Random Icebreaker Question #5 million:

Tell me your miracle cure for being on the verge of getting sick.

I can't be sick...not for at least 11 more days.

I chug a TON of water and drink a bunch of tea. And if I have time, take naps 🙂

I kind of think Airborne is a bunch of crap, and the effect is all placebo, but I could be wrong.

every couple months i'll go through a tea phase. i'm not currently in one of those phases though.

a TON of water(as in chug till i'm full every hour) and a lot of rest usually does the trick for me too 🙂

you know how you feel when you're walking through campus in the fall semester and you see freshmen and how they are so easily identifiable. channel that feeling, process it, now related it to new people on SDN. same feeling.

Definitely. I could tell I was an SDN veteran when I started pointing out the noobs and becoming impatient with them. Kind of like you can tell when you become an upperclassman when you start pointing out and making fun of freshman.

I'm about to do the whole freshman thing all over again, though...

yea, i'm finding it hard to answer noob questions seriously on sdn these days

at least you're not 18 this time haha

i cant. i'm thinking to myself "search search search"

 yeah, it's bad right now.

My personal philosophy is to lurk for a while before posting anything on any forum I join. If I'd posted immediately after finding the site I may have been just as obnoxious.

That's a good strategy. Then you know the process and maybe even how to defend yourself if attacked.

I still don't even start threads, although mostly because everything I feel like saying/asking is taken care of in 2014.

yeah. the class threads do a good job of condensing things for those of us that use them.

Oh god, me neither. Sometimes when I post out of here I get attitude from people who find the time to nitpick every. word. I. say.

I just read and post here, and the occasional post elsewhere.

The more I posted in 2014, the more comfortable I became posting elsewhere. Now I don't care (obviously).

For a while, I only posted in 2014 and the school specific threads. I only started venturing out of those recently.

i post pretty frequently on the DO boards, but its a different world over there. much more laid back.

i posted in the pharm board a few types, cuz i saw dr. yoda post in there, def got a diff feel. i tried to joke around a lil on the resident board too. was promptly ignored.

I could imagine. Sounds nice.

It's so infrequent that drama occurs in the 2014 thread that it shocks us whenever it happens. Those threads are nice shelters from chaos and brutality of Pre-Allo.

I wonder if that's indicative of how it'll be for you in school, too.
i hope so. most people on the DO boards are encouraging and supportive of each other, much like the class threads. the only person i intend on competing with in med school is myself. everyone else, good luck.

Bed time for me. I'll be around here more for the rest of the summer since I'm quitting work soon. This thread is probably more active than 2014 right now because of the secondary madness (well, maybe not yet, but soon).

😴

I'm really hoping for a laid back vibe, but we'll see what happens. I just feel like spending time worrying about how everyone else is doing is not at all productive. Wish more people agreed.

I guess my goal for med school is to have as good a time as possible while still getting things done.

Night, metallica!

yeah. i'd like to keep as many options open as possible, while maintaining some semblance of a normal life.

(This was in response to me asking what is a good answer for when medical schools ask things like "what other schools have you applied to/interviewed at?" since I'm scared of being rejected just because a school thinks they are not my top choice)

just keep it vague. i just told them "the state schools and a few others like xxx, yyy, zzz, and such" with xxx, yyy, and zzz being schools that are similar to the school i'm interviewing for.

What do you guys think about smiling and saying something like "Sorry, but I'm making it my practice not to answer that question; but, from what I've seen on my visit today (facilities, friendly students, etc), I'm certain that I would love to matriculate at this school."

Does that come across in any sort of negative/annoying way? Would talking around the question make the interviewer feel less at ease about my answer than actually listing other schools off?

Personally, I wouldn't answer that way. It is too confrontational. I would simply say that I applied to xyz, then I would proceed to bring the focus back to the school you are interviewing at by listing what you have learned about the school that makes it appealing to you. If you are afraid they will think you don't want to go there, then assure them that you really do.

Yeah, I agree. You don't have to tell them every school you applied to, but just a subset of your list.

Bad bad bad answer. As dingy and I said before. List a few schools and move on. Schools like say george washington know they are everyones safety. Schools like havard know they are everyones top choice. None of that matters. If you come across as an interesting and engaging person who they think will be a great doc you are fine. Adcoms aren't stupid they know how the game works and how ppl apply to 30 schools. You are seriously worying too much over this question🙂

Me too. Though BU told me I'm complete.

I was hoping for an update from UVM today🙁

Man, I just got BU's this weekend. I haven't even started.

Yeah, my e-mail is veeery quiet. I need time to catch up anyway.

Aww... I'll be your wife. I'll stay in a separate house and obey your sponge laws. Promise. 🙂

I got sick (still am) on my birthday too. No fun. I shall think non-sickly thoughts for you.

If you're doing the cleaning, you can have whatever sponge laws you want🙂
Awwwww, also, happy belated birthday! Mine is the day after tomorrow🙁

I think if I sleep all day today I will be ok. I had to cancel everything today and now I am really worried about my Calculus grade....and my Yale secondary...the only one I haven't written🙁

oh no the yale secondary... bah

yogacougar you and i seem to have applied to some similar schools

A little tip from me to you bleargh....calling a female "old" days before her 30th birthday isn't going to earn you any points🙂

Aw, thank you! It was a good one.

Yeah..I sat on the Yale one forever, but I feel like once I started writing it, the words just came out. If only the same thing could happen for Cornell. I don't get why I'm having so much trouble with it. That and Hopkins are hanging over my head.

Calculus... *sigh* Good luck, girl! Hopefully your professor is nice, especially if you're too sick to do anything.

Maybe he thinks it's okay because you're still sexy?

I kept meaning to ask you if you took any pictures of your meal. I am a weirdo....I photograph my food🙂 Comes from too much yelping, I think.

Cornell was tough for me too. I think Yale will be ok once I start, I just feel so crappy I haven't started. I am going to nap and then it is my goal to bust it out when I wake up.

Only girls think I'm sexy....I wish I were a lesbian.

 you mean your second annual 29th birthday?

Aw, thank you! It was a good one.

Cornell was tough because of the word limit, Hopkins also has rather restrictive character limits..

natuarlly. age is but a number.

i hear teh gays are not such fans of bicurious folk

Haha, only little children and men 20 years older than me seem to find me appealing, so I may need to look at other options if it doesn't work out with this guy. Being flexible is key. 😛

I wish I had! But I forgot my camera, and I only got my wonderful phone mere hours beforehand and hadn't figured out how to do things yet. Now that I have a more portable camera I shall be taking pics of the delicious food Boston has to offer.

isn't the yale one just "why yale"? or has that changed?

Yep - Why Yale.

haven't posted here in a bit, i got so bored at home i decided to stay with my friends in london for a week. i totally ignored secondaries and turned my attention to alcohol and food lol twas good times, but now that im back home i think i need to plow through 5 secondaries today.
I did submit jefferson today tho, it feels kind of good when all u have to do is wait for them to send an invite.

hope every1 is A okay

btw did any1 else lol when they read rosalind franklins secondary essay q

i hate those why "xxx" school essays, i've got a version for big city, one for medium city, and one for small city. i mean, why your school? cuz you award md licenses that's why!

 I like your approach. Maybe that's why it's taking me so long; I usually scour the websites of the schools for programs that might be a good fit. That's at least a little digging, and elaborating about why my past history fits well with the school also takes time.

I really want to send an essay like "I'm applying here because the city your school is in is tolerable, you give MDs, and I have a shot. Oh, and I heard your aid was good."
