Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Sometimes I feel as if I'm all alone in this world and I have no one to turn to... no one who understands my pain...

I understand it.

We had Lil Jon at our school a few years ago and it was pretty horrible. How much talent does it take to get up on a stage and scream WHAT? and OKAY! repeatedly? None. We all booed him but cheered for his keyboardist and sound-mixer-peoples.

MOAR cupcakes!

I want to make these for a Halloween party one day:

I just want to make these in general...

+1. Cupcakes are my weakness. (One of them anyway...)

I like the new avatar Daisy. (I've now seen 4 episodes of Archer... I need to catch up! But when I saw that Malory Archer = Lucille Bluth, I was hooked.)

Edit: I think I use ellipses and parentheses entirely too much. Sorry.

my problem with baking is I think my altitude makes most of my stuff sink. everything is always flat.

I love harvey homemade. strawberry, banana, kiwi, yummmm. and everytime I walk by the spouts baby food section, Im tempted to try it more.

GC - disturbing. I, myself, wouldn't sue...but I don't have children.

Holy crap. Leave the thread for a few days and come back to cupcake bonanza! I would post my cupcake pics here but my facebook page is already overflowing with them and other baked goods. I really should start a blog or something.

Also today I almost bought a pink journal that says "keep calm and eat a cupcake". But didn't because that encourages emotional eating which is unhealthy.

ABDC is making me wish that I got into Columbia so I could have taken classes at Julliard and become a dancer. Its also making me like lil' wayne. WHAT? OKAYYYY!

I haven't seen this season yet! But I've seen the others and I feel exactly the same way. Dancing looks so fun. Plus it makes you really toned.

vanilla on chocolate? thats pretty boring!

Is anyone getting an iPad for med school or already using one for classes/note taking. All the threads on here and I still can't make a decision!!

I've been reading the med student threads and I think I'm going to either get a tablet PC + Microsoft OneNote OR a really powerful and sturdy laptop PC + Microsoft OneNote + one of those graphics pads so I can still pretend the laptop is a tablet PC and write all over the powerpoint slides and pdfs.

eff macs for srs

I prob am... they are literally the exact size of a white coat pocket. Not to mention all the path/rads/pharm apps out there. So legit. Here's hoping they make ipad formatted textbooks too 😀

Mmm. Red velvet. When I finally get around to throwing the football party I keep wanting to do, I'm going to make green velvet.

And I'm also torn, Torr. ATM I think I'm leaning more towards a Tablet PC.

I honestly feel like a sell out just considering it. What convinced you to go PC after reading the threads?

Only thing I don't wanna miss out on is all the apps, but I'd much rather go with another tablet PC.

Mmm..never tried green velvet. I really want one of those oreo cupcakes!

I seriously haven't even held one yet. Is it that easy to handle? I can see myself dropping it.

I prefer good old powerpoints printed out (4 slides per page!). I've never even used my laptop to take notes with. I generally prefer reading out of books/paper rather than the computer screen, so that probably explains it.

Do you absolutely need an iPad/tablet/etc to take notes? I've heard good things regarding the iPad and taking notes on it. Are you thinking of the iPad or iPad 2?

The thing that worries me about using an iPad on the wards is the possibility of it getting stolen. A couple of med students on the interview trail mentioned they use iPhones/whatever since they're more discrete and using an iPad comes off toolish. Small n for that last bit though.

it mostly convinced me to stay PC, because it showed me that macs wouldn't be more useful in any way over a tablet PC or lappy with graphic pad. Microsoft OneNote sounds perfect. Literally the only thing I would miss out on by not getting an iPad would be the reference apps for when I'm out in a clinical setting away from my comp, and I'm going to be putting all of those on my new phone. My main concern is how to study and take notes best, and the PC option was cheaper, more durable, more powerful, less problematic, etc. jmho

Me too, I think I'm going to get one. That HP touchsmart you linked in one of the threads looks pretty hawt.

OR a really powerful and sturdy laptop PC + Microsoft OneNote + one of those graphics pads so I can still pretend the laptop is a tablet PC and write all over the powerpoint slides and pdfs.

Sun, I have one of the graphic pad things, a Bambu tablet. If you end up going to laptop route let me know, because if/when I get a tablet PC I'll be interested in getting rid of the graphic pad. Basically for the cost of shipping plus some cupcakes.

I honestly feel like a sell out just considering it.

You are.

You will.

If I'm going to spend $500, I might as well spend $700ish and get something that is more functional than an iPad and a suitable replacement for my current gigantor 17" laptop. Tablet's not as portable and won't do apps the same way, but my droid incredible is super portable and has all of the medical apps I need. Plus it was free.

So for me, droid + tablet is both more minimal, and more functional than iPad + current laptop (+ droid).

zactly.

What's so bad about your Bambu? If I got a graphics pad I would want one that is just as top-of-the-line as the tablet it would replace. I really don't want it to be frustrating or insensitive (or too sensitive) while I'm writing with it...

or too laggy. or too small! or a million other things. If I can't find the miracle graphics pad I'm looking for, I'll just go with the tablet PC.

Nothing wrong with it, it's super baller as far as those things go and I believe you can adjust the sensitivity. It also has a pressure sensor that makes your lines thicker/thinner depending on how hard you write.

My main beef with it is that it is an extra thing to carry around if I want to take it to class. I love to use it at home, I just don't do so that often. I personally mark up my powerpoints in class, like Kaushik mentioned, as opposed to afterward.

I want to streamline. I feel like I could get away with a tablet pc being the only thing I took to campus most days, and that thought makes me happy.

+1 to printing out slides, though I go two per side, double-sided, for a net of four slides per page. Has the advantages of versatility of pen(cil) and paper and not having to worry about power. I later take the marked-up printouts and scan them in so I'm not swamped in paper.

However, I really hate PowerPoints, if only because it's rare that an instructor uses them properly.

Do you absolutely need an iPad/tablet/etc to take notes? I've heard good things regarding the iPad and taking notes on it. Are you thinking of the iPad or iPad 2?

iPad2 if iPad. I used a tablet PC throughout post-bacc and it was really handy. Just haven't kept up on current PC tablets.

Thanks Sun. Do you happen to have any go-to review sites you would recommend for PC tablets?

You will.
You know me well.

You guys ARE right about just using your phone for medical apps. I just get annoyed of the small screen size.

I haven't started researching them at all yet >.< sorry
I have no idea where to even start. I just know that is probably the option I am gonna go with

In the end, I'll probably just procrastinate until medzealot chooses his, and then copy him : D

Someone (was it theWUbear?) had a thread looking into tablet PCs pretty deeply. I think he picked the Lenovo tablet, or at least was seriously considering it. If I were in the market for one, this one looks pretty tasty.

Yeah, Lenovo tablets have gotten some great reviews.

I haven't heard anything from an actual user of this tablet, but it looks pretty sweet for the price:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/s...ies/3/computer_store?aoid=35252#defaultAnchor

For a tablet you can configure that thing to have a lot of computing power for under a grand.

when my hp lappy broke after 3.5 years, it broke hard. I had to carry around a bookend for a month to hold the screen up

and the bloatware it came with drove me insane

My doc busts out her BlackBerry routinely to look stuff up on Epocrates etc, and I think that's pretty common. My mom is too germophobic to handle something she puts on her face (like a phone) while wearing gloves and working with patients, so she has an iPod touch with a ton of medical apps that she uses.

I think I would personally lol if my doctor whipped out an iPad, but maybe that's just me 😎

bookend . HP bloatware is in tents. It's like a gigantic, flaccid pee pee has somehow been integrated into your computing experience. I still might prefer this over an iPad though...kool-aid flavored ding dong.

it would be lol-worthy

As a Lenovo Thinkpad user, I can totally stand by the durability of these devices. My cousin ran over a Thinkpad with his Toyota 4 Runner--still managed to turn on! 🙂

Anyway, Sun, I'd strongly suggest you consider the X series Thinkpad, since it's a tablet PC. Although quite honestly, I'd save your money and just go for a regular Thinkpad T series without the tabletness. You may not get to play with the screen as much, but it's a very durable, reliable, and old-school laptop that won't break on you. You may have a peripheral issue, like your cooling fan may make lots of noise one day, but that is something you can easily replace. (Coming from experience--my friend and I both had to have ours replaced a few years after buying this device--mine was under warranty b/c I have the 3 yr warranty).

Epic multiquote ahead! I'm SO glad we're talking about this in here.

I do as well, the thing is, I often forget to PRINT the damn things about before class, and I seem to never have a working printer at home.

Me too, I think I'm going to get one. That HP touchsmart you linked in one of the threads looks pretty hawt.

Yeah, someone else mentioned it so I Googled it and linked it. It DOES look nice!

Also, if anyone here is considering a tablet and doesn't want to pay extra for the Wacom name, I suggest a Genius. They are cheaper and very well reviewed. I got the hubster a big one for Christmas (he is an artist) and he LOVES it. 👍

I don't plan on getting rid of our bigger HP laptop at home. For $500 close to 2 years ago, that thing has held up like a CHAMP. It plays my MMO very well and the only problem I've had with it is that I broke the backspace key. 😳 I DO want something more portable to take to and from class, though, especially something I can write notes on.

Also... please to be telling me which medical apps I can get on my Droid Incredible. Pretty please!

Samesies, and keep my bigger laptop at home for fun stuff.

Ooh! I forgot about these. Guys, GO TO THAT WEBSITE AND SEARCH FOR YOUR SCHOOL! There are some really good deals there. Temple has some and I'm sure other schools will, too.

Epic indeed! I'm glad too.

Samesies, and when I do print them I tend to suck at scanning them as Maubs suggested, or organizing the hard copies. I need to cut out as many steps as possible. I'm not a naturally organized person, which means simplicity is power.

Yeah, I won mine in a so-called penny auction (avoid these like the plague that they are). It ended up costing me less than $50. Like I said, I'd be happy to dish it off to anyone interested, otherwise I'll put it on e-bay.

Yeah, I'll be keeping my hoss laptop at home. For apps, get the free versions of Medscape, epocrates, and I also had eponyms recommended to me.

Medscape is the most baller for differential diagnoses and epidemiology for various diseases. They have drug info as well, but for pharm stuff epocrates is better, IMO.

I haven't used eponyms but I believe it tells you about diseases/syndromes that bear a proper name (Horners, Leriche, etc.)

Ok all you tech geniuses....do me🙂

1 - I HATE writing, so I don't think that a tablet is really the way for me to go.

2 - I am used to taking notes via typing

3 - I am sick of carrying around a heavy laptop

4 - I'm pretty organized, and eventually like to have all paper copies of things to study from

What should I do?

At the moment, I'm thinking Mac Air with that One Note thing? Would that cover it? Is that program annoying to use; has anyone tried it? I would like to be able to alter/type on PDF notes or whatever they end up giving me, but don't especially want to write by hand.

And....thanks MedZ😉

you actually retain things by typing them?

I just bought a new 15" MacBook Pro. It's sexy and I love it. (shun me all you want, PC lovers)

Cougs - dunno if this helps, but you can definitely put Windows on a Mac which would allow you to use Microsoft programs with the fluency you might be used to on a PC. They do have Office for Mac, I just don't know how easy it is to use yet - or if it even includes OneNote.

Anywho, my Mac is only 5 lbs and it's awesome. The Air is definitely the cheaper (as in, my Mac is awesome but crippled my bank account), and lighter option. It just doesn't have as many features - no CD drive, etc. which kinda puts a damper on it. Just my 2 cents 😉

EDIT: you asked if OneNote is easy to use: on a PC it's awesome. You can do SO much more than you can in word - make flowcharts with relative ease - draw arrows to things, put them in boxes, etc. It's awesome. Woot!
