I've been reading the med student threads and I think I'm going to either get a tablet PC + Microsoft OneNote OR a really powerful and sturdy laptop PC + Microsoft OneNote + one of those graphics pads so I can still pretend the laptop is a tablet PC and write all over the powerpoint slides and pdfs.

The thing that worries me about using an iPad on the wards is the possibility of it getting stolen. A couple of med students on the interview trail mentioned they use iPhones/whatever since they're more discrete and using an iPad comes off toolish. Small n for that last bit though.

Sun, I have one of the graphic pad things, a Bambu tablet. If you end up going to laptop route let me know, because if/when I get a tablet PC I'll be interested in getting rid of the graphic pad. Basically for the cost of shipping plus some cupcakes.

Tablet's not as portable and won't do apps the same way, but my droid incredible is super portable and has all of the medical apps I need. Plus it was free.

So for me, droid + tablet is both more minimal, and more functional than iPad + current laptop (+ droid).

Nothing wrong with it, it's super baller as far as those things go and I believe you can adjust the sensitivity. It also has a pressure sensor that makes your lines thicker/thinner depending on how hard you write.

My main beef with it is that it is an extra thing to carry around if I want to take it to class. I love to use it at home, I just don't do so that often. I personally mark up my powerpoints in class, like Kaushik mentioned, as opposed to afterward.

I want to streamline. I feel like I could get away with a tablet pc being the only thing I took to campus most days, and that thought makes me happy.

+1 to printing out slides, though I go two per side, double-sided, for a net of four slides per page. Has the advantages of versatility of pen(cil) and paper and not having to worry about power. I later take the marked-up printouts and scan them in so I'm not swamped in paper.

However, I really hate PowerPoints, if only because it's rare that an instructor uses them properly.

You guys ARE right about just using your phone for medical apps. I just get annoyed of the small screen size.

Yeah, Lenovo tablets have gotten some great reviews.

My doc busts out her BlackBerry routinely to look stuff up on Epocrates etc, and I think that's pretty common. My mom is too germophobic to handle something she puts on her face (like a phone) while wearing gloves and working with patients, so she has an iPod touch with a ton of medical apps that she uses.

I think I would personally lol if my doctor whipped out an iPad, but maybe that's just me 😎

As a Lenovo Thinkpad user, I can totally stand by the durability of these devices. My cousin ran over a Thinkpad with his Toyota 4 Runner--still managed to turn on! 🙂

Anyway, Sun, I'd strongly suggest you consider the X series Thinkpad, since it's a tablet PC. Although quite honestly, I'd save your money and just go for a regular Thinkpad T series without the tabletness. You may not get to play with the screen as much, but it's a very durable, reliable, and old-school laptop that won't break on you. You may have a peripheral issue, like your cooling fan may make lots of noise one day, but that is something you can easily replace. (Coming from experience--my friend and I both had to have ours replaced a few years after buying this device--mine was under warranty b/c I have the 3 yr warranty).

I don't plan on getting rid of our bigger HP laptop at home. For $500 close to 2 years ago, that thing has held up like a CHAMP. It plays my MMO very well and the only problem I've had with it is that I broke the backspace key. 😳 I DO want something more portable to take to and from class, though, especially something I can write notes on.

Also... please to be telling me which medical apps I can get on my Droid Incredible. Pretty please!

Yeah, I'll be keeping my hoss laptop at home. For apps, get the free versions of Medscape, epocrates, and I also had eponyms recommended to me.

Medscape is the most baller for differential diagnoses and epidemiology for various diseases. They have drug info as well, but for pharm stuff epocrates is better, IMO.

I haven't used eponyms but I believe it tells you about diseases/syndromes that bear a proper name (Horners, Leriche, etc.)

I just bought a new 15" MacBook Pro. It's sexy and I love it. (shun me all you want, PC lovers)

Cougs - dunno if this helps, but you can definitely put Windows on a Mac which would allow you to use Microsoft programs with the fluency you might be used to on a PC. They do have Office for Mac, I just don't know how easy it is to use yet - or if it even includes OneNote.

Anywho, my Mac is only 5 lbs and it's awesome. The Air is definitely the cheaper (as in, my Mac is awesome but crippled my bank account), and lighter option. It just doesn't have as many features - no CD drive, etc. which kinda puts a damper on it. Just my 2 cents 😉

EDIT: you asked if OneNote is easy to use: on a PC it's awesome. You can do SO much more than you can in word - make flowcharts with relative ease - draw arrows to things, put them in boxes, etc. It's awesome. Woot!
