Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Haha yea I had little physiology on my test too.

On a side note, starting to slightly worry about being such an "average" applicant. My ECs are below average-average as well (or at least that's what people are telling me based on this thread- http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=823792 )

:xf:

I wouldn't worry too much. Most schools hand out interviews in late November-January, so you always have time to do things starting this summer. You could just send them an update letter with all the stuff you have been doing. Are Illinois schools your top schools? They're pretty friendly to update letters, except Rush, which doesn't take them. I'm planning on sending update letters as well.

Yep, IL schools are some of my top choices. I mean, the volunteer work in the ER will still be going on until interview time.

Would you suggest doing anything else this summer to include on an update letter? Thanks!

I would definitely do some more in the teaching department. Either tutor or see if you can be a TA for a class at a local college. I think that would be pretty cool. Also, in regards to getting more clinical hours, try to volunteer at a local free clinic. There's TONS in the Chicago area, and some might even have cool opportunities such as HIV testing. Also see if you can start the baseball coach gig again (teach em to be Cubs fans 👍 ). You can check park districts as well for some volunteering as well.

That's all I have right now, but I'll think of more and let you know!

Yea, I was thinking about starting the tutoring thing back up. The baseball coach thing would be hard as it was for my brother's team when he was in HS. For clinical hours, I could prob just show up more often at my current hospital rather than going through an entirely new one. I'm not sure my app could improve much over the summer to be honest though. Thanks for your input!

Chicago has so many awesome schools man. I'm really hoping to get an interview or two up there - I hear very good things. Hopefully they are somewhat OOS-friendly...:xf:

Yea, I love basically all of them. I'm hoping that as an in-stater, I'll get at least one acceptance between Loyola, Rush, Rosalind, UIC. NW and U of C are so out of reach that I may remove one or both of them from my list.

Same. NW, while way out of reach, is my dream school 😍. You never know!

Actually, they're really OOS friendly compared to other states! You should have a good chance at Rush, UIC, RFU or Loyola. Don't apply to Southern Illinois, even most Illinois residents have a hard time getting in since they only want people from the southern part.

Yea NW is pretty amazing. Also, I'm debating whether to include SIU on my list since I am just a city boy. I mean they have to accept some people from the northern side of the state, right?

anyone else applying to Harvard know what's up with the PI letter? could use my mentor in clinical research since I don't do bench work?

Just got back from a weekend celebrating my brother's college graduation. I managed to read a whole 5 pages of Bio review over Genetics and Evolution. Didn't do any work on my PS, nor have I even touched AMCAS since last Tuesday. Still have some more LOR to request and MCAT is in like 3 weeks. FML :scared::scared::scared:

Snap out of it man! You can do this! You will do this! 👍

Did you have fun at least? 😀

Did you have fun at least? 😀

oh most definitely, stuffed my face with my mom's home cooking, totally flopped on my not drinking til after MCAT status (and promptly regretted the next day 😀) and got to hang out with my family to congratulate my bro on graduating from college. Brought all my books with me and the only actual reading that was done was when I was on the plane 🙄

back to the routine tonight though, got to make up for lost time

This reminded me of when I tried to read The Brothers Karamazov on a plane ride -- I made it to page 50. Sooo close :meanie:

Back when I was on my classics kick, there are so many books that I have started to read, but never finished. Lol. Brothers Karamazov was one as well as King Lear, Light in August, Moby Dick, etc. 😳 Maybe I'll (re)start and finish them this summer.

not much of a bookfreak are you then

Dang I feel so unsophisticated. I'm re-reading Harry Potter on my study breaks.

If it helps, I'm way into comics and mangas over actual books these days. Definitely need something that has no connotations to studying at all. Plus there's a lot of great comics out there.

Exactly. Verbal already makes me feel illiterate anyways. Don't need more of that haha

 That book is so long.

You read on your study breaks? That's crazy. During my studying, my breaks consisted of vegging out, frothing at the mouth, passing out, ya know- the usual 😀

I really want to go to a Sox game this summer since last summer I went to a Cubs game.

I'm currently reading "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." It's the first non-science book I've read in a looooong time! 😀

I'd say one out of every three readers on the bus are reading that book lol.

That's funny. A friend at work talked about the movies and thought I'd like them, and I did. Now she says I have to read the books to get the full effect of the story because the movies left out a lot. 🙂

Yea- I know nothing about any of the books/movies, but I see people reading the books allll the time.

The Millennium Series books are freaking awesome, they've been on the NY Times BSL for a while now.

The movies are really good - subtitled, but really good. I hear they are making an English version, but not sure who's in it or when they come out. The books have more detail, obviously, so I am sure they will be better (I'm not far enough into the book to say for sure 😉).

Are they geared towards women mostly? It's usually a female reading the books on the bus. I'm not really keen on chick flicks 😀.

 I wouldn't say so - definitely not a chick flick. My husband liked the movies and likes to read, so I'm sure he would read them as well.

Oh you're on my **** list now. I might just spike your juice at an interview. Watch out.:meanie:

Lol- do you do that to everyone on your **** list? Should adcoms expect a large amount of intoxicated pre-meds at interviews? "But, sir, I just drank the juicy-juice 🙁".

 I lied, I'm not a mean person, I promise. Being a White Sox fan would be torture enough, no need for me to inflict any more. 🙂

I've also been wanting to read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Maybe I'll pick it up at the end of studying today 🙂

Sick for the second time in two months, couldn't study at all yesterday. Feel like crap and still have to get through bio review, why is this happening to me 🙁 .

not much of a bookfreak are you then

 I was when I made this account. Not so much now. 🙁

Dang I feel so unsophisticated. I'm re-reading Harry Potter on my study breaks.

After ABC showed the first 5 HP movies this past weekend, I'm itching to re-read the books. I haven't re-read them since I finished the 7th book back in 2007. :lame:

If it helps, I'm way into comics and mangas over actual books these days. Definitely need something that has no connotations to studying at all. Plus there's a lot of great comics out there.

Yay! Which ones do you read?

if it helps I don't read :meanie:

On a different note, it's almost time for AMCAS submission!

Oh, a fellow manga reader awesome!

Well there are the staples like Naruto and Bleach, but I've been getting into these other mangas like Deadman Wonderland, Dogs: Bullets and Carnage, Toriko, Fairy Tail. They're all pretty awesome if you like Shounen. OMG, I sound like a total nerd now 😳

what do you read?

can someone riddle me this:

I'm looking through MDApps and people received interviews/secondaries from schools that screen before their committee letter was sent in...?

example:
http://mdapplicants.com/profile.php?id=19931

UNC screens secondaries, and if you get the secondary it's an automatic interview invite..I thought you had to have the committee letter before you were complete?

You do. Something's wrong with the MDapp.

My brother reads Naruto and One Piece. He gave up on Bleach for some mysterious reason. lol. I read romance mangas (hey, I am a girl)! 😀 Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge, Kaichou wa Maid-Sama, Dengeki Daisy (favorite right now), the list goes on. I actually wanted to read Fairy Tail, is it good? The animes that I have watched, on the other hand, are all over the place genre-wise.

Complete = secondary + supporting documents received.

So, if UNC screens the primaries to award secondaries, then it makes sense for this applicant to receive a secondary and submit his supporting documents (committee letter) afterwards.

Mayo does this too, although secondary =/= automatic interview. They screen and if they invite you to fill out the secondary, then they request for your LORs/CL, etc.

Ok so what you're saying is they only review the stuff on your primary? (Gpa, MCAT, PS, activities, etc?). LOR's IMO are huge, I might use interfolio and ask some of my letter writers to submit to that so I will have something on file when my primary is reviewed...what your saying makes the most sense to me

That's what I think. UCs do this too (sadly). They look at your primary application and if they like it, they'll give you a secondary and request your LORs/CL.

I was going to email the admissions lady for a question I had, I'm going to go ahead and confirm this with her...I'll let you know what she says.

Cool. If I'm right, then you can submit earlier (to UNC at least) instead of waiting on your committee letter. 😀
