Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My PS is the only thing I obsessed about. My activity descriptions were written pretty quickly and lightly edited.

Hahaha, I guess that's alright. However... considering HOW long the adcom will spend with your app... maybe skim over the PS... read your activities descriptions even faster and then look at your GPAs and MCAT scores to see if you're gonna survive the pre-clinical education.. I'd say maybe 10-15 minutes per app.

The volume of applications they receive... there's no other way to do it. They have to quick and efficient. Which is why I bullet pointed my activities descriptions. Instead of long drawn out paragraphs.

When I met with that adcom way back when... he didn't really read over my descriptions. Not at all actually, he read the titles and the category it was under.

"I see you've got leadership, volunteerism, teaching etc. Great. You're all set"

That cat is absolutely hilarious.

What is up with our c/o 2016 obsession with felines?

Question: Should Asian Cat invite all of the MD students in his class to his wedding?

I just ranted HARD on the Which Caribbean medical schools to apply to.

I love how people denigrate the Caribbean immediately. Most of it is uninformed and just ridiculous.

Are you applying Caribbean, CodeBlu?

No I am not. I just think people need to stop thinking they are god's gift to the world.

If I didn't have any other option, I wouldn't necessarily hesitate to apply to a Caribbean school.

I think people need to be more tolerant and understanding.

I don't think it's so much a matter of hubris as it is one of good judgment. The plain and simple truth is that I am more likely to match favorably getting my MD in the U.S. than if I matriculate in the Caribbean. Whether this is due to discrepancy in educational quality or to a disparity in the credentials of the average incoming student is quite irrelevant. I'd be foolish to go Caribbean if I had the option of going domestic. Don't blame the students - they're just playing by the rules set forth by residency directors.

The statement that you would apply "if I didn't have any other option" suggests that you yourself regard the Carib as a worst-case scenario. Does this make you haughty? No. It makes you reasonable. Numerically, your typical Carib enrollee is not on par with your typical U.S. enrollee. Unless you can demonstrate that the quality of instruction at St. George is vastly superior to that of a U.S. institution, you're not going to convince me that a middling student in the Carib will be equally qualified to practice medicine as his or her counterpart Stateside. If this is prejudiced, then it is prejudiced not to admit students with a GPA of 1.5 or MCAT scores of 12. The prejudice serves a purpose.

I do agree that a standout med student in the Carib - one who excels in his or her studies, accrues invaluable experience, and performs well on the USMLE - would probably make an excellent physician and should be given due consideration. But by definition, not everyone can be top of his/her class. What of the bottom 50% of a Carib class? Are they really comparable to the bottom 50% at Harvard?

**** I would never apply Carib, especially for what I want to do ( NSG)...matching is impossible (not impossible but VERY difficult) in a competitive specialty and the education quality is crap...let's not kid ourselves here

Easy guys. I'm just saying there are people who go Caribbean and do just fine.

It's a last ditch option for the people who go down there.

Right, but you really have to excel to "do just fine." I'm just playing the odds. It would be amazing to beach it up for 4 years, though.

I submitted!!! :soexcited:

Congrats!! 😀 👍👍

Secondaries aren't really that bad. Just don't obsess over them. It's pointless to do so. My mantra with those things... write honestly, and edit for grammar.

I have to do some secondaries. 🙁 I did one, because it was Rochester's and they don't have any essay questions--optional or otherwise.

I'd much rather go to a US DO school than a Caribbean school for MD. I would hate spending all that money on four years of medical school only to NOT get a US residency.

No kidding... Salty was annoying.

In the EK physics book they gave an example of "a cat sitting on a board in the middle of a frozen, frictionless lake," and when you turned the page to see the diagram, bam! Picture of a mountain lion on a board in the middle of a frozen lake.
