costs of the pregnant mother... so it seems like a smart and easy way to reduce healthcare costs.

Definitely agree that it's a smart thing to do. But there is definitely a difference between a pragmatic solution and bestowing upon people "rights." I think people throw the term "right" around too much.

yeah...the right to have internet at your private home doesn't seem like it should be a right to me, either, although I think there are European countries who have passed laws providing internet to everyone as a right.

The right to bear arms?

Fair enough. I actually kind of miss research. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do at least a year of research in med school... might even go for a PhD. Can't decide.
I'm going to continue research after the first semester is over. I really like it, but I think it's the people you work with that determine if you'll enjoy research or not.

Congrats on being done Sun! So it's time for the big move?

Birth control is expensive and it would be nice if it was somehow magically free, but I'd like to see the percentage of unplanned pregnancies that happen when the couple is attempting to use at least one form of birth control. I feel like there's a lot of condoms getting broken and pills being forgotten that contribute to the problem.

Truth. Better sex ed is even more important. You can already get sliding scale (and some free) birth control at places like Planned Parenthood, at least if your income qualifies. People need to learn how to use the stuff properly first and foremost.

Back from the beach. Miss it already.

Well, it's only a "right" if we, as a society, make it a right. For example, there is no "natural" right to K-12 education but we've made it a legal right because we think it's in the best interests of the country.

I guess what that Reddit OP was arguing is that contraception should be made a legal right.

The law (edit for clarity: in those EU nations, and it's actually a resolution, not a law, IIRC) is that you can't deny people the ability to use the internet, not that it has to be provided for everyone.

I also saw that BC thread. It's stupid. Anything with a monetary value is by necessity not a RIGHT that you are ENTITLED to. The classical rights are the ability to choose what you and others do with your body, as long as it doesn't hurt others, and keep what you make.

Reddit has given me tons of viruses. Don't go there.

Are you talking about Finland? I think that's the country I read about. I have to admit, the way the story was worded was confusing to me before. But I can see how mandating that telecom companies provide 100% of citizens with broadband access isn't necessarily the same thing as making it a right that people still don't have to pay for; access simply has to be made available to those citizens who are in rural areas and currently don't have the option to buy it if they want it.

The way Reddit is set up annoys the **** out of me anyway. How do you get viruses from reddit?

I'll let you in on a secret: the viruses thing is a meme from youtube; they don't want the youtube community joining reddit because y/t is all 12 y/o douchebag kids.

The reddit setup is annoying at first, but I actually finding myself wishing SDN had comment karma so you could see what the good posts in threads were without having to read the entire thread. There are some lopsidedness issues, but meh.

You mean that high post count doesn't automatically equal high-quality posts? 🙁

I'm stuck in traffic hell right now. In fact, I'm so stuck that I'm able to peruse and respond to posts on SDN while sitting in traffic.

🙁

Sounds like the one time I decided to drive from Manhattan to Jersey in the middle of rush hour.

... I lied. I've made that mistake more than once.

I've driven a 24' Budget truck into Manhattan the day there was a supposed tornado touching down in Brooklyn and a bunch of the subways got flooded. That was the last time I've been to NY....evil, vile city.

Fixed that for you.

And yeah, that tornado wrecked my whole street and knocked down all the trees except for my block. Someone must be smiling down upon us lol.

Thats pretty lucky about your block 👍

Also, I don't despise NYC anymore than any other city. IMHO they're all evil, vile places😀

Bump! And icebreaker-ish question: What's your favorite summertime snack? Mine's frozen grapes.

Also, do any of you listen to the podcast "Mike and Tom Eat Snacks?" It's entertaining if you like Michael Ian Black's sense of humor.

frozen grapes are yummy! thanks for reminding me about them

=) My goal is to set up a bi-monthly or so settlers/board game + beer group. Everyone can take off 2-3 hours from studying and have some fun. 😀

I also have Monty Python Fluxx edition. And hope to collect some more games over the years....

ha, Settlers, Hipster! That's a good one. I wish i could tell all the biology grad students that play it atleast monthly this. haha. OK I will try to set-up an early August board game date (before school starts) if you two are interested. I figured it might be a better meet and greet, instead of bar-hopping. I might have access to a (regular-sized) boat too....

unless you actually know hispster games. then bring them.
