I officially hate college. 😡
Reasons being:
-I have no friends
-My teachers don't teach at all (they just expect me to know everything)
-Everyone is either an ass, stuck-up, or just plain weird.

I feel ya.
-Everyone I've met so far is majoring in journalism.
-My chem lab is completely incomprehensible. I mean, right now they are expecting us to be able to write a balanced equation for making aspirin from salicylic acid and to write acid-base reactions for organic structures. It took me an hour of rage just to figure out (I think?) the basic formulas for these things, much less balance them. I want to grab my lab TA by the ears and scream in his face I AM A F***ING FRESHMAN. F***ING. FRESHMAN.
-See #1.

You aren't alone my friend.

WOW, my labs are like SO basic at this point! We're doing a measurement lab in CHEM and we only have 2 formal lab write-ups! I feel behind lol.

But yeah agree with the fact that it's sort of hard to meet people. Everyone's trying to make friends, but I feel like that's just an excuse to be overly artificial.

Ehh First year....where's summer?

See, the sad thing is mine was actually true.

I wasn't kidding either. And don't fret about it! I taught myself how to read when I was 4. 😉

So far my experience has been the complete opposite. I've bonded with a bunch of people, who aren't necessarily science majors, but are pretty chill.

Is the salicyclic acid reaction that bad? I remember synthesizing asprin from SA in my high school chem class and it was a pretty straightforward reaction.

Acid-base for organics is kinda along the same lines as acid base for your "normal" stuff, except that you have freaky titration graphs since organics tend to be polyprotonic (I don't know if this a real word since I just made it up)

Just PM me if you need help.

I think teachers in science are trying to weed out the premeds, so they purposely make the class harder than it needs to be...kind of dick move if you ask me.

👎thumbdown I felt like this the first week, but now that I'm getting involved it's all good

Ahhh yes the freshmen blues. Don't worry about it; 99% of the people around you are feeling the exact same way. Away from family, new location, new campus, new way of learning, new people..it's completely understandable. The semester, the year, the entire college experience isn't over yet. You'll adapt and flourish like a bad-ass mother ****in' algae. 👍

Don't worry it usually gets better, and in a month's time you'll feel great about the new lifestyle.

Also, one thing I hate about being pre med is you kind of lose your sense of "individualism." I mean, college is the time when you learn what makes you different from everyone else and explore your own true nature, but when every single guy I meet is pre med and the same major as me and same stats, close extracurriculars, etc., I just feel like another sheep in the herd.

True 100%. People who say otherwise are lying. Only 2 people from my high school (other than myself) came here. We all met up during the first week and talked about how lonely we were and how we felt out of place. Some people had ~40 people from their high school go here, so they already had friends (only making us feel worse when we saw them all hanging out and laughing). I've never found it hard to make friends, so it was really a depressing first week or so. Now that I've picked a few activities to get involved with (vs doing 1000000 stupid clubs like some people I know), it's awesome. I promise (hopefully) it'll be better by the end of the first semester 🙂

I HATE meeting other premeds sometimes, especially if they're clueless/annoying about it. One of my new really close friends is, but he's not ostentatious about it like some freshman who go around going "IM GONNA BE A DOCTOR LULZ" after they spend the whole weekend binge drinking and show up unprepared for exams.

Met a person like that the first day. He's already missed 5 Bio lectures.

Too bad the class is graded on a scale. :meanie:

I'm glad none of mine are on a scale

Exactly. - it gives people like us a bad impression.

Oh god. I went to the first meeting of this Pre-Med society in a lecture hall meant to seat 300 students. Lets just say people had to sit on the floor this time around. The president asks for everyone that is a senior to raise their hands, and maybe 15 people raise their hands. Then he asks juniors, ~30 people raise their hands. Sophomores- 40 people raise their hands. Then he asks freshmen to raise their hands and it felt like the entire room had their hands up -_-

My Chem class(probably my hardest class this year), the prof sets the average to a B-. And exams make up most of your grade. 1st exam on the 20th.:scared:

Same! 1st exam tomorrow I feel prepared but still terrified!

I wish my college had curves. 90% or higher is an A. No +/- system either. >_>

I think I might have said this wrong. The grade you get is the grade you get, none of the "only 15% can make an A" thing. Is that what you're talking about? We have the A+/A/A- thing...and I hate it.

well all the people in my class are dumb **** so i don' thave to worry about that. no +/-s (for now) 🙁

hey how do you guys find clinical volunteering opportunities (besides the usual; hospital, clinics, etc.) like internships and all?
Not even 18 yet, so that's been holding me back from literally TONS of volunteering opportunities. Recently I found a center for Autistic Children whose volunteer coordinator is super nice and was able to bend the rules a little bit and let me volunteer. Other then that, I'm not really able to find too much (I still find research and non medical stuff though).

A lot of networking. Make friends with everyone and ask ask and ask! Ask your professors, asks that lady who works in the library, ask your friends, ask seniors, ask everyone really. Google will also be your best friend. Craigslist too.

Hope you guys are having a good week! I woke up at 3am to get in line for tickets cause Obama is coming to our school. Sooo many people camped out. Three exams on Friday :/

Haha. That's pretty awesome

94 on my first bio test :soexcited:

Congrats bro! 👍

Drowning in work. Bio and chem tests next week.

You can do it bro! Just push through it!

I absolutely hate my bio lab partner.

Did he find the cure for cancer while doing stuff in bio lab or something?

I resent that you assumed this fabulous feeling of pure hatred (and I love feeling it...the emperor always told me it would make me STRONGER) spawned from petty jealousy. I'm not the kind of person who would have that chip on their shoulder.

I hate every lab partner I have had up to date.

👍

I'm dropping a class. There's no chance in hell I can keep this up and make straight A's.

You don't understand what all the "don't overload first semester" advice is really about until you've experienced it. 😛

College is hard. I should probably stick to a single major and work on developing other things.

It's def a pain in the arse w/ 18 hours, partying, maintaining social life, ECs, maybe starting lacross team?

Yeah, I'm currently doing 18 hours (1 of them is exercise) and it's just way too bleepin' much. So I'm dropping to 15 (or 14, really).

It's just that when you've already been staying up past 1 or 2 consistently, and you haven't even had a test yet, and you're already micromanaging your time and don't have a social life--you're doing too much. Even though I'm doing well in everything so far, things just can't stay that way.

You've gotta do more than burn your life away on a stats class. 😛

I don't know which dimension I'm in, but nearly everything for me has been going the opposite way. Both of my bio and chem lab partners are beasts and we somehow all know a lot of people in common. And I've been really involved on campus so I've gotten tight with a bunch of people.

My classes are really easy and I probably should study for them.... I kinda feel like I should have taken more hours.

What were you dual majoring in before?

This. Only taking 14 credits and they're waaaay to easy. Only thing I'm worried about is Communication, because the professor seems a little bit out of it. Just today she professed she is gay and blurted it out loud. Also, her tests seem scary because I have no idea what is going to be on them (no book in class, lecture is filled with group work)....

dude, takin it easy is way better than the alternative, gpa-wise and life-wise

I feel this way sometimes too, but then other times not so much. For me, work in college comes in bundles. One week, for example, it seems like I have absolutely nothing to do/turn in, but the following week I have to stay up late to finish everything, all my ECs have meetings, my family plans to visit and wants to go to dinner, and then I start to feel really stressed.

🙁 first chem test is tomorrow...
I have gone through all the problems, and I think I would be able to answer most of them, but still...it takes me some time.
And my freaking lab report is due tomorrow. I had to basically google the answers...why did they give ochem questions for a freshman gen chem class??? Seriously.
And I have to go to a family function this evening. Three hours of life-sucking right there.
And then my f***ing calc test
And then my f***ing spanish skit that I will be the only one to work on...
I'm drowning over here! Thank god for chocolate chip cream soda ice cream floats

You guys seriously. Stop killing yourself. this is your FIRST YEAR. You're not suppose to be overwhelmed, if you are you're doing it miserably wrong! You're going to burn out..TRUST ME. I've seen so many smart students thinking they can do it all and they end up crashing and killing--i mean MURDERING ---their GPA...all for what? Them being cocky. It goes the same way with having an 'easy' schedule...you become cocky and stop trying hard. Don't do this you guys! I've literally ended up spending thousands of dollars in the hospital, and now i get to be stuck with a chronic illness for LIFE because I couldn't/wouldn't accept that I'm not a super-women human being and that I could do everything. I'm not saying you could end up in the hospital, but learn this VERY quick. There is so much a person can do, and just because someone else can..well f*ck that. We're not all the same people. Some can handle more and some can handle less. Just do the best you can do and please for god's sakes I don't want to see any of you brilliant people burnt out. It's not worth screwing up these four years.

I'm pretty sure the upperclassmen are laughing at this thread right now.

But the pleasant irony here is that they were probably the same way.
