Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
yea, ur ec's are definitely lacking 😉

Hehe

I am truely lacking in shadowing though 🙁 I've only shadowed one MD (med examiner) and then an optrometrist (sp?) which made me realize why I would NEVER go in that field (no offense to anyone who likes it)

why didn't you like it? i actually don't have much of a clue what they do, since i don't wear glasses either.

it's been way too long, how is everyone??

You're alive!!!!!!!!!!!! *hugs*

An optometrist checks vision, checks for glaucoma, schedules for surgeries, etc... It was really boring, repetitive 🙁

Learning optics in my third quarter of physics made me realize that optometry wasn't for me 😀

sup man, most ppl have been in post mcat coma the last few days.

yea doesn't sound like a lot of fun, i guess pathology might be like that for med too.

ha i'm doing great, I just decided to try a little experiment, and cut out all internet for a week or so, just to see how productive i could be, and the results are truly mind-blowing, i have to say

Haha, wouldn't work for me. I'd be so bored I would sleep more often.

BTW, I like pathology 😡 like forensic pathology though

haha, right, you like forensics. i was thinking more like looking at one slide per minute to determine the cell types or something.

Haha  Yea, that would bore me too

heard you can bring in bank with that tho, especially as a derm pathologist or something. but boy it's gotta be boring, you're not even really diagnosing anything most of the time. otoh, i'll probably find out a lot more things i didn't know about the field in med school.

Haha, same here. I like the forensics portion of pathology because you actually get to work with crime cases while using medicine

if you tell a school that you plan to update your MCAT score, is it possible to receive a secondary even before submitting the 2nd MCAT score?

is that something you're looking to get into in med school? not crime solving, of course, but research that could help crime solving?

if they don't pre-screen, yes.

alright, so if you're getting a secondary, iis it essentially a sign that your grades/mcat are up to par? in other words, if you get a secondary, is there any sense in updating your score at that point to the school

The MSAR tells you which schools pre-screen for secondary apps. If they don't screen I would assume they just send you the secondary automatically. Therefore it would be no indication you are up to par.

yes there is, for most schools that pre-screen, it's more or less just a formality. as long as you pass their minimum threshold(usually something like 3.0/24) you'll get a secondary. there are few schools that have fairly stringent requirements for sending out the secondary(Vandy is a notable one, they only give secondaries to people they've decided to interview). even then, the requirement for getting an interview is much tougher than getting a secondary.

alright cool, thanks a lot guys

welcome 😀

i think AMCAS automatically updates the schools when you get something new, like a new MCAT score or if you assigned a new LOR to the school, so you probably won't have to worry about it anyway.

Going to karaoke thursday night, any song suggestions? hahaha!

I'm studying for my midterm tomorrow... no book for the class but it is on 500 VERY dense pp slides. I'm on slide 450 of 500, can't wait to get this test over with.

Considered b/c UTSW accepts some oos and I heard you can get in state tuition after a year (haven't confirmed this though).

u can do that at a lot of skools i think...might be a little unethical lol but im sure u can arrange yourself as a resident of any state after 1 year...dont quote me on that though

It depends on the states requirements to gain residency. Many req you to be there for reasons other than education, work in the state, pay taxes in the state blah blah blah.

do you know how much overlap there is between Amcas & the texas app? I might apply if it is really easy...

They require a different lengthed PS(shorter, I think, but I don't remember that well), also you'll need your LOR writers to send their letters to them along with a required form that they need to fill out(like 1-7 how would you rate this student and stuff).

The good thing is that in order to apply to the other Texas public schools, all you have to do is basically click a button and pay 10 more dollars for each school. There also are no secondaries.

Sounds like a pain in the butt at this point (LOR gathered, PS done etc...). However it sounds like Texas has it pretty good... wish CA was like that (with reasonable stats too).

wait what?!? you just apply and thats it? then you just wait for interviews? wow thats amazing

Yea, it's not that bad really. But I think only UTSW is very open to OOS'ers, you'll need to have some connections to Texas to have a good shot at most of them. I woulda applied to them if I wasn't applying to like 30 schools

who ever created wikipedia is awesome... reading about haplotype blocks b/c the lecture slides from my class suck balls.

you should be invigorated by all the application talk :d

holey moley i just saw ur mdapps...41 :wow: thats really amazing man congrats...i wish i could even come close...and to retake a 35! man i would take that in a heartbeat

Ha, thanks, when I took my 2nd one I didn't have a green card yet(even tho I'd been in the states since when I was 11 🙄), so I figured I'd need to be exceptional in some area to get an acceptance. I had some other issues as well so I figured I could improve the second time around 😀

Anybody here a junior submitting AMCAS before stupid spring grades (quarter system)?

Ooh! It's been a month, but I just got a call from the library volunteer program near me. They have a match for me to tutor two guys for their GED. Awesome.

what does that entail? are you gonna make them read real good or something? 😉

Yup, I'm going to establish The Geekchick Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn to do Other Stuff Good Too.

Name the quote!

Really, though, I'm going to help them prep for the GED.

do they have to be ridiculously good looking too?

Hey, guys, I just have a quick question about the transcript. I've noticed that AACOMAS has a new requirement this year. They are not going to verify the transcripts until we send all our spring term grades up to junior year (at least). Do you guys happen to know if AMCAS requires this too? My stats are not that great so I'm planning to apply as early as possible. My school is quarter system and I won't get my spring grades until June 24th. 🙁 I've read the instruction book for AMCAS and I haven't seen any request like that. But I still want to make sure. Does anybody know? Thanks!
