Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Packing up the Jeep and driving back down to Blacksburg tomorrow. <3

We are (and by that I really mean "I am") planning to get the apartment repainted and get the garden ready to go for spring planting ('cus Lord knows I won't have time to prep my boxes between a week from now and the end of the semester), pulling my school stuff together, etc.

I've been living on Pinterest this past week (it's a horrible, horrible addiction) so I'm feeling particularly crafty. We'll see how well that translates. 😉

Either way, can't wait to be back down in Blacksburg. <3

? I think I learned counting differently than you😉 We go back the 22nd, right?

Yes. =)

Syllabi are printed, binder is organized, old notes are trashed put someplace dark and hidden because I can never bring myself to let go of things that even have the slightest shred of hope for being important in the future...

Alright Semester 2, let's do this dance~

Histo is already coming back to haunt me, I hate it soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much! I like refuse to look at histo notes ever again.

Histo notes? You mean you did more than stare at 50 Shades Of Purple all day long?

😉

Well, I'm falling in love with parasitology! It's interesting and the professor is awesome. I also volunteered to help with a research project which is based in cardio and exercise physiology. I'm hoping I get picked, running dogs on treadmills sounds like fun!

And today, in physiology, our professor brought an earthworm and cut its head off... To show the neuronal control and reversal of direction. He likened it to the intestines. I was a little mortified.

Well, I'm falling in love with parasitology!

I'm really excited for that class. Parasites are so interesting! How something could evolve just to take advantage of another living creature... it's like they cheated the system, or something. I just love it.

I admire her as a professor and a person. No offense, but anyone with that dedication and interest in parasites deserves an award. They're not one of my favorites

Way to make me feel like a slacker before the semester has even started👍

BTW- I know you and everyone else in our class (and the world) is on Facebook except me, but in case you don't know, a couple of us are going out this weekend for Audrey's birthday. I'll text you, but I wanted to mention it on the internet for no apparent reason

I am pretty sure autonomous pharmacology was created just to torture us.

Goal for this weekend: Study all neurology lectures... make posters of really important things... ie cranial nerves and locations... hang them up in flat so they are always visible.

Reality for this weekend: Go to party Friday night... get heavily tipsy... come home crash on couch at 2AM.... attempt to watch movie... fall asleep, wake up at 5AM go to bed... wake up at around noonish.... Spend Saturday wondering what you did Friday... lay in fetal position due to the joys of being a female... cover 3 lectures of neurology, stay up until 7AM because you can't sleep, wake up at noon on Sunday... do laundry, clean out rat cage... clean flat... try to go over some lectures... lose focus... and now it is 11PM...

Yup... I got 3 lectures covered!

Feeling totally and completely lost in 2 of my classes and don't even know where to begin 🙁. Wish we didn't have Biology of disease 1 or 2. If the animal is already dead there's not a whole lot I can do to help it.

Loving anatomy like usual and have found that pharmacology is actually enjoyable, at least so far 🙂. So far musculoskeletal has been interesting as well.

Classes start tomorrow.

Had to abandon the 'burg this weekend because we lost our power in the first real snow storm of the season on Friday, but it's good to be back in town... again. 😉

Excited and apprehensive all at the same time.

A less whiny, more relevant post: How many of your guys' schools have a HSVMA student chapter? I chit-chatted with their representatives while at NAVC, and am toying with the idea of trying to bring one to our school... there doesn't seem to be any other sort of national organization focused on animal welfare that has student chapters. But I'm generally pretty HSUS wary, so I was curious if anyone on here had any experience with the group?

We don't have one (SCHSVMA) here at VMRCVM, FWIW. This is the first I had heard of a student chapter of the HSVMA, so I looked it up real quick to see which schools do: http://www.hsvma.org/hsvma_outreach_veterinary_students#.UP8ygCfoQaY

We currently have an animal welfare club at VMRCVM that is essentially a subcommittee of our SCAVMA. You could try that route if you do not want something directly associated with the HSUS (i.e. working with your SCAVMA to promote animal welfare events that students can participate in to serve the community and increase positive exposure for your school).

A few of my classmates and I are in the process of trying to start an ASV (Association of Shelter Veterinarians) student chapter here: http://www.sheltervet.org/students/. While it is not directly an animal welfare group, animal welfare is a major concern of the shelter veterinarian (as it should be for all vets). Once (if?) this group gets started up, we plan on rolling the animal welfare projects into the SCASV.

Going either of the routes mentioned above (esp. the SCAVMA animal welfare subcommittee) could fulfill what you need w/o being directly affiliated with the HSUS if you are averse to that being on your CV.

Good luck!

Damn our policy that in order to change the time of a class, we have to have a unanimous vote... We had ONE person vote no to change 2 classes from 1 pm to 8am so that we would be done at noon for those 2 days. She want sleep in. She actually refused to vote ( which I think makes her opinion moot) so while our class thought we had a unanimous vote, we found out later it wasn't. I hate selfish people. Just don't come to an 8am class if you want to sleep. I don't understand why they wouldn't want to be done at noon instead of 2pm. She can friggin nap then!

And seriously, why is our policy made to cater to the one or two stubborn people? Majority or plurality should rule. The class above me tried to vote to make the requirement 90%, but one guy said no (the bf of the girl who voted no in our class) so it didn't pass because that vote wasn't unanimous.

Some people...

We have that policy too if you go to change something on the schedule after a certain point. We've used it once so far to move our Biochem final so that it was 2 days after our Anatomy final last semester instead of one.

Something similar happened to our class last semester. We wanted to have our last final (a take home paper) be able to be submitted before or up until the end of the designated exam time. So basically you could submit it early if you wanted or at the normal time, so people could leave for break earlier. We didn't get the unanimous vote, even though there was really no downside.

Unanimous vote? That sucks. Our class voted on what the percentage should be--I think we ended up going with 87.5%, which means like 4-5 people can say no and it will still pass. Maybe you all can vote to change it next year!

That's a little funny, voting to choose how many people must vote the same for things in the future.

That one girl will never vote to change it... I'm not hopeful about the policy changing.

I can understand unanimous votes to move tests... But this was simply to move a lecture.

Sooo I'm thinking of running for SAVMA junior delegate and would love some feedback on my essay. Any takers??

Holy balls this week has been insane.

I started my MPH class on Wednesday, had some training to do on Thursday, and I'm an on-call alternate for another event this weekend. Already behind and it's only been 4 days! :scared:

School canceled because of ice! Which means no physiology test...yay!

Our first hell week starts Monday, but that means our first set of classes will be over Friday :woot:
Driving home with my friend Friday afternoon and going to lunch (at my FAVORITE PLACE) and wedding dress shopping on Saturday with my mom and best friend 😍
Then Superbowl Sunday! A WHOLE WEEKEND of not a SINGLE thing to worry about! Awesome! 🙂

I will say I am having a rough time this semester with not being able to see my fiance though. It's really starting to take a toll on me. The worst part is that we have no idea when we will be able to see each other again. I last saw him on Jan 4th and I may not see him again until April or May. I could handle it more if I knew, but not knowing is the hardest part. Not cool  I might just have to suck it up one weekend, board the dogs, and fly up there. Even if I get to see him for 4 hours the whole time I'm there. 😎
But I digress...😛

I have had a rough start to this semester... so far behind. But I will catch up! It is just going to take some dedication and time.

Right now I am trying to figure out if I will have the funds to bring my cat over here next year... I really want to bring her but I am feeling really tight with money at this time... hopefully, it will all work out. :xf:

This video won first place at our Vetscapades. Hope you all will get as much amusement out of it as I did.

it's so distracting to actually understand what they're saying. It got very confusing at times.

lol

The best part was-

Hitler: It's all my anatomy groups fault. We spent the whole week cleaning fascia!!

Consoling woman to forlorn woman: It's okay- you just wanted it to look nice.

Truth. So much truth.

We've been passing it around facebook all day. Haha. Not sure how it ended up on OSU's facebook page, but there you have it.

Interestingly, my mom didn't find it as funny as I did (I was literally LOLing). Non-vet people 🙄

I died!

My group first semester was so into cleaning fascia we cleaned the linea alba right off of our dog... whoops.

Day 1 of hell week 1, semester 2.
Go time! Respiration in 2 hours.

Ever have to leave an exam extra early because your digestive system hates you? :bang:
I had that test by the balls too man. Now I'm hoping my Christmas treeing skills were on their A game today and the 80% I did finish went perfectly :uhno:
Seriously pissed. 😡

Oh noooo Em!! I'm sure the 80% you did was great!!

This is really maddening! I've had to learn what to eat and how early I have to eat if I have morning events that prevent a bathroom break 😳 I'm sure the amount of balls grabbed will get you the grade needed

My anatomy professor and I were joking about making a song about anatomy. Challenge accepted! Just wrote one and emailed it to him. I'll share here, for kicks and giggles. It is called "Dissector" and is the style of Justin Beiber's "Boyfriend."

If I was your dissector I'd never hack away
Clean cuts and straight lines would always prevail
I'd gently clean your fascia, and pet you everyday
I'd make sure the reader would never ever say
"Just cut that off, it doesn't matter anyway"

Your structures are always perfectly there
I'll keep you warm cuz you've lost your hair.
Prepare for a group hug in 3, 2, 1...

I'd like to be, the very best for you
So giddy up, Pony, my love for you is true.

If I was your main dissector, I'd never hack away
Let slide the scalpel across your rubbery skin
I can move fast or I can move slow.
If I was your main dissector, I'd never hack away, no never hack away.

Tell me where to cut, yeah, tell me where I don't.
You've got the most epic intestinal tract I've ever, ever seen.
Teats near the prepuce just blew my mind.
I spend my time with you, it helps me unwind.

Horsey, horsey you're just an empty shell
But that doesn't mean I still won't treat you well!
Dip you in that tank so you stay nice and wet
Got your horsey friends so I don't have to fret.

I'd like to be, your main dissector.
Hey groupie, let me cut her.

If I was your main dissector, I'd never hack away
Let slide the scalpel across your rubbery skin
I can move fast or I can move slow.

If this is not being made into a music video it desperately needs to be. I just almost died laughing.
