clear a few cobwebs

Hi all,
I have a few cobwebs to clear. So when a person graduates from med school....doesnt he/she go straight to residency? Or is there an internship to do before entering residency? I would also like to know if a resident is expected to pay fees for his/her residency.

Yes, you either Match or Scramble into a residency. Nowdays, the "intern" year is just the first year of residency, though it can become more complicated with certain residencies that require a basic internship in medicine, surgery or a "transitional" year (like gas, derm, etc.).

As a resident, you're an employee, so you get paid.
