Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That is a very interesting system. Good luck! Hopefully you'll be back with your family and the rain in no time 🙂

Good morning everyone!

I stayed up watching vampire shows last night... got up a bit later than expected, had to skip meditation. Oh well...

It is an interesting system, but it must work considering the rank of the school.

The good thing about it is that most schools have like 2-3 hospitals that clinical years are done at. UW has like 300 throughout the five states of WWAMI. That means students get to do and learn a lot more things (that's the plan at least). Their mission is to also get people to work in underserved areas or populations and they definitely put students in those situations a lot through this.

I am hoping to do some clinical work up in Alaska for a few weeks in third or fourth year just so I can get fresh crab, salmon, see the land, etc. Plus the school pays for lodging and airfare when you go somewhere far from the school... Free vacation?

Anyone ever notice that the flame princess...HAS NO HANDS!? Creepy...

Don't laugh at her. She is a burn victim. She lost her hands in her last fire accident. In fact, she has been on fire for the last few months and nobody has put it out!

:flame:

 Touche, mein freund.

P.S. Is anyone else freaked out about withdrawing all but one acceptance? As if somehting were to happen with your top choice and you'd have no backup? I'm probably going to hang on to one other school until 5/15. I wish I could hold it all the way up to matriculation. I'm so paranoid! LoL

I agree.

I totally understand. I finally withdrew from all the other schools yesterday! It will hopefully open some seats for folks waiting. It felt a bit unsettleting at first (the mind is a creative friend) but it now feels really good. 😀

Yeah, I was freaked about that when I had to withdraw acceptances. Paranoid that somehow the one I chose would back out or something. Lol
One nice thing about DO schools, I made all those tough choices back in October!!

Sounds awesome, one of my friends was assigned to work in Alaska for our fellowship. She goes ice fishing and camping often!

Yes, it seems that UW is big on working with the underserved. I really like their mission & focus.

Anybody else think there should be SDN merch? I would totally buy a t-shirt.
I almost started a business with them making T-shirts. They even offered to put in most of the start-up capital. But I just didn't have the time to devote to it. Maybe I should start back up. I'll start a poll and re-hash the effort if there's enough interest.

Cue sexism cries I don't know man.. chicks tend to not be able to step away and just live, simply.

But yea.. not interested in the marriage... we'll see what the late 30s or 40s look like.

My wife is definitely the one to save and live more simply. If not for her, our budget would be nonexistent!

If we were to take out the full COA loans allowed, by the end of residency (assuming no payments) we would be $440k in the hole just from med school. :wow:
Granted, we can certainly make payments during residency. We have been known to make ends meet on just $20k annually, although that was before our daughter...

Hoping Uncle Sam will pay for mine. Come on HPSP!!

I just found out I'm getting commissioned in the AF for the HPSP this Thursday! Good luck

Haven't seen it yet, but I bet it isn't nearly as intense as the comic. The more I see the show, the more I wish it was on a premium cable channel. Could've been so much better.

An HBO walking dead would have been the.greatest.show.ever. I miss the comic. I have not read an issue for about a year.

Yeah, I felt super weird withdrawing. You spend so much time trying to get acceptances, it's weird turning them down.

My ex was good with a budget. Now that I'm single again finding someone who can stretch a dollar is definitely at the top of the list.

Congrats dude. I want to go in again so bad.

😡 Well exSCUSE me for doing a little online shopping to pass the time at home watching YOUR progeny while you live it up at your fancy-pants job 🙄

Online shopping can be awesome, all the great deals on margarita kits!

Lets trade places then. You go to work, ill sit home and watch the kids. I give it a week 😛.

In the lab I work in, we have four heaters. Only one has a functioning heater and stirrer. The other three have either the heater or stirrer broken.

Our autoclave also broke last week and depressurizes too quickly and causes us to lose media.

First world problems.

Haha still more than I make. My paycheck is usually gone the day I get it, it's depressing. I hate bills 🙁

Yeah that's just about what I make, but I live in a stupid city (that I love... Because I am also stupid) where my rent swallows an entire paycheck in one ungrateful gulp.

Damn, bro +1 on both accounts: ~$2500 brought home once a month. Ya'll don't even wanna know my gross. 😳

Haha well, at least we're all in this together 👍

Seriously though, I can't wait til financial aid money kicks in. I don't mind living on a budget, but not having to really think about money constantly will be nice.

ALSO this is a total long shot and a personal plug but does anyone here currently live in San Francisco? I'm currently debating whether I'm going to move out there for school or not and a big consideration for me is my SO (I'll probably post this question in the school specific discussions at some point because the choice I have to make by May 15 is eating away at me!!).

Anyway, if we move out there he'll have to find a job and obviously it's preferable to have something lined up by the time I have to start school and pay rent. Does ANYONE have a health related job (he's applying to med school in the future also) that they or a friend is giving up to go to school this year in SF? Or know of how to best look for hospital jobs in this city?

I would greatly appreciate anyone's help and advice. Y'all know how stressful this thing is and I'd like to make both mine and his decisions as easy as humanly possible 🙂 thanks guys! 😍

I live in the city of San Francisco, going on 5 years.

Assuming you have a full time job in the city, will they be looking for your replacement come July or August? 🙂

It is possible, I have not spoken with my P.I. about it yet. However, I can PM you a link that has all the job position posting for UCSF.

If he can live off of ~35k, tell him to try and get a junior specialist job at UCSF 👍

(I'm assuming this is cg2812's title 🙂 )

That would be much much appreciated!!

Yeah, no problem. When I was looking for a job after undergrad, I actually got a handful of interviews from the postings, so I think it's definitely worth a shot.

+1

He should start early since HR tends to be slow. Good luck!

A bunch of medical students are studying limb material in the cadaver lab and they couldn't figure out the brachial plexus. They kept saying "I'm not sure, do you know?" to each other. It felt good to walk over, name every nerve and muscle in the region when I was tired of listening to it. I did it in a helpful and not arrogant way. Does this mean that maybe I can survive first year of medical school material? Maybe I was just lucky.

Why do I have these feelings?

Nonsense. Just play Halo with me. 👍

How early for a July or August start do you think?

I am not sure how fast UCSF works but when I moved to Boston I began applying in July-August, received interviews starting September and the actual paperwork was not completed until November. Even after I had accepted a position (~mid September) I kept on receiving interview invites... Some places took ~1.5months. HR had a few issues but the earliest for that position to be all set would have been October, I think.

Thank god baseball is back! I'm telling you, kids nowadays just don't appreciate America's past-time...
