Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you still considering the year off? I'm just curious as I study for my MCAT.

I believe I will be taking a year. When I laid out the pros and cons, it wasn't even close. Definitely would be more beneficial for my future application to take a year off.

It was nice knowing you Bauman1535  You can watch us this cycle and learn from out mistakes 😀

Oh Class of 2017, I call upon you to solve the ultimate dilemma. Should I or should not push my 04/05 MCAT date to 04/13??

Pros:
- One more week to study! I'm not gonna lie, I'm a bit behind and am cramming a few [unimportant] sections in
- On a friday, which means 1) I'll get to relax through the weekend right away (instead of thursday), and 2) I'll only be missing one lecture 2nd week of school (instead of 2 classes the first week)
- 45mn drive, average traffic instead of 1hr drive massive traffic. (Although you never really know how traffic will work out around here...)

Cons:
- I want to get it over with NOW.
- It's at 8am. I'm not much of a morning person and I've been practicing around 1pm.
- Two weeks into spring quarter not concentrating on school as much.
- $70 fee to change

Help meeeee :scared:

I would stick with 4/04. The farther into a quarter, even by 1 week generally means the busier I am. Don't worry about the traffic, you should be planning to get there pretty early anyways. You can relax on Thursday - it will be week 1! Also taking the test at 8 am when you are not prepared would probably suck. I know I woke up at 6 am every day for 2 months but maybe that is just me.

A) isn't the 4/05 on Easter weekend, so you should have free anyways?
B) really depends on how you are doing on your practice tests and how you wanna do, I think. If you aren't there yet, then the change my be good.
C) personally, one week vs two week into a semester don't seem too different to me. It shouldnt take that much to make up for them.

Yeah that was the other thing I was think about. With 1 pm I can get there at whatever time in the morning. With 8... well I'm not going to wake up at some ridic time to be there early...

Nope, it's our first week of school.
I don't know how I'm doing yet but that's a good idea. I'll base it on that.
My school is on quarter system and some midterms already come in week 4 so, yeah 2 weeks behind is not good.

Thanks guys. I'll keep it in place.. until further notice. This thing is stressing me out too much -__-"

Quickly I would take it earlier to not get behind.

But my main question is this, how many places are you all applying to this time?

Anyone have a rough estimation of the timeline of a typical publication?
I'll be submitting a manuscript in the near future and was hoping to see my work in print by the time interviews begin next year.

Lastly, is listing a submitted manuscript on the AMCAS worth anything? :/

Good luck with finals everyone! Finish strong. 🙂

1st Author (Submitted) or (Under Review) would look fine. It might come up in an interview, so if its 4-6 months after your AMCAS, they might ask where it is. Even if it doesn't get published, its fine.
If its a solid paper and you have all the data the reviewer wants, it would be published in ~2 months. But often the reviewer wants additional information, experiments, controls, etc. If you're lucky, you already did the experiments.

So I met with the one of the admissions folk at my #1 today (I'm a M.S. student at a medical school). He was really straightforward, told me I might have a shot at some MD schools and to apply, but I'd be a better candidate for DO. (I have a sub-3.00 undergraduate GPA). He offerred to look over my PS before I submit it 🙂D), and told me to contact him when I apply and he'll talk to the application reviewers so I don't get auto-screened.

That's an awesome connection to have!

LUCKY. I have 13 weeks until I graduate from college :scared:
Crazy!
I'm already making that face thinking about my grad.. next year XD Just all those applications saying I'm going to be a senior in 2012-13 feels weird.

And is it seriously 13 weeks? Arrghhh quarter system whyyyy

So i decided to do my ochem 1 lab during the summer while TA'ing and studying for the MCAT.

I need to see how much time dedication is needed for TA'ing...hopefully i can just have office hours and that's it :meanie:

Yeah I was surprised at how easy it was to ask profs
I have 4 done but they are all non-science or my PI.

Yea i know -when i went to ask they seemed happy and told me they are going to write a very good one.... i was like... right on! lmao
i don't have any non-science

I have 2 science, 1 MD, 1 from SR project manager of company.

Oh goodness, I feel so behind. 🙁

yea man better get it over with so you don't have to scramble at the end. Also, LOR writers take some time, i gave mine a few months so they can take their time writing it - i asked in the beginning of the semester.

My science ones want to wait until May and they both will only submit directly to AMCAS and no letter service

Wise words. Thanks for the reality check. 🙂

That's weird. I just receive mine via interfolio which then obv send it off to the app services

Hey, do you mind giving a breakdown of how the interfolio service works? As far as the process of getting the letters, the costs, the length of time you have access, etc? Thanks a lot

Ok well before I do anything I make a packet of information explaining everything etc. I also choose to have the letter writers send the letters physically.

On interfolio i print out a letter of recommendation form which has a code to file it once sent.
The letter writers sends the letter and interfolio form and it stores it confidentially on interfolio. From there you can send it off to the app service.

I paid around $20 for about 3 months i believe? Also for each send its about $6 but this can include all letters at a time. Overall this is a nightly process if sending electronically, and the letters are sent/received pretty fast
