The two orange ones look like my cat when he was a baby. 😍

Is he the one in your profile pic? He's so precious! 😍 He looks a lot like my kitty. This is what she looked like when she was a little kitten--I got her when she was two months old. She's older and fatter now, but still adorable.

So far I applied to these schools:

4. Duke University School of Medicine ***Reach, but sure, why not***
8. Loma Linda University School of Medicine ***Lifestyle choices?***
10. LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans ***Don't they favor IS?***

I was thinking about adding 5 more:

GWU *** So many applicants ***
Georgetown *** So many applicants ***
Boston
Tufts
Rush

Just a few thoughts.

kautionwirez, your school list looks good overall but I noticed a lot of OOS schools in it...like South Carolina, LSU, VCU...do these all accept a large number of OOS applicants? Or do you have ties there?

Did anyone else get an MSTP invite from UAB? I assume they're sent out to everyone.

LSU SC VCU accepts OOS. LSU started to accept OOS this year. I do not have ties with them. I am pretty sure I checked most of the schools via MSAR before I applied to them 😕

Smiter, just out of curiosity, are you a super-positive person IRL?

Well, a lot of state schools accept some OOS applicants--like ten out of a class of 120. Looking at South Carolina, for example, 2200 OOSers applied and 77 got interviews. That's 3.5%. For interviews. VCU is more reasonable, looking at MSAR. LSU-NO had 9 OOS students in their class of 190.

Anyway, if you really love those schools it can't hurt to give it a shot, just saying that the numbers aren't in your favor. 🙂

Yep.

I'm guessing everyone who took the MCAT gets one.

OK good. Because I have no interest in MSTP or in UAB.

Do I seem that way? I think I'm pretty positive compared to a lot of people. At least, I'm positive about other people. Pretty negative about myself a lot of the time.

Whenever people post things about "What are my chances" your responses are always like "Just work hard and you can do it!" I just get an image of one of those really peppy chicks that you see on TV

Don't be a Negative Nancy.

Because I think everyone is a special, unique snowflake and can REACH FOR THE STARS if they only WANT SOMETHING BADLY ENOUGH!!!111 Haha. 😀 In all seriousness, I think there are few people who really just have no chance in hell at getting into med school. This blind guy did it. Who am I to tell someone that they absolutely can't/shouldn't try for it? I'd like to think I'm pretty realistic about the amount of work that has to go into it--some people really do have to try a lot harder than others.

And I'm negative about myself because I need to improve my work ethic. I didn't go to lecture for o-chem II...ever. Taught it to myself and skated by with an A because the test averages were so low (in the 40s and 50s). I won't always be in that situation, though. It's hard for me to make myself do something unless I know there's no other option.

This thread is in the middle of the page. This won't do.

Shameless bump.

Also, meditated and felt a lot better! Worked on app, and its done now. Just gonna proofread it a few times today and tomorrow and submit it tomorrow with one school (Southern Illinois, since I have no chance of getting in anyway since I'm a suburbanite)

I didn't even apply to SIU. I figured there was no point.

Jefferson submitted! No essays! muahahahaha.. still "working" on GW and Tulane.

Just as a person with their own fair share of prejudices (justified or not), I don't know how comfortable I would be with a blind guy trying to diagnose me. So much about medicine is built around visual evaluations ...

Also, Ochem sucks. No one blames you for skipping.

Glad to see things have calmed down inside phnerd's head.

Or is this all just a clever charade? :scared:

speaking of clever charades ... pretty bold gambit calling out all those trolls when i know damn well, it's you. you certainly have the time, and you may even possess the power...

suspicions = officially raised

semi-srs op-ed question:

true or false: there is inherent value in diversity?

I actually might feel more comfortable with him there. Think of how much more he had to prove himself than every other medical student out there. I bet he pays a lot closer attention to things than most physicians do.

semi-srs op-ed question:

true or false: there is inherent value in diversity?

True, if you mean diversity of experience/background. You don't really learn much when you're surrounded by a bunch of people who already think the same way you do.

Oh, I see where you're getting at...

Just kidding, turns out he's engaged. :meanie:

semi-srs op-ed question:

true or false: there is inherent value in diversity?

True, at least as far as medical schools and making better doctors. I think that doctors need to relate to their patients, and that not all their patients will be like them, therefore the more people that doctors are exposed to that are not like them, the better doctor they are likely to become. Though they have to be open to new/different things.

This.👍

serious that he went to my school. apathetic about his accomplishments.

so to rephrase the diversity question: do students benefit in any tangible way via interaction with those representing a heterogeneous array of cultural and/or socioeconomic backgrounds?

i think we need to be incredibly careful about how we categorize people, but i also believe that "diversity" or "affirmative action" may be about more than just atonement for antiquated offenses. whether this alone justifies the implementation of such policies - or whether this has an real detriment or benefit to society at large - remains unclear to me. however, methinks the issue is a little more robust than most people are willing to consider.

should we hold people to the same standards if they have differential capacity/opportunity to achieve those standards? hell if i know. let's what something amusing:

You know, I haven't meditated in such a long time. I think I may have to do that when I get home tonight. Maybe it'll help me to finish my app.

Oops. already answered. mah peesee dunt refresh so good

Speaking of diversity, I think the schools I'm applying to need to admit more underqualified applicants 😀

👍

Schools always zero in on race as a way to improve diversity while ignoring other areas of concern. Such a disappointment.

I thought you said "medicated" at first and in Colorado that refers to medical MJ.

Heard that Coloradoans (err...Coloradans (?)) are really expanding their medical MJ industry.

There are probably at least a dozen MMJ dispensaries within a five-mile radius of my house. I like it cuz a lot of them have clever names.

People can talk about being "open-minded" all the want, but what's going to happen when a MTF pre-op transsexual comes into your office seeking medical advice? How do you refer to him/her? Does the fact that they have biggiantimplants and a penis gross you out?

I figured if I can deal with working in the hood (re: being the only asian in tha houuuuse) and the MSM crowd I can pretty much handle anything.

Paraphernalia shop here called "Twenty Past Four." I'm sure it took a few bong hits to come up with that little gem

I don't have neighbors, that's why they call it hood.

I can just picture the conversation...

Stoner 1: Dude.
Stoner 2: What.
1: I was just like, totally meditating on this sick bowl and I had, like...a revelation from God.
2: Dude.
1: You know how we're using this pipe...right now.
2: Uh...yeah! Wow.
1: Well, OTHER people...they use pipes to get lit too.
2: No way.
1: So...man, this is CRAZY...what if we had, like, a store...and we could get a whole BUNCH of pipes...and sell them...for MONEY.
2: Dude...think of how many ounces we could buy with MONEY.
1: And...no, wait...this is the best part. We could call it...wait for it...TWENTY AFTER FOUR.
2: ...
1: You know...like FOUR TWENTY.
2: ...
1: FOUR TWENTY.
2: Whoa...I just got it.
1: Dude.
2: That shiz would be DANK.
1: Dank.
2: Dude.
