Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This thread moves so fast I don't even realize when we're approaching top or bottom anymore

Yeah, this thread is way too post-padded and fast-moving, I can't keep track of where we are or what we're talking about (if anything).

If I were to dissect our class thread, I'd say it would be something like this:

30% Food Pics
25% TWSS
15% TOP! (or TOP! attempts)
10% Futurama
10% CodeBlu flirting
10% Other spam, especially from bookfreak and WYS
<1% Serious Business

Hahahaha, very true.

A solid analysis

When is a good time to worry about not having a single interview?

Gotta love dependent pre-meds. Who would've thought so many future doctors didn't even know how to organize their own class schedules, or even how to study. Some of the questions people ask. I understand if you are struggling and need some advice, but the amount of people that post these ridiculous questions is what gives so many people on SDN bad attitudes and why we all have a trigger finger towards trolls.

I remember asking this question last February

Lol, seriously though, basically every school I applied to has offered interviews and I haven't gotten any. I hope I didn't fudge my e-mail or something.

I believe most schools are doing EDP interviews right now. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

It's okay, that means even if I get a single interview this cycle I'm doing better than last year. 😀

That's true. Maybe if you didn't down-talk the state of Michigan so much...

In all honesty I'd take an interview from just about anywhere.

Ooh, I hope I didn't mess up my email, either. I'm not even verified yet though.

I can't believe you didn't get any interviews, your app looks pretty good from what I see on your MDApps. Did you retake the mcat since then or something?

Well, I met with a half dozen AdCom members from various schools and the two most frequently mentioned flaws were downward grade trend and poorly presented application. I've since learned how to 'play the game' (or so I think).

Hmmmm, so "poorly presented application" was a bad PS (or bad activity descriptions?). People kept telling me not to worry about the PS...

Hmm. My PS is very humble, I don't know if it's a good thing or not. I think that the level of writing was the best that I could do and I didn't go crazy on mentioning my qualities, but I moreso tried to mention the types of things I took out of my activities. My activities were very regular EC's, but hopefully the lessons I learned from them were refreshing and unique enough to catch someone's eye.

So I just changed my SDN email from the email I used on my app to another account I have. With that other account, I had sent my PS to someone on SDN to edit, but forgot, and just read their comments today (after I submitted 1.5 weeks ago). In one part they mentioned "saying this once is cliche, but when you mention it again it's just suicide." Great. Now I feel like I effed up my PS.

Yeah it was probably some combination of the two. Here's how they described the importance of the PS:

Imagine a very narrow standard distribution, with the peak representing 'does nothing for your application' and occuppies ~90% of applicants. The tails represent the population where the PS actually matters. So, generally speaking the PS doesn't really matter if you just make it like everyone else's (play it safe). My mistake was making it too unorthodox and hardly addressing 'why medicine' which pushed me into the unfavorable population.

That's a good analogy. So I guess taking a risk can put you in either tail of the distribution. I pretty much played it safe.

Naw. I think the really bad ones are the ones where people claim, "this will make me a great doctor" or the ones where they act like their sprained ankle was such a catastrophe and the amazing b.a. docs saved their lives. I think those ones are the ones that I would say people effed up. Not every sentence in your PS is going to be 100% spot on perfect. There has to be cliche, 50k people apply a year, you're going to have stuff repeated.

Yeah, it was really hard to not say "I like to help people," because, well, that's one of the reasons I want to go into medicine. Hopefully I demonstrated that, along with just saying it.

I think that's better than a sentence like, "Dr. Awesomeness's self sacrifice and dedication to my treatment propelled my interests in medicine"

That's garbage, dude is getting paid to treat you, sure he probably cared and made you feel special, but he is getting paid so much.

It's funny because it always happens at night when I'm sleeping, I wake up in the morning and there are 5 new pages to go through.

What better way to accompany your morning cup of coffee than to go through a few pages of SDN spam?
