I'm actually pretty excited about it. The students in the class are in charge of coming up with guest speakers and planning field trips, so we have a lot of control over how the class turns out...or so it sounds. There is also the possibility of collecting blood samples from dogs at the World Schutzhund Competition in October which would be sooooo neat to see.

Dang, that stinks, its never fun to be the guinea pig class. At least you guys have individualized species nutrition, I think that would be really interesting. We have electives in those areas, but nothing with labs.
 
Started off last year with 3 deaths in the family... starting off this year with a gastric ulcer and gall stones. :annoyed:

But I disagree about it getting better... I love second year so far! Waaaaay better than first year.
 
I agree, second year is amazing compared to first year! I just like being a big and knowing what's coming. I came in this year knowing just how tough it was gonna be, which beats the uncertainty of first year 🙂. Also, we are in class a lot less than the first year. Our average schedule is 9-2 vs. the first years who are there 8-3 or 4. We do have electives- for me 4 hours on top of the regular schedule a week. But usually Mondays and Fridays are shorter days with just 3 classes so it still averages out to 9-2.

The material we are covering this year is much much harder than what we covered first semester of last year, but we've worked our way up to it and can handle it now.

I love love love Clinical Pathology! If I wasn't so set on medicine/nutrition I'd totally be thinking of being a clinical pathologist!

Our clin path professor is pretty much THE best professor on the entire planet. There is no debating this.
 
But you generally have to do a PhD in addition to the residency. Womp womp.

That (aside from not being that great of a student) is the main reason I lost interest in pursuing that. ~12 years of college/higher ed is more than enough for me.
 
So I have this huge dilemma... Neil deGrasse Tyson is speaking about 1.5 hours from me in a couple of weeks... problem its on my reading day! Why! I am having the worst internal struggle ever of totally blowing off my reading day and driving to Purdue to listen to him, or being a good student and studying. 🙁 Decisions.
 
I feel so weird cuz EVERYONE loves path except me. I mean, it is okay. We're in our second semester of it and clin path next semester but I'm not in love. I don't get the attraction. I don't get my lack of attraction either-especially in labs. I mean, I love dead, cut up stuff. I loved anatomy. I guess this is my anatomy loving karma....😕

Otherwise 2nd year is much better than 1st. Much more clinically relevant material, much more material, clinical techniques labs with real, live animals and absolutely no warm up time going in! What's not to love? Plus I love already knowing those in the trenches with me. It makes everything much easier😀

Had our first exam of second year this morning. True to form, I was the first one done. Hopefully I did as well as I think I did.

This week will be interesting. No classes past 2 PM... But no pain meds for my back except Tylenol, which does nothing. I have an epidural this Friday and they don't want me on NSAIDs because of the bleeding risks.
 
Rocked my clin path exam today, terrified for pharm Wednesday, and I just want the Friday gen path exam to be over already. Can't wait to see my fiancé and lots of my family for a wedding this weekend!!
Unfortunately I have an ulcer and have to spend study (cram) time tomorrow to get an ultrasound to confirm gall stones. Not to mention I have to fast till 3pm. I doubt that will be conducive to studying. My body just hates me. Bleh.
 
I totally rocked my pharmacology test! I got an A, and it was one of the highest grades I've gotten in my vet school history... I think this is a good sign that this year will indeed be so much better the last year! So excited and proud of myself. 😀

I like pathology... so far. 🙂

I don't like our anaesthesia professor... he stands in one spot, turned to the side so he can see his powerpoint screen and talks to the wall/computer. Also, his notes are not organized and he lectures really fast. Going to need to record his lectures just to be sure I am getting down all the information.

So far, pharmacology isn't bad.. just a bit boring.

We also have surgery (which is mostly self-directed learning), diagnostic imaging (haven't had any lectures yet) and clinical oncology (no lectures yet).

Overall, I can tell the material is much greater than last year, but I actually enjoy the material this year; it seems much more relevant.

I think Path is interesting but I don't think my test today went too well. So far I think Parasitology is my favorite...but I'm weird.

Parasitology was by far my favorite class last year so I guess I'm weird, too 😛
 
First exam of the semester on Friday--neuroanatomy! EEEK!!! And then we have our urinary exam on Monday, and I have an avian elective exam sometime over the weekend (online, but closed book). EEEEEEKKKKKK!

My first midterm is on Friday and Monday too! So I am in the freak out club with you!
 
Second gen path exam in a couple hours... I felt great about the first test and then didn't do as well as I expected (ugh!) so I'm hoping to step it up a bit, but crap there are a lot of pathways that I'm barely keeping straight. 🙁 I would really like to love a class at some point. Maybe one with a reasonable weight in my GPA, even.

You and me both. I'd love to do awesome in Path cause it's 16 credits...don't think I'm off to a good start at the moment. It'd make it up for my subpar anatomy grade.
 
First surgery was today - after a parasitology test, the day after the pathology one. 🙄 It was a neuter and I was anesthetist. Went well! Are other schools starting surgery yet?

We've started Surgical Principles where we start learning all the gowning,gloving, etc techniques but our first spays are next year. We do have opportunities to do surgeries through Shelter Med Club. I've done close to 20 cat neuters already and will probably be getting certified in the next week or so and moving onto spays by next semester (we have to finish Surgical Principles first) Haven't been able to fit in a day with the Delaware SPCA,which allows you to do some dog neuters. Hoping to fit one in this year.

We do surgery in November, I believe.

We have an anesthesia test on Monday. I need to care about it.... I should care, but I don't. At all...
 
First round of exams done. We have about 10 days off before our next one...which I'm already behind on and probably need to do well on it. Really wish I could sleep for a straight week.
 
Wow, I had to go 2 pages back to find our thread! Must be 2nd year!

I used to think it was awesome that at VMRCVM we take 3 nutrition courses- fundamentals, clinical and track specific. Now, studying for my food animal nutrition midterm, I'm way less enthused. In fact I really don't care. At all.
 
Our only nutrition classes are electives (not sure how much we'll get in GI--that's next semester). Off to study for neuropath!

This perfectly explains how I felt about nutrition last year. It is kind of a dry subject to be honest. (At least it is to me).




I also passed both of my midterms that I had today!!! 😀
They are only worth 13% of our final grade, but I really didn't think that the one went well, so happy to see that I did better than I had expected. 😀
 
Two classes and a surgery (assistant, though, I'm not doing it) between me and our week-long fall break. I'm just going to collapse for at least 24hrs, k?
 
Neuro exam went pretty well, I think!! 😀 Needed that after not doing so hot on endocrine...
 
I'm currently running the exam gauntlet. We have at least one exam and/or a couple of quizzes each week until finals. Second year is better for me school material wise but there is a lot of in-class drama and fighting plus problems with budget cuts and administration that have put a damper on things. My critters health problems have stabilized so at least that's one less thing to worry about 🙂
 
Well Thursday and Friday were our Fall Break. Took a much needed, but way too short, trip to Georgia to see my sister, alma mater, and a canine patient I took care of this summer.

We had the surgery written exam on Wednesday and we have the practical Monday. In order to perform the live surgery at the end of the semester, you must pass the practical with a 70%... which I think is a little low. I mean, scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and, and being able to place square knot sutures, are all pretty important.

Starting the next Monday, we have the second round of exams. We even have an exam on Friday Nov 1... so no crazy Halloween stuff on actual Halloween.
 
I can't believe y'all do surgeries 2nd year. I don't feel ready at all for surgery. Plus the added stress when 2nd year is already so stressful. Best of luck!!!
 
I am going to crash and burn one day and it will be terrible. On top of second year, I tutor first year histo, I work in ER radiology, I volunteer at a cat rescue, and I am the treasurer of a club whose president drives me insane. I'm just waiting for it to happen. Ugh. 🙁 And I feel terrible that I can't go home to visit my boyfriend this weekend like I told him I would. So burnt out..
 
If it is getting to you, then you should cut back. If you don't want to drop anything, then just cut back a little bit with each thing. A few less hours, fewer responsibilities, something. No sense in doing all the extra stuff if it's gonna make you have trouble with your DVM (that's why you are there in the first place) or your relationship (because is that really worth it) or your personal health (duh).
