Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Random anecdote: A couple summers ago, I was stuck out on Bleecker street in a very torrential downpour. That was one wet subway ride. Does Dr. Strange live on Bleecker St?

I'll just go with this one. I have literally nothing interesting to say about myself. haha 😳

Hahaha, if only I knew I was at the nexus of all realities while I was there!!

Have you read the manga Monster by Naoki Urasawa by any chance? I feel like that one got a little bit of a cult following in the States among American comic book fans, and it was very good...A badass thriller about a neurosurgeon. haha

My friends are making me go cliff jumping on Wednesday. Please save me.

That sounds like a lot of fun. It sounds scary, but you'll feel totally alive and awesome from the adrenaline rush haha. Live it up! 👍 😀 And be safe.

It's one of my favorite ones. IMO it gets a bit weaker near the end but it's still incredibly suspenseful all the same.

That book you guys recommended--Into the Realm of Hungry Ghosts--is really good! There are some interesting theories about addiction in there.

Is this orientation or actual class?

I wonder if my school will do the exam. I hope not.

They mix both together hahaha so half the day is orientation and the other half is class. So it makes for pretty long days....

Age isn't too terrible a thing until you start getting gray hairs. Then it becomes terrible.

Thinking about consulting with my current company for the next several months during med school.

Crazy?

Maybe 5-10 hrs / week at $100/hr. hard to turn down but even if I only work a few hours there is a minimum stress level associated with still being involved in the project.

Any thoughts?

I've thought about offering to do this remotely, but in the end I just think it would keep me from focusing the way that I want to. I think if I were consulting as an analyst where they could just give me a couple of tasks, and I could do them in my free hours, I might be more open to it, though (I'm a consultant serving as a director on a project, though, so all of my "tasks" would be to facilitate or drive something, which is much more open-ended).

Ultimately, if you can get them to just give you cut-and-dry tasks (basically just off-loading some things your way), I think it could definitely work, and be a great income source. I would just become leary that it is a slippery slope, and that they may end up expecting more.

This early on, IMO it's not a good idea. You don't know how much work you'll need to put in outside of classes, what groups you're gonna get involved in and so forth. Would it be possible to pick it up again perhaps after the first semester?

Man, trying to find a research position has been agony. Most people never get back to my emails, and those that do have nothing available. I feel like an undergrad again; I'd hoped it would be easier to find something as a med student.

And if I see any more gray hairs, I'm going to start using henna dye. It wouldn't be any stranger than that premed who wants lavender hair.

Lolwut. You've started looking for research already???? Man, I feel lazy.

I feel like half of the people (MS0s) in the Allo forum already have positions. I know most people wait until the summer after year 1, but I want to do as much as possible to better my chances for the HHMI summer program.

I'm also wishing I'd applied MD/PhD-- I thought I had absolutely no chance, but I might have been wrong. Looking into transferring from MD to MD/ PhD, but I doubt I'll be able to do it.

Problem is, you aren't a med student 🙂... unless your school already started? 😱

Thanks for the thoughts. This would primarily involve me sending direction on various tests, reviewing results of those tests and then sending direction on next steps, etc. Much closer to the description you reference that might be better to avoid, I think.

Need to think about it a little more. It would be nice to have the income while my wife finds a job but there is no doubt that it would divert my attention to some degree.

I actually think it would be possible to pick up later if I thought that would help. We discussed it today and they mentioned that specifically. I may just work to finish a few things up for the first few weeks and then take a break to assess the workload.

Thanks for the advice. Good luck once school starts.

Anyone starting to get nervous? 😳

You'll be fine! Tomorrow is day 3 for me and I'm already developing a pretty good study schedule. Most everyone will be pretty cool too. Remember, they are in the same position is you are!

What is your initial plan / method for studying? It has been a while since I've been in school exclusively and I imagine I 'm going to try a variety of methods to see which one seems effective.

Top!

As for studying.. I'm not sure. My school does the organ block curriculum so I imagine hitting it from different kinds of angles will help. That is, lectures, taking notes, and flash cards as well as possibly throwing in some practice questions from wherever I can find. Above all though is simply keeping up..

In other news - meet Camille Leblanc-Bazinet:

As much as I hate crossfit, she can sit on my face anyday.
