I am starting dental school this fall and just have a quick question about rankings for current students.

How does your school rank their students? I know class rank is used by residency directors when selecting residents, but do all schools do this?

What is the ranking based on, and do you get ranked immediately after your first year? First semester? etc.

Our school sent us class ranks after the first year. I imagine they will continue to do this every year.

Some schools don't have ranks and students go through courses with a pass or fail and some use letter grades and some use percentages. If you go to a letter or percentage ranking school, your rank is based on how well you do in your classes, just like high school.

At Temple we got ranked after our first semester. But it's a terrible system. It's based on GPA and not percentages, and since here 70-79 = C, 80-89 = B, and 90+ = A, someone who barely gets B's with all 80's and someone with all 89's who just barely misses A's end up with the same ranking.

That system is definitely worse given that your school has such a wide range for a certain letter grade (A, B, C). I'm honestly surprised that hasn't changed. My school does it by GPA, but it's by (A, A-, B+, etc...) so there definitely is some separation that you can attain.
