Class Of 2018!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello! Goodluck to everyone applying this cycle🙂 I haven't mastered enough courage to start my AMCAS. Everyone is bugging me about my graduation that is on Sat. I should just wear a sign that says "Yes I am excited about my graduation, now take a seat"..lol

That would be an amazing sign and I would pay to see people's reaction when they saw it 😀 Good luck to you as well

Sleepy. Trying to get back to a normal sleep schedule. I didn't sleep last night. Just a few more hours and I can sleep! 😀

Congrats on almost being done with finals! 👍

Wrecked that final...feeling lucky :luck:. Ya gotta get your beauty rest hahaha

I think I'm gonna get 3 A's and 2 B's my final semester. Kinda bummed 🙁

Get grades tomorrow

😱 I hate when grades first come out its always a moment of great despair and :scared: as you open the website

Dude! This thread has been crazy active.

I haven't read anything yet, but I'd just like to say that I'm excited to start my scribe job soon. I'll have an excuse to talk to other people.

I think I'm going to go work on my work/activities description now. 😀

i hate dentists

drugs didn't work and now im in super duper crazy pain

My postbac won't let us send our AMCAS until our spring quarter grades come in. Which makes sense, except that since a quarter based system, we don't get our grades until late June -_______-

Um.......... :uhno: can you tell them you don't want to delay your application for a few grades? Dude! Seriously? A month can make a difference.

Honestly, I just wrote about myself in the most honest way possible. I can't be anyone other than myself so why get others to critique how I'm perceived?

Format was simple:

1. life event that made me like medicine
2. background on me
3. life event that will make me a great doctor
4. why medicine and not other careers

Here's my #4

Funny. I'm interested in similar stuff! I think when I first considered medicine, my top three were psychiatry, neurology and neurosurgery. My freshman year I crossed neurosurgeon off of my list after meeting one....who I think was separated? Haha. I don't know. Not the lifestyle for me. It's good to know your limitations, I guess.

I have heard that medical schools don't like when you pre-determine what is good for you specialty wise. I know you do mention that you are open to many possibilities, but saying Psychiatry and Neurology would be best for you could create some hard questions for you during interviews. It would appear as though you are limiting yourself do that area just because you majored in Psychology. Of course this is no problem if you don't stutter like some of us...lol. Otherwise looks good and I would keep it if I was comfortable with it.

I've heard the same thing. I guess it might be important to note which schools are more interested in producing primary care physicians. Do you think they would turn away people who want other things?

I'm 38 million gazillion fafillion babillion % sure that I'll do psychiatry or behavioral neurology and it is because I majored in psychology; neuroscience and clinical therapy interest me, surgery and internal medicine does not. I'm pretty quick with my words so if it comes up in interviews I'll defend my position.

Like I said, it's a personal statement. It wouldn't be personal at all if I didn't proclaim my desire to be a psychiatrist.

You sound pretty confident in your decision, and I think that's great. And because you are, you're not allowed to say 14 rejections anymore. 🙂

I don't know, I'm pretty objective even with my own work. For instance, I can tell you automatically that the paragraph I posted has a few long winded sentences that need to be reworded and it also makes me come off as somewhat selfish (trying to maximize my own personal abilities). BUT, I also feel that it is a necessity to talk about why I want a MD especially since I'm not a bio pre-med major (like the majority are), and in doing so, telling the absolute truth of wanting to maximize my potential is vital.

That was just to show my method of writing, not looking for critiques. I'm the type of person that doesn't listen to critiques at all; I'll critique whatever someone writes in their critique of me. Character flaw? maybe. Confidence in myself? certainly.

What's your Myers-briggs personality? 🙂

I may change one day but not anytime soon lol

in other news, had to delete 3 schools (including my #2 school 🙁) from my list because I haven't taken a biochemistry course. boooooo

That stinks. I mean biochem was interesting, but it's a shame it can keep you out of a school. :-/

the beginning, I liked my beginning, but they didn't think it talked about me too much (even though it was sort of a reflection but I guess that they didn't like it too much ) They're med students and my postbac director so I'm gonna take their word for it.

🙁 Dude, I'm sorry. I know how that is. It's great that you have med students you can talk with, tho.

I've got bad knees and a bum back, I couldn't be a surgeon lol

Haha, for such a young one, you sure sound like an old man. :meanie:

Oh~ Fellow psych major!

I've gained an interest in psychiatry after taking AbPsych. Also, neurology since I'm a neurobio major as well. And neurosurgery since I love the OR from my shadowing experience.

The choices ...........

Anyways ... went off topic. Other news, my PI and I totally forgot my school's research symposium was next week so we're scrambling to analyze data so we can finish my poster. hahaha

Cool. Another neuro fan. 👍

In completely non application related news. My favorite show, Community has been renewed!!! Be still my beating heart.

I used to love community. I felt like the 4th season was a little flat in comparison to seasons 1-3. I hope they can keep the momentum in season 5.

Um.......... :uhno: can you tell them you don't want to delay your application for a few grades? Dude! Seriously? A month can make a difference.

Well I'm guaranteed an interview there if I do really well so at least I'll have one school. There's no getting past them though since we have to give them every step of our app as we go.

My pre-health committee doesn't transmit my file until July 17th. Is this too late? I should be getting my MCATs scores around this time as well.

I love kids so pediatrics is the way to go for me (I don't think I want to do general pediatrics though). I am however open to falling in love with any specialty. My family has however placed bets already on it having to do with kids...lol. I might surprise them and do sexology...lol

For sure! And congrats on dominating! 👍

@ jeff's office

They gave me vicodin, just took 2. Hopefully it kicks in soon. How awesome would it be if we got into same med school, went into same residency then opened a practice together?

@ soldier

My best friend in the world got accepted into dental school starting later this year; I'm seriously considering cutting all ties with her now.

Whoa, that's nice! Well, give it your all! I'm rooting for you. 🙂

Hope everything goes well. Dentist's aren't my favorite people either.

That sounds like perfect timing, to me.👍

That would be pretty cool. People would ask, "how did you guys meet?" The Internet just seems like such an interesting story to tell. 🙄 "You see, Jeff was freaking out about applications, so she got online...."

anyone here taken the MCAT yet? Ive got a week to go, ive been working on my PS just a little bit but havent done anything with the app yet. I have however gotten all my LOR forms out and have promises from teachers and others that they will have the LOR's in by the end of may. I have to then get a committee letter but I am going to fil out the AMCAS right after my MCAT and send my transcript over and hopefully have everything into them by the middle of june (except the LORS). Does this seem like a good timeline? I have to kind of be early because im fighting a lowish GPA of 3.45 or so. Also if anyone here wants me to look at their PS i can do that and give some feedback, i was an editor at my college paper for 3 years so I have a bit of an eye for essays and stuff. 🙂 I

I think were all gunna rock this damn cycle

Vicoprofen is better. It reduces swelling but some docs worry about bleeding.

^^ I have no idea how House was able to take so many of these. They make my stomach hurt and my body itch like crazy

Really? Cause when I took vicodin after getting my teeth pulled I felt like I was on a cloud. I definitely was out of it

Nope, I'm just itching all over. No bumps or welts anywhere

@ Silent, you may have had a stronger dose. 7.5 is pretty low

Awesome. I was worried about receiving secondaries from schools if my file wasn't complete.

I spent a little time scouring the SDN forums about schools that pre-screen. Besides the UC schools, not many others do.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=542698

As for an application being complete in order to get secondaries, I thought that the only thing they would wait for would be MCAT scores, not LORs. LORs are only required for a review, right?

Oh that sounds right🙂 This process will be the death of me...lol

And thanks for the link.

I just discovered "print application" 😳 which is super useful for seeing everything you've entered!!

Why hello, fellow Cretaceous large reptile! 😀 Middle of June sounds like a good time point. We're recommended to have taken the MCATs by the end of May, so it seems like you're in good shape! Good luck with last minute preparations!!

Oh pooh, our committee told us they'd have their letter packet submitted "by August" 👎 I was hoping to receive secondaries before then..

Your letters are needed for your application to be complete which means after you've completed your secondary. They are not needed to receive a secondary, just your verified primary.

👍👍 Perfect! Thanks Silent!

ah i was confused about that too. Thanks for clearing it up.

Also @jeghaber *short arm t-rex high five*

I love how the 2017 thread is talking about alcohol and the 2018 thread is talking about pain pills. Future healthcare providers of America!!!!:clap::clap:

You know, my committee has yet to answer me on the time frame. 👎 I'm 5th in line, so I can only hope that it will still be early. :xf:

....but who am I kidding? I have to retake the MCAT semi-late. 😛

I agree with that. Some neurosurgeons can be little .... off. But the one I shadowed was awesome! So down to earth and such a genuine guy. Tumor resection was probably the coolest thing ever.

And yes! Hooray for neuro~~~ 👍 I love the brain. 😍

I about 80% sure I might pursue a pediatric fellowship in whatever I do. I enjoy working with kids and even the ones in the hospital are always so cheery!

Really? Cause when I took vicodin after getting my teeth pulled I felt like I was on a cloud. I definitely was out of it

Man ... Vicodin does nothing for me ... I got it prescribed for headaches due to shingles (when I never got in Korea for my wisdom teeth - America, you confuse me sometimes). I would pop like ... 4 a day with no effect ... I think I was slightly addicted for a few weeks. 😱

So my SGPA may be much lower than I imagined (depending on how they classify certain courses I took)

3.28 without those certain courses counted in 🙁😡🙁

no way I'm getting in, honestly

You never know, I was able to get some of my psych classes count as bio classes which helped. It helped that they were crossed enrolled with bio classes. Maybe that's the same with your school?

Yes thank God

Hopefully. I took stats through the psych department and biological psychology through psych department (it honestly was a pure biology class). With those counted in, I should jump to a 3.37.

3.37 looks much better than 3.28 so I hope that'll do.

We're told to count our stats course in the psych department as math, so I'm guessing that will be counted as BCPM 🙂 I'm putting down my more biology-y cog. neuro. classes as biology too, so here's to hoping for the best!

I always found psych to be kind of hard. No idea how psych majors do it...

Fellow Class of 2018 hopeful here!

How is everyone entering AP credit into AMCAS? The directions say to enter AP courses "under the term in which the college credit was initially granted." Does this mean Fall semester of freshman year?

As an example, my official transcript lists AP Calculus BC credit as:

May 2010 Advanced Placement Grd/5

MATH XXXX Calculus I 3.00 P
MATH XXXX Calculus II 3.00 P

Would I enter the academic year as FR and list the academic term as 2009-2010?

It's all personal preference. I loved genetics but couldn't imagine taking classes like cell and micro, I'd die.

😱 if that's true, I might be able to bump up my science gpa up a bit!!!! Thanks for pointing this out.

In other news, I had a dream about my 6 in verbal, and a bunch of people told me I'd never improve or get into med school. Worst dream ever. 🙁

I'm not sure if this is the "right" way to do it, but I put it under summer term of my freshman year just to make the distinction between APs and fall semester clear. But then again, I also got 0 actual credit for my courses (just placement), so I didn't really put much thought into it, hahha

Micro classes were boring. 😴 Molec is where it's at!😍
