This sounds familiar!
When I traveled in Yunnan, China we traveled through the mountains first in a bus and then in van for almost 16 hours! During the first hour of our mountain accent in the bus we hit traffic due to a car going off the side of the mountain...That was not a good way to set up the remaining trip. Then the road became narrower and narrower(and there were no railings) to the point where when we went around a corner in the van we honked. We asked the driver what happens if he hears someone else honk at the same time. His response: "You brace for impact." On our last trip back into the mountain village(we made a 2 hour trip between 2 villages 3-4 times) we ended up hitting a guy on his motorcycle coming around one of the curves - needless to say everyone was fine. On that same last trip through, fog covered the mountains and despite the fact we couldn't see 5 feet in front of us our driver miraculously was able to keep driving. I remember looking out window and seeing our tire about |-------| that far from the ledge. This was probably one of the most terrifying hours of my life!
Turned out to be totally worth it though because I spent Christmas day in
Yuanyang where I watched the sun rise over miles of rice paddys. Was pretty awesome...ahh now I want to go back
