Oh no, I am not that competitive at school - in fact I love helping my peers and it makes me happy when they do well 🙂 I am mostly competitive with myself...

That sounds intense! Hopefully the environment is somewhat collaborative and not totally cut throat.
 
Personally, I think all med schools should have a P/F for the first two years.

It's just a little more stress that's not necessary imo. Different strokes for different folks, but I'm very happy my chosen school is p/f as one of the many pro's to consider.

awww for real, the close friend of mine that i told you about who's an M2 at VCU went through the same song and dance I did of experiencing M1 year elsewhere in a truly cutthroat environment. he seemed SO happy compared to the M1s where we were. 🙂

aw noooo seriously db, vcu is one of the last places i would be scared about attending. the resident i work with who graduated from there was a total sweetheart. people in his year are from top 10 schools. he holds his own, but isn't a gunner at all. I feel like his stories combined with the anecdotal evidence from my friend who's a current student portray vcu as a really down-to-earth, supportive school.

Out of curiosity, why was it your top choice going into this process?

agree....it can definitely cause a tiny bit of grief, but ultimately i think things start to calm down after the first couple of months as people settle into their grooves. and that isn't just for H/HP/P/F, either.

No question, but I feel terrible for the people who only get accepted to a school(s) like that and have no choice.

The LCME should require those schools to keep things like this on hand for the added stress relief that is needed:

aw, i wouldn't feel terrible about it. i'd be damn grateful to go to med school!

I was really not worried about VCU being competitive, I was more worried in case I end up going at another school that has more cut throat environment...

As far as VCU being my top choice...where do I begin? 🙂 it's just an amazing school. It has multiple prestigious hospitals within walking distance, faculty and students are great, lots of resources available including simulation training, standardized pts, research, etc. Overall, VCU provides excellent clinical experience and education which leads to their great match rate. I also love Richmond; it is a very historic city with a diverse population, great food, cobblestone streets, etc.

Also, I did extensive research on it for the secondary application and from speaking with students, reading online, etc, I was convinced that VCU has a very supportive and collaborative environment - which really fits my personality. So naturally, I fell in love with it, and after my interview visit - I just knew this would be an ideal school for me. Simply, it felt right.

But anyway, I can go on and on about it :laugh: What is your top choice?

Lol, me - a gunner? These two don't even go in the same sentence :laugh:

On a second thought, according to SDN definition...I do have a higher gpa than you, so I might be a gunner after all. But then, you have a higher MCAT, so you must be a gunner too:laugh:
