Hey guys. Quick question for all of you: what exactly should we be doing between now and med school? I've done my fafsa and that's about it. I saw some of you discussing needaccess but none of my schools use that. I'm still waiting to hear back from my top choice regarding wait list rankings so I don't know If I should start looking for an apt near the other schools yet?
What else is there that should be done? I feel like I'm relaxing a little TOO much and don't want to forget anything.

That's cool!

Sounds like you have nothing to do until you hear back from your top choice.

I am waiting to hear what city I will be in for the first year. Then I get to find an apartment/decide when to move. THEN!!! I get to decide where I vacation/hike after I move.

Is it rare for students to end up in Seattle as MS1s, how does it work?

Health screen, making sure immunizations are up to date and getting the records together, don't forget to send official transcripts, and cpr/bls if your school requires you to be cert..

Prob other stuff but those pop into my head

If you are from a non-WA WWAMI state, it is impossible to go to Seattle first year. If you are not from a WWAMI state, you go to Seattle no matter what.

For WA residents, 20 go to Pullman and 20 go to Spokane, both are technically on the WSU campus. The other WA people go to Seattle. The benefits of not being in Seattle are way smaller class sizes (20 or 40 people versus 100+ in Seattle), more clinical experience (since no competition with 2nd, 3rd, 4th year students and even residents) and much cheaper rent about $300ish per month versus like $700+. You also start a month sooner and end a month sooner.

On the secondary you rank your preference (if a WA resident).

:wow:

Last year my rent was $250 a month. It was an apartment, but the city is small and has an amazing bus system. Plus, if we want to buy something you just go 8 miles over to Idaho and buy it with less sales tax. :meanie:

My studio apartment was 4 times what you paid last year (which is definitely on the cheaper side)... lol

Should I mention that I currently live in a freakin mansion just off of campus and I pay $350? I think the house is like 1500 square feet and has 3 bedrooms and a yard. Granite counters, gas stove, real hardwood throughout the house, washer/drier, etc.

Definitely going to hate living in a city where I pay more and get way less.

Haha, yeah, I can imagine it's tough to downsize. Luckily I don't share this problem. It's hard to downsize from a studio 😀

BUT I STUDIED!

Like, the level of detail the professor wanted was not communicated clearly at all. It was ridic. Even the grad students in my class were giving the professor death stares on the way out.

Yeah, that's the worst. I think the only thing that made any class "hard" for me in undergrad was being unsure of what I was expected to know for exams.

Definitely looking forward to a pass/fail curriculum :naughty:

Hm thats nice to hear 🙂. What are you thinking about doing for vacation?

All of this is a great reminder. Thanks!

Other than Vegas in June? Hiking and camping. What else would someone from the PNW do?

Safe to say you ranked Spokane #1?

Well, I had only been in Pullman for 4 years when I applied. I ranked it as #1, Seattle #2 and Spokane #3. At the moment, I am going on five years in Pullman and I am wanting to go back to the west side so I emailed to switch...

They told me changing preferences isn't allowed but they would take my change of heart into consideration. Will it make a difference? I will see in a few days. I just don't know if I can live without the rain and family for another year, let alone go on six years in Pullman. Plus, job opportunities for my fiancée are limited except for Seattle.

Ah, gotcha. When does placement info come out?

http://www.medicalschoolsuccess.com/how-to-pay-off-medical-school-loans/

Article about paying off hefty medical school loans.

DURING RESIDENCY THEY SUGGEST PUTTING 50% OF YOUR PAYCHECK TOWARDS LOANS JUST TO COUNTERACT THE ACCUMULATING INTEREST. DEAR GOD WHERE IS MY FINANCIAL AID?!?!

Is that even possible? Live below poverty for multiple years and work a hundred hours a week?

I am just thankful to be getting married and only taking money out for tuition each year. But that is still going to be over $100,000 by the time I graduate! But being married also means double the income once I am in residency. I feel bad for people going 250k in debt and being single.

Looking at 300-320k. 🙁. Hope it's worth it lol.

Meh.. I'm indifferent.. If I start at anything above 250k... that's 160k+ after taxes and loans...

I have no problems living on sub 50k a year.. so pour the rest of that on to that festering debt load..

(Note: If you care about marriage, kids, or keeping up with the jones.... none of this works)

With my current $125k, I'm looking at $375k or so... But that's what I intend to do, too: put everything but $50-60k toward my loans. Hell, I'll still be living better than I am now or when I'll be in residency at that.

Meh, I don't think marriage would affect your ability to do that unless s/he was what we Germans call a "hausfrau" (stay at home mom/dad).

And Agent B? I totally subscribed to that Mario parody guy. My friends on fb love you for introducing me to that guy. All of those videos are freaking hilarious! "I'm going straight ... through your neck!" Bahahaahha

Cue sexism cries I don't know man.. chicks tend to not be able to step away and just live, simply.

But yea.. not interested in the marriage... we'll see what the late 30s or 40s look like.
