You guys seriously. Stop killing yourself. this is your FIRST YEAR. You're not suppose to be overwhelmed, if you are you're doing it miserably wrong! You're going to burn out..TRUST ME. I've seen so many smart students thinking they can do it all and they end up crashing and killing--i mean MURDERING ---their GPA...all for what? Them being cocky. It goes the same way with having an 'easy' schedule...you become cocky and stop trying hard. Don't do this you guys! I've literally ended up spending thousands of dollars in the hospital, and now i get to be stuck with a chronic illness for LIFE because I couldn't/wouldn't accept that I'm not a super-women human being and that I could do everything. I'm not saying you could end up in the hospital, but learn this VERY quick. There is so much a person can do, and just because someone else can..well f*ck that. We're not all the same people. Some can handle more and some can handle less. Just do the best you can do and please for god's sakes I don't want to see any of you brilliant people burnt out. It's not worth screwing up these four years.

+1

I like that mentality! I always say that nobody tells me what I can do but myself

I'm pretty sure the upperclassmen are laughing at this thread right now.

But the pleasant irony here is that they were probably the same way.

They were!

damn.. missed a lot. how are everyones classes going so far?

6 days and no replies? We're slacking!

A in Psychology (94), B+ in Chemistry (89...ugh). I get Bio back Thursday. Not bad for having them all on the same day if I say so myself.

nice! 👍 and yes, we are slacking! however, i've been slacking for about a month now. haha but i'm back in action.

A in spanish, but I got a low B on my chem exam...;_;
Also not doing very well at all in Calc. Probably because it's a night class and I am having a lot of trouble staying awake. 🙁
Yeah, not going too wonderfully for me...and I can't really drink coffee/tea/red bull to stay awake, because I've found caffeine really doesn't have much of an effect on me.

Dislike. I enjoy my night classes more cause they give me the opportunity to nap during the afternoon

lol nap wut?

Seriously, tomorrow I'm going to be busy from 7 in the morning to maybe 8 at night. Thursdays are my worst days, but pretty much every day for me is a giant block of busy buffered by exhaustion and my roommate watching Jersey Shore. (...)

I study/sleep on the weekends haha

A (100%) on my math test! (Though it IS Math 101...lol) 😀

I bombed the crap out of my Chem exam...Well, at least it lets me know what to expect. I'm going to start doing those practice problems.

80% on my first psych test 🙁, didn't study and I joined the class 2 days before the test started.

Man looking at these bad psych stories makes me glad my ultimate blow-off class was psych. Seriously, we had two really easy-graded papers the whole semester and the rest of the time we watched pretty fun videos in class.

Although I didn't learn anything, so that might be bad....

Lord, if I joined a class 2 days before a test and got an 80 I would be proud. Honestly, for my chem test, I'm pleased that I scored in the 50th percentile even though I didn't take AP chem like about 90% of the class already has.

😡 so jelly right now.

I know i shouldn't be ashamed but i feel like i could have done much better.

How do you guys spend your weekends? I always feel like I'm going too far by studying more than 2 hours a day on the weekend. I try to go out Fridays because you only have one undergraduate experience and it helps me de-stresses from the week. I figured busting it M-F and then letting loose a little wasn't a bad thing. I'm also contemplating joining a fraternity, but I'm not sure. What do you guys do to have fun/de-stress? We always focus on the academic/EC side of things.

Trust me, you aren't. On the weekends, my campus is more dead than anything else that's ever died. Seriously. And I have no way out. Rant aside, I usually disappear from 12-4 pm in the library on both Saturday and Sunday. It takes an immense amount of time and, if you've read questions from the USMLE STEP 1, borders on obsessive compulsive disorder when combined with my study habits during the week (which requires meticulously rewriting lecture notes). 😵

I have my EC's set up for most of December and the summer.

Dude, I know I didn't take AP Chem and all these kids around me have. I understand the material but I have no idea what happened on test day. I'm not an test anxiety person or anything.

I made an 83 in Biology. I skipped over one section of my notes when studying (on accident) that was worth 12 points on the exam. Complete stupid move on my part. I hope I can bring it up to at least an A-. I was still in the 90th percentile, but that's not good enough.

yeah, don't feel bad. i've SUCKED in chem so far this semester. but honestly, i blame it all on myself. i've had so much garbage going on this past month, i've opened a book probably 3 times for all 3 classes i'm taking. so everything thus far has been my own fault. i'll be making up for it all going forward, that's for sure. and like you said, i at least know now what to expect, and my prof doesn't assign homework assignments, which i usually what i do most of my studying from, so i'm definitely taking everyone's advice here and doing those practice problems.

for the past two years i would study as much as possible during the week, and then hang at the bars with friends on the weekends. worked pretty well, held up a 4.0, but there were a few times where it got really really close, and i stopped doing that for a while and stayed in all week/weekend for weeks at a time to study day and night to keep the grades up. so i guess it really all depends. prime example: too much bar time this past month = sucking thus far. exactly why i'm holding off on the "going out" thing for a while now to make up for being a ***** the past month. haha just gotta balance it all out, and don't get carried away like i did.

Two hours on the weekend isn't way too much. I spend way too much time studying though, which isn't good- haven't done any cool undergrad things thus far.

PS - what schools are you guys interested in?

WVU (since I'm in a BS/MD program with the school).

Though I entered the program with the mindset of not having that safety net to begin with, so that I can get the best GPA I can get and the best MCAT score I can get. Simply put, I may choose to apply out if my stats are good enough, in which case SUNY Downstate or SUNY Stony Brook would be my top 2 choices. If my stats are...say...3.6 and barely a 28 or higher on the MCAT, I'll stick with WVU. 😀

nice! sounds like you have a pretty good plan going.

SUNY Downstate is one of my top choices as well. 👍 Albert Einstein being 1st.

🙂 I live in TX. Hah, not just that, but they're friendly with In-state applicants, very cheap tuition, location (obviously), etc.

i figured as much. just wanted to make sure there wasn't some "inside secret" that this pre-med would want to know about when it comes to schools in TX. haha

Hopefully everything works out for all of us lol, also can someone please tell me how I'm suppose to activate quick reply 😕 I can't find the "quick reply icon" anywhere lol

agreed. i think it's pretty sweet having a place to talk to tons of different people that are all in the EXACT same boat as yourself.

and i'd help you with the quick reply button thing... but i didn't know one existed..

what exactly do you mean by quick reply? other than replying quickly.. haha how are you replying now??

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh gotcha!!!! i didn't even notice that at the bottom... but i just did it. you have to first click on the little link farthest to the right on the last post in the thread (or any post). third after "Quote".

and my school's pretty small, so i'm gonna keep my anonymity. haha not only for that reason... but well.... others too. oOoOoOoooh mysterrrrriousss... hahaha

This far away I have no idea. I do however have some conditions:

1. Md/PhD program
2. Warm weather for more than three months
3. I get accepted there
👍

PS - i hope that didn't come off as rude. it's just so easy to search for people nowadays by the school they attend, their name, etc. you're better off showing yourself than revealing personal information, you know? hell, pretty soon the average internet user might even have the option to search by photos. but yeah, just wanted to make sure i didn't sound like a d-bag. 🙂

hell yeah, that's what i'm saying! haha whenever anyone asks me, my signature answer is, "wherever i get in." after a while i realized that sounded kind of stupid though. that's when i started doing research.

I hope there's some correlation between MCAT and SAT scores since I scored 2220 on the SAT, I think that's going to be the hardest part of the whole process

There was a thread about this not too long ago, and also a little "enter SAT/ACT get MCAT prediction". The general consensus was that there is little to no correlation between MCAT and ACT/SAT. Sorry bro

Close to nothing. The only correlation that you might possibly derive out of the two is, if you scored really well on the SAT, then it might indicate you're a good student, and that you'll at least score close to as well on the MCAT.

But a lot of poor HS students, some even dropouts, are able to score really well on the MCAT and get into Medical School, so.....

from what i hear the MCAT basically just covers all of your pre-req's. i'd probably just try and kick a** at your chem, org chem, calc, physics, bio... study hard, get the A's, and don't let the material slip your mind when you're done with it, know what i mean? but hey.. an early start could never hurt either!:corny:dude, i'm sorry. the smiley has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation, but i just found it, and it's awesome. hahaha (hey, i'm new alright?)

so i finally made up for my 80 on my first psych test with a 90 on my second. I still didn't study but w/e, my prerequisites are another story entirely...I got a 78% on my 1st bio exam 😳 and the class average was like 67%...so yeah that's really bad. I still feel like I don't know how to study properly.

EHHHH... it's important to know your information down-pat, but the MCAT isn't about how much you can memorize..it's just a big comprehension test.
