nah. they're freshmen, first of all. second of all, they're freshmen. lastly, they're freshmen. the game is also only 4 quarters of 7 minutes, so there's not a lot of time anyway.

What is everyone doing as far as housing (on/off campus)? I'm debating buying this baby pug from one of my friends but I'm not sure how pet friendly school housing is. I've never lived on campus/in a dorm.

I have only seen one school that had dog friendly dorms....I don't remember which it was, but maybe one of the new dorms at UCI? In general....no pets allowed.

Are you for sure going to the school I think you're going to? Is that in-state for you? I don't remember.

A typical day is thick thermal socks, long underwear/thermal base layer, ski pants, thermal shirt, tight sweat shirt if necessary, and my hardshell outer layer--which is very warm even by itself--and I usually wear a balaclava sorta face mask and always a helmet, as well.

long smartwool socks with the extra shin padding, long underwear, t-shirt, hoody, snowboarding pants, vest, jacket, gloves, neck warmer, hat, helmet.

My key to warmth is down. nothing beats a 600-700 fill down jacket.

thin smartwool socks ftw. thick socks ftl. for the record that's me + thermal shirt + flannel shirt + shell jacket top & thermal tights + shell pants bottom. less is more. no mid-layers unless it's COLD.

Luckily I don't have to do a move of any kind! I'll be living off campus. I would not expect a dog friendly dorm, I have never seen it. You could always inquire?
 
I don't plan on having the time required to take care of another living thing regardless of the housing situation.

And this is a bad idea.... why? 😕 Also, we get snow sometimes - the weather is just crazy and goes from hot to cold in a day's notice 🙂
 
My posts were tongue-in-cheek as well... but you don't know me and this is the internets and it was the wee morning hours. I was referring to what's wrong with the idea of flinging mud pies at people.... oh, well - you win some you lose some in the game of interweb facetiousness 🙁
 
I very desperately want to post a thread telling all med students that they need a f-ing attitude adjustment about their OBGYN rotations. I feel like the thumbs down on OBGYN has been getting even more extreme lately. I get it that you're scared....but if you walk into it KNOWING that it is going to suck....guess what....it is going to suck. And, by the way, there are a ton of things you can do to make it better.

Unfortunately....I'm sure I would get flamed. Because this is SDN. And that is what happens.

Hmm, I'm not sure it was UCI. UCI has a campus policy prohibiting dogs on campus (in administrative and housing facilities).

Hmm, I seem to not mind sub-freezing here in Montreal. It's currently -20 right now, supposed to be -30 tonight. I've been walking around at night when it's -25 and it's not bad at all..then again, I'm bundled under a jacket, scarf, a button down shirt and a tee as an undershirt..and jeans as my bottoms. When I stand in one spot (like outside the bar), THEN my toes start to freeze over haha...but if I'm walking, it's no problem/!

I think the most important thing for anyone in terms of "weather proofing" is just wearing the appropriate clothing..so gear up if you're moving "north"!

Yeah you know my opinion on this matter 😛. Just about every area of medicine sounds cool to me so I wont have to "pretend" to like anything. Except for maybe pathology - thank god that's not a required rotation.

Besides, I think as med students one of the coolest things we will be able to say is that we helped catch a baby 😀.

and Im hoping there is some way I can get out of OB/GYN rotation. I did the whole "mother/baby" rotation as a nursing student and did not fancy it much at all. Yeah. No. Im also hoping to get out of ER rotation as I'm not one for trauma.
 
Maybe it would be more productive if I ask why people hate it so much? I mean, other than the fact that doing vaginal exams all day just doesn't sound like fun to anyone.

If everyone articulated their issues I would understand a little better.

I'm guessing, as I have no misgivings about it, but it's probably:

diseased vagina exams
screaming ladies
screaming babies
screaming ladies shooting screaming babies out of diseased vaginas

Actually, I could totally handle the gyn part. Its the OB part I just don't like.

I've always felt an aversion to L&D because as a nurse its always been my job to calm the patient, have answers, etc., and L&D is just the opposite. You have to work the patient, you have no specific answers for lots of questions like how long is this gonna take, etc.

And then the whole baby thing. I hate fondling a baby and acting like I can make a good assessment of it other than pink and breathing, because I don't have kids and I lack that natural insight. babies scare me. and jostling a baby in front of its mother is terrifying.

The lady part exams don't really bother me, it's the OB that has me cringing.

-I don't like kids, especially babies and especially not slimy ones.
-Screaming🙁
-Mushy family moments
- I'm not one to get worked up over bad hours, but if you're doing something you don't care for it's easier to stomach if the hours are light (like psych😀).

🙁 That is a lot of use of the word diseased. In GYN maybe you see some of that, maybe even a lot depending on where you are. But you know that in OB, by the time another human is coming out of the vagina, a lot of people have taken a lot of time to make sure that it is NOT diseased, right?

A lot of the vocabulary that people use scares me too. They talk it up to be this incredibly dramatic thing which is only going to amp up every situation for you. It doesn't have to be so dramatic.

I feel like in OB, it is TOTALLY your job to calm the patient. In fact, patients feel this void so much that they hire outside people to bring in with them because they feel like they are not getting enough of this from nurses (because the nurses are busy doing what they are supposed to be doing, which is working the patient). The great part about not knowing how long it is going to take is that NO ONE knows how long it is going to take. You can't know something that is unknowable...I find this oddly comforting 🙂

You're not there to fix something...you're there for support. And support is just listening, understanding, acting and reacting appropriately, and....keeping a poker face. They are in pain. That is normal. And it is ok. I wish every med student had to stay in the room with a woman for a long birth so that they could see that the pain in labor is ok, part of process, and not something that (always) needs to be drowned out with medication.

Also...a lot of it is just about understanding what your patient's expectations are. Unlike when someone is sick...this is a day they have been thinking about a lot (hopefully) and they have expectations. If you can better understand those, you can better understand what your role with them should be.

As far as working the patient goes...it seems like medically it would be interesting. There is so much going on even when there is seemingly nothing going on.

Not liking babies.....totally get that. Unless you're peds or catching though, you can often avoid that entirely 😀

Ok, this I completely understand...if you don't like that stuff, OB is just bad and scary.

Also....you work with screamers??? WTF??? Even when we call a Code Pink here, no one EVER screams. We had an emergency c-section happen in under 10 minutes a couple of weeks ago and you have never seen a quieter atmosphere in your life.

I think for a lot of people...this is their real problem. Which makes me really sad. I think that medical students (and humans in general) need to be better equipped to handle the emotions of others. This business is SO emotional for a patient and by extension for care providors. I think with a little bit of really functional training about how to support people while they have emotions, a lot of people would feel a lot more comfortable.

Not liking slimy babies though....totally get it.

Also....how much screaming have you really seen? 😕 There is this like, loud birth howl when baby is being pushed out, generally...but there is not like, blood curdling screaming all of the time. In fact, if there is....that is a sign that the woman is not laboring properly.


Again...I think med students need to watch some prolonged labor so that they understand what is really happening and that pain is ok and that they dont have to fix things.

I'm gonna answer anyway😉

Sometimes a woman's bag of waters does not break until she is pushing. This can lead to squishy shoes.

Most of the time you know it is coming though and try to get out of the way😉
