For a second I was like 2 girls???? who????? I promise once the MCAT is over I will have more brain space. 😳
This reminds me of my politically incorrect way of remembering the difference of a ligament and a tendon.
Ligament - Bone to Bone
Yeah, I definitely hear that...
Why does people dying in a hurricane make for good personal statement fodder? 😕
Clearly I'm tired enough that I've gone insane. Science does not work that way. Good night!
LOL Tots I <3 your mnemonic for ligaments. Kangaroo Paw approves of this messages.
Also, is it weird that when I saw someone say "crickets chirp" I immediately thought "rickets", immediately thinking of a calcium deficiency in bones, and a low mineral😳rganic matter ratio in the hydroxyapatite matrix? Methinks the MCAT is getting to me 😱
My favorite mnemonic EVER in the world is "Hold da FON" for hydrogen bonding. Except, it's not hold the phone, it's "Hold da FON" in a Jamaican accent. FON= Fluorine/Oxygen/Nitrogen. I love it so much that I literally think it in a Jamaican accent in my head every time I think of hydrogen bonding. Which happens about two-three times per practice MCAT.
Another good one is Whack'em and Giggle for f= 1/2pi radical k/m for springs and f=1/2pi radical g/L for pendulums.
Night, all!
I slept until like, 10:15 today. Mostly your fault, guys. 😛
Weak. I went to bed after you and was up before you 😛
I know, I get overtired so easy! haha. Also I took loads of caffeine yesterday. 😱
I dunno what to do today. I guess get hurricaned in and start packing for school. What are you up to? 😛
Don't die! I should be studying but am instead watching TVs. Yay.
When does school start for you?
Wednesday is move-in, Thursday classes start. Unless we lose power for a few weeks.
I fear I've lost my EK verbal book. I was trying to find it because I swear it had math review for physics, too. Oh well. I'll look for it later.
Yeah, it does have a section like that. 🙂
Watching anything good?
I think I'm taking AAMC 10 today even though I didn't review AAMC 9, because of the incoming power outages/lack of WiFi coming my way. Ahhhhh so not ready for this![]()
I felt like a total stalker. First I was stalking you guys. 😳
Then I was stalking NYC!
Yeah, don't die. Patients need you!

OK everyone, I need some help. This is a dumb question, but how the hell do I get really well acquainted with my profs to the point where they can write me good rec letters? I have talked with teachers a lot about their own course material, and a few know me pretty well, but they don't know me beyond my academic side. How do I get them to know me beyond being a student? And don't say join their lab. I tried for a few and the spots filled up because of other folks that were faster.

Well, whenever I want to talk about myself, I always ask about that person's interest/life story. Normally if you're really good with people, you'll already know their interests, and ask them about it. They won't stop talking, and in the end result, will love you. Also, because you asked them about themselves, they'll ask you about you..and here is where you can include details of your plans, what you're doing for volunteering, e.t.c
I don't know whether that was helpful or not.
Hello C/O of 2017.
I have not had letters written from science professors yet but I have had 3 science professors offer to write me letters. All three offered to write letters based off my academic performance in their classes and as such the "get to know me" usually occurred after.
For one professor I stopped by officer hours when I was taking his upper division course(after he offered a LOR from my performance in his LD course) and I simply explained to him that I would most likely request a letter in a year and I asked him if I was on track and what he would need from me. He provided me with checklist and 2 pages of instructions on what he required for LORs but then also asked me what I was involved in and what my interests were. Moral of the story: I think if you let professors know that you are interested in procuring a letter from them then they will be more interested in you and your motivations. Obviously most professors are really busy and you are their student so I wouldn't expect to have a buddy buddy relationship with your professors but I think most of them could write strong letters based off your academic performance and professional interactions with them.
For my second professor, she commented on my academic performance in her class and offered to write me a letter. I replied by professing my interest in the subject she was teaching(genuinely) and explaining how that helped me to do well. I also linked resources that helped me and might be of help to future students. In response she told me to stop by her office hours sometime so I can introduce myself because she likes to understand the passions of her students.
In the end I think it is a combination of finding the right professors, being upfront and expressing intellectual curiosity. From what you said, I think you are good on the intellectual curiosity part but I would try letting them know you will likely be looking for a letter of req and see how that goes.
TL;DR: The "get to know me phase" usually occurred after the LORs were on the table so be upfront.
I recommend "How to Make Friends & Influence People"
Soo do you guys think I should get the ipad 2? I want to use it for the internet and mainly doing homework..I was thinking of buying a keyboard with it and a stylus so I can take notes with it in class..or should I just opt for a plain old macbook? (even though I'll have to wait to get the money for that)
How bad is it that I'm finding my rl friends to be annoying after talking to you guys...? 😛

If anyone wants a reading recommendation then I encourage you to read "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down"
If you don't read or don't think you can get through it then I implore you to at least read chapter 18 when you are in a bookstore sometime. The chapter pretty much summarizes the whole humanism in medicine debate.
Because we're all smart, ambitious young students who know what they want! 😀
Not that bad. I don't have enough friends irl, so I'm already sentimentally attached to you guys. 😍
Oooh, sounds interesting. I'll place it on my "to read" list next summer. Currently have to finish The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by McCullers, and The Plague by Camus. I've been meaning to read Cutting for Stone forever. And more Russian novels. I wish I had more time to read. lol.
