Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone! I'm a new pre-med student, although I'm a senior. I was unsure about what career I wanted to pursue until I decided to volunteer at a Children's Hospital. I'm really nervous and confused about all of this application process, but excited at the same time. 🙂

You can ask any questions you have here. Unlike the rest of the forums, we won't flame you for asking the difference between MD and DO 😀

Wow, thank you for the warm welcome! 🙂 I do have several questions, so if you reply, I'll be very grateful.

1). When do you normally send your primary application in? I want to take the MCAT next August (the summer after i graduate) and I'm a bit confused about this. I'm also unsure about how secondaries work...do they send it to you after you send your MCAT score?

2). When would be the ideal time to ask your professors about letters of recommendation?

3). When should I start writing my Personal Statement?

- The application system known as Amcas usually opens anywhere form May or June 1st. I am not too sure but it is within those time frames. So taking the mcat on August would be a little late since your scores wont be back till September. However, you can always submit your application without the mcat scores available yet. schools won't process it until your scores are submitted. I would advise you take the mcat anywhere from January till April of next year so you can submit your application early as possible. the earlier the better.

-Your primary app needs to be processed before you get your secondaries and that means your mcat scores are already in.

2). When would be the ideal time to ask your professors about letters of recommendation?

Anywhere from now till The summer of next year. Depending on how early you want to submit you app but ideally, try and get them before or early during the app cycle.
3). When should I start writing my Personal Statement?

Again, anywhere form now until app cycle starts. it all depends on you. if you can do it now, then go ahead but people usually start writing them close to when the app cycle opens. I hope that answers your questions. if you have more, ask away Good luck !!🙂

You can start writing and revising your PS right now if you wanted. The LOR writers may ask for a draft of it. You should start asking professors now if you know them well enough, but definitely by beginning of next semester. As for applying, the application opens in June so you can send in your primaries then. I believe they put your app on hold until they receive your MCAT scores (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and you get secondaries after your app is verified.

Hey tman, how are your classes going?🙂

Classes have just been lots of reading and hws so far. My 3 humanities classes combined gave about 3-400 pages of readings per week. I almost don't have time to finish 😛 Also have to put in quite a bit of time for TAing, clubs, and soon volunteering as well. I've fallen behind on the physics 2 readings, but MCAT prep gave me a good foundation. Almost time to go TA a class, haha. How about you?

You guys are very helpful, thanks! 😀

One more question...I'm planning on taking my last prerequisite classes next semester (Physics 2 and Inorganic Chem 2) and I don't know if it'll be possible to study for the MCAT AND study for these classes at the same time! How do you guys do it?!

Seems like you'll have chem 2 and phy2 fresh in your head while you study so you could concentrate mainly on the other subjects. I wouldn't recommend studying hardcore while taking classes, though. Some people can do it, but others cannot. I'm sure you can determine which type you are. I for one cannot 😛

do you guys tutor? how do you tutor? under the school? or independently? do you charge?

Someone told me I need to take a stats class for a few schools in texas...i was upset to say the least. I'll have tot alk it over with my adviser.

yeah (looking at my handy dandy school spreadsheet) most med schools require stats now, and make calc II a 'recommended' thing..SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS 😍

f*ck math!

I will never take calc 2, stats is as far as I go 🙂

I already took calc 2 but I don't want to take stats...=(

They stay our Applied Stats course is very easy on campus and that its fun. I kind of look forward to taking that course. GPA booster 😀

I feel like I wouldn't do as well in the MCAT if I was taking those to classes. I might do it, but I'm not very confident in my abilities. I graduate in May, so I might be able to take the exam in July, which shouldn't be too bad, right?

And yeah, I hate math classes. I'm not applying to any school that requires calculus.

I've been thinking about tutoring OChem or Math. I just don't know if I have the time or patience for it. BAhh so many things to do, so little time :/

I tutor for the school. I basically lead supplementary discussion sections for about 3 groups of 8 students each. Lovely 13$ an hour.

I don't know if you heard but LARC got cut big time and no longer offers Ochem tutoring and only offers very limited math tutoring.

oh. well i can tutor for my college under like a 'class', so it's for free to the people who use my service. i didn't know about this until this semester 🙁 wish I knew this sooner!! 🙁 🙁 ugh so going to do it next semester..i'll have at least like, a year and a half under my belt. 😛

I also tutored for units but I don't think it was as rewarding. Since it was drop in I didn't build relationships with my tutees and as such I wasn't able to give them as much help as they could have used. A lot of people showed up simply for answers or at the VERY last minute and expected me to be able to fix all the problems they were having in Ochem. It had some pluses but I think having paid tutees generally produces a better outcome for the tutee. They have more motivation to show up and at least sort of pay attention. Getting them there is half the battle, many students just need to spend more time with the material.

Yeah I got that distressed email, I guess that's a bonus for me since more people will be looking for those tutors, huh? Adding that to the pro side of the pros and cons list [:

Yes! If you want to private tutor Ochem there should be lots of opportunities!

How did my fellow 2017ers do on the MCAT? I knew a lot of you were taking it last month.

Really? A class of 2017?

You are a true pre-med now. It's totally normal.

👍👍

On that note, I just realized I don't know how to quote more than one person in a post. I didn't realize I was still interwebz-challenged, but hey.😕

Next to "Quote" there is a box with "+ for multiquote. Click everyone's post that you want to quote. When you are ready to make your post, click "Post" and do your thing!
