Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
August 26th, too. We have a plant toxicology exam right when we get back...ugh..😴👎(

Anyone else excited to go back to school? I can't wait to get back to Michigan to start setting up my apartment. Our schedule does not look too bad this fall. We don't have class until noon 3 days a week 🙂....But we do have like 2 exams per week..

I am ridiculously jealous of you and Trilt. I have class at 8 most days and 9 on the other days. We don't do sx till 3rd year, and we have to take a comprehensive exam our first day back, so I am actually dreading it 🙁 I really love what we are learning but I resent having to spend my summer studying for a test that not other schools have to take. Oh well once classes start I'm sure I will be happier.

No class til noon 3 days a week, wow, that must be nice. How late are you in school til on those days?

We have class 9-2 most days not including electives and labs. Just got a scare because I opened first years instead of second years calendar and saw 8 AM day 1 and was like 😱 not cool. I don't miss first years schedule. They'll be there before us and most days will have another hour to go after we're done for the day. Although, starting at 8 AM does has it's advantages- you can get a good parking spot, no elective in your class beforehand so you can go in and don't have to wait outside the auditorium and be quiet.

Do other schools have a big/little program? I met my little and that was when I really started to feel like a second year. Meeting her, showing her around, and answering her questions took me back to before I started vet school. So much happier to be going into second year than first 😎.

That really stinks! I looked over some of my anatomy notes and clin path notes, it is shocking just how much one can forget over the summer. I can see the point of a comprehensive exam on day 1 back, but that does not make for a fun summer.

We have a big/little program. I took my 2 Littles out today for frozen yogurt and a tour of the school.

I'm glad we don't have a comprehensive exam... We do have a quiz in clinical pathology the first day and were given an assignment over the summer (the dreaded toxic plant book).

Been sincerely considering staying here and not going back to school. I just don't want to do it anymore. :uhno:

Same. I have been forced to have to study during the summer, so I am dreading having to come back in a month and begin doing it again. I have heard that second year gets better here. Better as in it is more interesting and more medically related but it also gets much more difficult. Not sure if I should be happy that it will be more interesting or scared that it will be more difficult.

Yeah same thing I hear about second year at UF too. Here's to hoping :xf:
I do miss my vet school buddies so I'll be happy to see them again, but very sad to leave my fiancé 🙁.

Second day of classes today. A lot of our courses are team taught this semester, which I enjoy.

Our classroom is nice, big desks. However, we are in a back building not connected to the vet school and there isn't stadium seating. I got a front row seat on the end ( exactly what I wanted) so yay!

However, my back is killing me. I've not sat much all summer, and sitting is what hurts my back the most. Yesterday I had to stand for half of the lectures and went and iced my back during lunch. I got worked in for an emergency Physical therapy appointment which should help. My spinal surgeon appointment isn't for another 2 weeks...

Would bringing a cushion help? The big desks are nice but those seats suck (if it's the same ones we had). Either way though, just sitting in the same place for 6-8 hrs a day is killer! The nice thing about that classroom though is you can go out and enjoy the sunshine between classes. 🙂

So I am going back and forth whether to buy Zachary's Pathologic Basics for Vet Diseases... any input?

Yikes, I ditto what skittles said, maybe try one of those nice gel cushions...?

Well I got a nice back brace that is supposed to help keep my back in line, as I apparently have major sway back!

I'm contemplating asking the administration for a standing desk. They mentioned before they could make it available to me.

I'm having difficulties going from a work mentality to a school mentality. I'm mentally exhausted every night, as well as physically exhausted.

We have to pass the CFC component to continue on to spring semester.... :scared:

I don't start until september 16th, so not going to worry about it right now. 🙂

I apologize for the fact that this is still a course. I know my class tried really hard via course evals to get rid of it. 👎 At least it's not until October and it's only a few weeks.

Oh dear...2nd year is going to be painful. According to upper years I've talked to, 2nd year is boring but you have less time in labs so I guess it will be better than 1st year

I'm going with this year will be better than last because I don't have to spend 5 hours a week in anatomy lab 👍

We have:
Biology of Disease II
Bioanalytical Pathology
Preventive Medicine
Toxicology
Pharmacology
Foundations III

Ugh I have my test over everything from first year tomorrow and I am really nervous! DVMD- sounds like we are in a similar boat. I really don't want to fail because if I do I have to take another test over Thanksgiving break which happens to be just before finals. If I fail that, I might be out of the program.😱 Wish me luck! I hope everyone can get back into the swing of things easily! Enjoy the semester!

I actually enjoyed 2nd year a lot more than first. Not having anatomy was an important part of that though, I admit

Yeah, except for principles of health management and a few frustrating moments during anesthesiology, I liked second year more than first. I felt way more relaxed in second year. Bacti and viro are a lot of lists, but it is manageable.

I passed the exam that I took over the summer!! 😀

I am officially a 3rd year (2nd year of GEP program)!!! :soexcited:

👍 Good Job!!

Hope your year starts off better than mine... if second year is how today ways... it will be a long year. 🙁

I am going back and forth literally every day about whether I want to specialize in ECC or just practice in ER once I graduate. I know I will most likely want to do an internship. I really love emergency and want to practice in it. I know that ECC will teach me a lot and make me an awesome vet, but I also know that most ECC diplomats work in a critical care setting and not on front line emergency receiving. *sigh.* I know I have lots more time to figure this out, but I just want to have a goal in mind.

We're taking for core classes:
clinical nutrition
clinical techniques
pharmacology
theriogenology
pathology 2
bacteriology/mycology
radiology

Then each track takes a specific, separate nutrition-food animal, small animal or equine. I'm taking food animal nutrition.

Then electives...I'm taking diseases of poultry.

Typed out it seems like a lot. Only 3 days in and it feels like a lot too! This is going to be a long semester!

This quarter we actually don't have too many "subjects"

General Pathology (+ Path lab)
Medical Genetics
Immunology (+ Immuno lab)
Pharmacology
Toxicology

Thats crazy they make you decide so soon. I would be freaking out.

I'mm also now taking an independent study course on the human animal bond, which sounds like it's going to have some really interesting lectures. I also get credit for training my dog and getting involved in some cool volunteer opportunities. Hoping to possible work towards the goal of getting him a CGC title.

Well, they do and they don't. It used to be that you could change tracks later, as long as you took the appropriate nutrition course for that track. However our increased class size changed the game a bit. There were too many of us (myself included) wanting to take additional nutrition courses, either cuz we're tracking mixed animal (like me) or because we were afraid we would want to change tracks later. The nutrition department decided they couldn't effectively teach all of the labs with so many students, so the classes were capped and we had to decide on just one. We were told that it won't affect changing tracks later and Public/Corporate trackers now don't have to take a specific nutrition at all (besides the other 2 general courses we all take). I don't know how it is all going to pan out. Our class has been/is the guinea pig class for lots of new policies....😕

That class sounds awesome!

Well, so far, this year is so much better than last year. Better professors, better classes, and much better seating arrangement.

Pharmacology is probably my least favorite class at the moment because its the biochemistry aspect. Once we get into actual drugs, I think I'll like it more!
