Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

LOL maybe you can point me to one of perverted posts by dingy. (so I can make fun of him IRL)
I only see him at a research lab so I guess he only reveals his true side on SDN?

Oh, you won't have to look hard, but I'll be sure to bring it to your attention when it does come up.

That means dingy, you have to be on your best behavior. Let's see how long that lasts.

Mine is doing the same thing :-\ I keep getting the blue screen of death, but I've been running my virus scanner like no one's business and nothing ever comes up 😕

I got the blue screen like 2 weeks ago and it freaked me out. Luckily, I'm hoping to get a new comp this summer.

pfft, that won't work, i'll find some way to punish her irl if she ever dares to bring it up :meanie:

Thanks ya'll =)

Whimsical, does your university remove your guaranteed acceptance when you apply elsewhere?

No problem! Hope you feel better soon.

And, luckily for me, it does not. Hence the ridiculously unrealistic list on my mdapps. Nothing to lose, right?

For me besides my failure mcat (29), I had a lot of clinical experience both research and volunteering wise, i mean 1000s of hours easily, but I had next to no non clinical volunteering exp outside of a one 4 month stint of tutoring i did. I also had little to no "leadership" roles that everyone loves to talk about. That was a huge weakness for me obviously but it worked out fine, granted i had a good reason as to why i didnt have the "perfect" app volunteering wise but w/e. What I did and what you may want to do also is if your mcat comes back fine, start getting more clinical experience during you app season just in case you have to reapply. If you did this, you could easily have a solid year of experience if you werent succesful. I did this except for me, i did 2 non clinical volunteering things. And while I was accepted at way more places then i thought, it was still nice becuase it gave me something to update schools with and to write meaningful LOI. Just a thought 🙂

Haha, 29 is not a failure! Also, I'd kill for 1000s of hours. Especially since the time I've spent with my doctor parents probably doesn't count.

so when do we start filling out primaries? where can i find them??
i'm not too sure where I should be at right now, can anyone fill me in. 🙂

I wasn't expecting those questions until August 😛

=)

3 Finals to go... and I've totally lost all momentum after being sick for 3 days. Impossible to study/cram for 2 of these finals. We'll see how they go lol.

started to enter my activities in to amcas:

"Senior member of a career development club-
  • daily discussions of the intracacies and challenges presented by a career as a physician.
  • participate in an ongoing debate of healthcare and healthcare related issues in order to be better prepared for deal with these issues in the future.
  • continuously promote an environment of understanding and mutual respect in order to better serve the needs of newer members 😀
  • networking with like-minded people preparing to serve the community and sharing ideas about how to meet the needs of the underserved."
SDN as an ec... hmmm, sounds good haha

is it appropriate to list in a bullet format. i've done that so far, as well. additionaly, i've added what the experience(s) meant to me personally in a short description, yay or nay?

I basically wrote mini-essays for all of them. I figured that since many schools don't have secondaries that require you to write anything, I'd better explain every activity as much as I can on the primary.

I am going to go with bullet points. check out this chicks blog on MD apps, seems like lots of good advice (she recommends using fragmented sentences). http://www.mdapplicants.com/profile.php?view=viewprofile.blog&id=10417

EDIT: not that I know anything more than any of you but to me writing a long winded essay about stuff is a waste of time in most cases. ADCOMS know what shadowing, hospital transporter, pre-med club entail. If you get carried away with the explaination it might smell of BS anyway.

my method to this point combines the two methods...

I think I'll just do bullet points, have enough explanation but short enough that they can be easily skimmed through while getting the point.

Depends on what you shoot for, IMO. Shemarty obviously shot pretty high, and those schools all require long-winded secondaries. There are some schools out there that have very short secondaries or don't send you real/any secondary until they invite you for an interview, so if you've got something to explain, I figured you'd better explain it in the primary.

I see your point. Though I think most of my EC's are fairly straight forward and can be summed up w/ bullet points well (although not everybody may be so lucky). I actually have a modest number of ec's but all have long term commitment (1.5-4 years each).

I saw someone who had a lot of EC's on here and despite a huge volume of activities it actually seemed kind of week to me at first glance, but after looking again I noticed there were a few gems in there. That person did them self a diservice by listing a lot of fluff and making it hard to notice their meaningful commitments. I think the easier it is to read quickly the better.

This is why I'm consolidating a lot of stuff into one grouping i.e.:
TA
DG Leader
Tutor (College)
Tutor (HS)

All under Teaching/Tutoring. I think it shows the long-term involvement I have in teaching/tutoring.

I may also put both hospital volunteering positions under one heading. Although I feel one was far more significant than the other, neither has been for a significant amount of time. Not sure what I wanna do about that yet. I may also separate being an official TA from my other tutoring XP.

Club involvement is also going under one overall heading.

I think I'm also going to do the "other interests" thing. List some of the stuff I like to do that isn't super significant but still contributes to my interestingness lol.

If it were me I would put both under 1 activity that way the duration and weekly hours would look good, then describe the diversity of the 2 commitments in the description.

I think on paper 1 longer commitment looks better than 2 shorter.

magic are probably going to be champs this year.

shemarty was obvi a superstar applicant and has some good advice there. I would say bullet points or mini essays are fine, its what you think works best. Shemarty i think says bullets are the best, i feel otherwise as my life experiences have been so unique writing mini essays about things helped me a lot. At most of my interviews they were always super impressed with what i had written down and some even told me this is why they wanted to interview me as i had a great writing style and was very interesting to them.

point being, there really isnt a right or wrong way its subjective. If you write mini essays and you suck and it sounds like a bunch of bs then you might want to go bullets. If you are a good writer or have a lot of interesting things to say, then maybe a mini essay will be better. Adcoms will prefer both ways and you will never please everyone. Remember that you want schools to have the full picture of you before the 2ndary as some schools only send 2ndaries to those they interview/screeen hard for a 2ndary.

Great minds think alike

ha, you have no idea if she has a great mind! or you either, for that matter 😉

pfft, the magic has jameer this time around, plus the lakers ain't as strong this year.

the show, known universe, on nat geo is ****ing my mind so beautifully. goodness. i love it.

yeah ill give you jameer, but as long as bynum gasol and odom are getting 45 rebounds between them, there is no hope for orlando, or cleveland for that matter

oh and the lakers have this one guy, eh no big deal....his name is kobe, not sure if you've heard of him or not😛

kobe needs some cortisone or something and stop playing like hes old.

i feel you on that...he shoulda just taken a month of two off and gotten surgery on that damn finger...he actually has arthiritis in his index finger now (which is why he still plays with that stupid cast that messes up his shot)

hopefully they can just win this year and then kobe can just sit on his butt all summer and get better

sorry to all the women i bet basketball talk is as boring as women and their endless stilettos

the world championships are this summer, and knowing kobe's competitive ass he's going to play.

yeah i dont blame him...USA doesnt fare well in it anyways maybe theyll lose early on

damn now im reminiscing on the last gold medal game. kobe raped spain in the last 7 minutes....i wish they show that game again sometime

Since we're on the topic of sports:
Basketball is the most boring playoffs ever. Way too much time in-between games. Its been nearly a month and yet only one round is finished, and they're two games into the 2nd round? Doesn't seem like the hockey players need as much rest as the basketball players in a much more physically demanding game (full disclosure: i'm not a hockey fan but they're playoffs have been ten fold more exciting and compelling to watch... entertaining tv).

And back to the pre-med world.. who's pumped about filling out the primary?

i havent even started lol i will this weekend tho, hopefully i can come to writing some of the ps because i know its going to be a long process

i think i just need a break for a few days ive had a really hectic few weeks

yeah. of course i'm all about team USA, but ricky rubio is nice.

it's not about what the time the players need in between, its about the almighty dollar and programming. come on, man. if its so boring, dont watch. that simple.

Joke...duuurrr....

no jokes on me! 😡

Ha, not with Howard and Gortat around! Howard's gonna hammer you inside while the rest stroke it from the outside. VC is no Kobe, but dude ain't too bad either and is an upgrade to Turkoglu.

rashard lewis vs. lamar odom might be the deciding match up

and you're right, but i think travel time is an issue as well...i would love them to play every day, trust me

honestly, im liking basketball less and less every year with these new rules and jus the rigged refs its almost disgusting....every game, the average viewer can easily point out 2-3 horrible calls, and an active viewer probably 5-7...which often decides a game

go back a few years (more like 8-15, barring tim donaghy) and then you have much more legit basketball, but then again many more less skilled players

hahah howard is ballin this series, but i think the key for orlando is lewis, nelson, and the bench. howard is not going to change an entire series....orlando lives and dies by that three

yeah. i agree. its less of a bruiser league and is more about finesse.

they only hit on 3s when howard is hooping. inside out.

true, but without howard, they die by the three.

i would much rather see a orlando-la finals than a la-cavs finals, for some reason, other than lebron, i think the cavs are pretty boring to watch (maybe im just biased 😉)
