Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there are no professors i am in contact with. i am the independent class-skipper type, so i didn't really go to office hours at all. i hope it works out. i will just tell them that it's my dream to go to med school...hopefully that will evoke some sympathy.

May 12th seems like it's coming too soon. With each passing day, I fear the MCAT more and more.

Such a busy semester...finally going to start spring break!

My first ever post! Amazing 🙂 Anyone else counting down whilst also dreading the quickly approaching 1st of June?

So bummed out that spring break will be ending soon. I think I slept more this past week than I had this past quarter. 😳

Ditto got 10hrs of sleep every single day 🙂

I've been working out a lot more, which is helping me handle this stress.
My grades are out, gpa went up by 0.1. That was... sad.
MCAT is... yeah. Soon.
I'm tired. I would say I can't wait for summer, but I'm taking summer school + application. Even though I'm seriously starting to reconsider applying this year....... but I didn't say that aloud.

I swear all I do is rant these days. I'm (/was?) a happy person, I swear! XD

Up! They went up! don't be sad! Up is nothing to laugh at....

Tots, I was stalking your mdapps, admiring your MCAT score when all of a sudden I saw you are in Phi Beta Kappa... I recently got an invitation. Should I accept it? Have you experience any benefits?

PS: I am already in a honor's frat.

I could have asked this on our FB group but I am too lazy to log on now 😀

Yes. Phi Beta Kappa is one of the most prestigious honor societies. IMHO its probably the only one worth joining. Doooo It!

So I was thinking about my letters of rec. for this cycle and I wanted to get you guy's opinion.

1. Medical Microbiology Prof. - knows me decently well, will get and A in the class (will obviously have to wait to ask until May though; does that matter?)

2. Cellular Mycology Prof - mentor for 4 years (not like research or anything, just my departmental adviser), knows me really well. Will get an A in the class (again will have to wait till May). British (not sure if it matters; I've heard they can be "brutally honest" with LORs).

3. Human Physiology Prof. - Doesn't know me well at all, got an A in the class already (so could ask anytime as opposed to waiting till May).

I have 1 Science LOR already which is VERY strong (Physics), not really sure if 3 would be beneficial looking at most schools requirements. What do you guys think?

Does your school have a committee? If not I would aim for 2 science, 1 non science and then maybe a research letter or something else if it will add something. Out of the above I think #2 would be the best bet. If your concerned about his brutal honesty make sure to ask if he can write you a strong letter of recommendation and see how he responds. If he is anything but ecstatic about sending the letter than I would find someone else. I don't think may is a big deal, remember schools won't get your application until the end of June at the earliest.

No committee 🙁

Yeah I just don't want professors to feel rushed, but I guess with May it still gives them a month, I think I'll probably go with 2 and if he seems less than ecstatic I'll try 1.

I have 2 other letters from an MD and a DO who both know me pretty well and will write decently strong letters.

Non-science would be tough for me to get, honestly I don't even remember the last non-science class I took, so I'm not sure that professor would even be able to say anything particularly interesting about me. I think I will probably end up applying to only schools that don't require one.

Hello! Welcome aboard!

I have a committee letter from my school. Should I ask just the science professors or ask some humanities too?

Quickly I would take it earlier to not get behind.

But my main question is this, how many places are you all applying to this time?

I am applying to ~20...applying broadly and in MD and DO... Several physicians that I have shadowed have told me to go to the least expensive school I get into then work for w great residency, that it is in residency that you really learn to practice medicine

Gahh! The idea that it's so close to June now makes me super nervous/excited.

Anyone else still working on their PS?
I'm about to finish my first draft (FINALLY) and contrary to most I'm having a hard time just fitting all the reasons for 'why medicine' down. There's just not enough space for me to tell a story AND give definitive reasons + examples (there's also the fact that I'm not very good with being a succinct writer haha) 🙁.

I started on a "draft", but that was primary because the premed committee required one for their them to write my letter. Its definitely that hardest 1 page essay, I've ever written.

I would do whatever your committee recommends/requires.

Remember that you have space in your activities to describe why certain things are meaningful so don't feel like you have to touch on EVERYTHING in the PS. I cut out like 1/3 of what was going on in my PS just to improve flow and made this more apparent 1 of my most meaningful essays.

If you want a pre-lim edit we have a PS reader list in the FB group. Since we are all applicants we might not be the best people to read it though. The real PS reader list should be coming online shortly. (maybe tomorrow?)

So there's a FB page??

Yes...and for some reason I am admin. Message me.

Same here, now I have to go back and revise some more... There is just too much to say lol

Oh my bad I put 0.1, I meant 0.01. I would have def been happy if it was 0.1!

But I've kinda shaken out of it. Up is indeed better than down 🙂

That's me too. I love detail! I spent a lot of time on mine and rewrote it 4 times until there was a draft I thought was fairly decent. From then, you just revise revise revise and get a bunch of your friends to read it. They'll have a better grasp on what's needed. You have lots of time to perfect it. Good luck!

I still haven't even started, so busy with schoolwork.

But I'm also excited for June!

Most of my LOR writers have no idea what a good MCAT score is....If I told them I got a 10 total they probably would haver been like "CONGRATULATIONS!"

Ahhh lucky. My advisor writes/compiles the committee letter. But he wont start till I get a good score.

Harsh. Do you even know what he considers to be "good enough"?

would you guys start hospital volunteering now if you had 1.3 years of free clinic experience and 70 hrs shadowing? i am unsure if i should do more clinical stuff...

Yeah, a 29.

If I wanted to and liked what I was doing, yeah, I would.
If doing it to impress Med schools, I think you're good.

Read The Hunger Games trilogy in the past couple of days and started watching Community...Just trying to relax during spring break before all hell breaks loose afterwards!
